Hi Jessica! When are you going to release the homeschool show and tell schedule for the 2023-2024 school year? Can’t wait to see all the great topics you cover this year!
Our schedule is pretty consistent, but the non-core subjects change. I’m about to plan them out for 5th grade. I have a bunch of trash bags full of games to consign. I love purging.
Love your planning videos Jessica! I have two kiddos (4th and 2nd graders) and I definitely big picture plan for the two of them. I print out a calendar divide the year's work out evenly through the months. Nothing is written in pen though until we complete the work. Also July is ALWAYS a planned "buffer" month wherein we catch-up with days missed throughout the year. Happy 2023/2024 year to you! I'll be doing my planning in January. 😉
Nature study would be perfect to combine with Emily’s interest in birds. My husband and I love birding, and I often wish my observation and sketching skills were better when we are out trying to identify new birds and a camera just doesn’t cut it (although nature photography is a whole other skill set that can be learned and incorporated!). Studying bird sign and talking about adaptations, structure, and behavior all intertwine. We love Sibley’s Guides (both for identification and their “Bird Life and Behavior”. Keeping a life list can be exciting, especially where you live with all the migrating populations and overwintering birds. I am excited for what you come up with. Oh, and binocular skills are also important - we love Nikon and Vortex (Vortex more for being shock and water proof, which is important for kids with optics). Have you ever brought Emily along on your purging? I can’t deny I drool over your homeschool storage, but we live in a small home and just don’t have the room for the kind of collections you have built. I’m bringing my kids along every time we declutter and tapping into their likes and dislikes, I am getting a different perspective as well as teaching them a valuable skill. Sometimes they’ve outgrown things I’m still attached to; sometimes we find a favorite we’ve forgotten about and I can make a point to work it in more often.
I would love for you to do an expanded video on choosing that one skill to learn for the year. I do this as an adult for myself now. Last year I learned all about raising rabbits and did just that. The year before, I learned to grow plants from seeds indoors.
Yes, I too dislike the purging... I'm working on it now cause I want it done asap. I also have the same issues with subscritpion boxes that we just haven't gotten through so I will incorporate those into the school year. I don't really bigbplan, I usually go through the subjects and choose what to do. Example history we will be finishing up beautiful feet around the world 1, the unboxed history and mystery in history boxes we got that go alongish with the around the world 1. Science will be Mel's science and megaic school bus boxes we haven't gotten through, a science fair project (this is the big one one) and the human body unit/morning basket that my child chose to do. English will be expository writing and the rest will be incorporated in our other subjects. Math will be worksheets, daily math workbook form evan moore, some older books such as "family math", logic and math puzzle books and card or board games, games, games..
I went to look to see what I should print and I HAVE TO PRINT ALL OF THEM except 5th because of the spacing of my 3 kids. The youngest will need preschool-1, the middle will need 2-4, and the oldest 6-8. Lolllll wow what could go wrong with teaching such a wide spread of skills :-P
The grade skills lists you provide are awesome. Thank you!
Just wanted to say that you are looking awesome! Keep going!
Wow, 6th already!!! We’ve been following you since Covid. Holy time flies!!
Purging is the hardest part! Cant wait for your video on what you are doing next year!
As usual I always love listening to all the advises you give and share with all of us.
Really nice plan and products!

Thanks for the video. Do you have a list of items that help with critical thinking and logic? Did you make a video on that? Thanks
We are also focusing a lot on nature journaling! Would love to see more about how you are implementing that.

I truly believe in studying and taking action for a year on your goals! It’s crazy the knowledge and skills you acquire from learning hands on.
What is that book?! "The Book of Math"? I need to see inside it more! 😅

Can you share book club info?
how is battleship going to help plot points on a grid…? it uses a letter/number system instead of an (x,y) system.

I think it would be helpful if the grade skills checklists already had a star on them if the item was going to be repeated again the next year. 💜
Highly recommend John Muir Law videos and books. He teaches nature journaling in a way that makes sense and can be attained.
