Is honey ancestrally consistent?

  • Paul and Ken Berry disagree about the benefits of honey consumption. Paul explains his experience in finding honey when he spent time with the Hadza and why honey does not perform the same as processed sugar.

    The bible also is really old, and there's that verse, a land flowing with milk and honey. At that time, they viewed cream, and honey, which would be from pastured lands as the greatest human blessing.

    I will say this: Since Aug 1, 2022 my son Brandon and myself started the carnivore/ with fruit honey and dairy diet, along with adding the desiccated organs and I no longer need to have my gal bladder taken out, and my son, who “supposedly” has had APLS and has had SADDLE BAG blood clots and many P.E.s along with chronic DVT’s, about every other month, and was on Lovinox shots (for life mind you) for the rest of his life, due to not being able to take normal blood thinners because of his epilepsy, has had NOT ONE blood clot since starting this beef, butter, eggs, fruit and honey diet. Is it because we are O positive? I mean maybe, …I don’t know, because supposedly even THAT theory has been debunked. But who cares. If, I see my son being able to work out and walk and exercise with more muscle on him and feeling good (oh there’s also that he NO LONGER TAKES A BLOOD THINNER AT ALL) ….. this is what we most care about. That we are eating until we are full, and not feeling like crap anymore, is the amazing rewards we could ever feel, at least in MY mind. Thank you DR. S for continuing to teach on how we should be eating. Our lives have and are continuing to thrive because of what you have taught us. 🙏

    Its all about context. Anyone engaging in daily mid-to-high intensity exercise (i.e. like Paul) NEED carbs for performance. The scientific sports/nutrition literature is unanimous on the important effects carbs play in modulating performance/recovery. In this regard, honey is a proven natural carb source that helps improve exercise performance and improve body composition in numerous clinical trials. Having said that, the need for carbs dramatically decreases if someone is not physically active or those living a more sedentary lifestyle. For the latter, carbs may actually be detrimental rather than essential. But the premise is that everyone should be exercising for optimal health therefore carbs should be included in their diets (which seems to be Paul's argument IMO).

  • @Unsensitive

    I think honey, and carbs in general, are fine given healthy metabolic context.
    It's the things that tag along with the carbs that are potentially harmful in that context, such as the fats in the grains and seeds, or some proteins for sensitive individuals.

    Fructose is nature's metabolic change nutrient. Literally all animals use fructose to change their metabolism to survive changing environmental conditions. Humans use fructose consumption to gain body fat and induce insulin resistance, increase blood pressure, and help us survive a lack of food, which our ancestors had to face every winter. Bears eat 10,000 berries a day during the fall to gain body fat to prepare for hibernation. Birds eat fruit to prepare for migration by gaining fat. Penguins eat fruit to gain fat to raise their young. Camels eat fruit to gain fat as a source of metabolic water.
    This is what fructose does, it helps animals gain fat, and provide metabolic survival advantages. That's all metabolic syndrome is, it's an evolutionary survival mechanism, and it's mainly caused by fructose consumption.
    The take home from this is that if you never face a famine or starvation, there is no reason to eat fructose, in any form ever. It's nature's weight gaining and metabolism changing nutrient.
    We don't ever need to eat it, period.

In Canada where I live , we have fruit and and what not in the summer and fall. After that if we weren't getting imported produce we would have had cold storage for a while but meat and fat would be a dominant source of food . People need to get up off their flat butts and move! Change all the imported garbage ,to local only. This would change a lot more than just people's health it would benefit the planet as well. Regardless of whether or not the Carnivore KETO lifestyle works for any individual, there are of course a number of success stories to be shared - innovative ideas for how to stay faithful to one's Carnivore journey. For example, a friend of mine was just finishing the eggs, steak and bacon of his first breakfast the other day when his wife's cat brought him a dead mouse - as mice tend to do when they want to "reward" their keepers with a gift. He politely thanked the cat and assured the animal that he was quite full and that she "Clawdia" should go ahead and consume the rodent herself. It got my friend to thinking: "If cats have a natural tendency to act as our predators-by-proxy could they be trained to hunt small edible birds on our behalf - quail, grouse, mourning doves, etc.? Then, remembering that Clawdia had recently helped herself to both of his son's goldfish (named "Goldilocks" and "Wasabi" ) while the family was out at the local butcher, the "idea bulb" got even brighter. Perhaps cats could also be trained to "catch and deliver" on our behalf,s mall mackerel, herring, tlapia, etc. - great sources of protein.

    The body prioritizes liver glycogen replenishment so it becomes insulin resistant at the muscular level when the liver becomes empty of its glycogen stores. Glucose, such as from starches and sugar, is taken up by the whole body while Fructose is sent to the liver to be converted to.... Glucose. So it makes sense any carb source would make one more insulin sensitive. To me it seems sleep sun and exercise and a low toxin environment(mentally and physically) would have a greater effect on one's health than the choice of energy source, granted the energy course is of low toxicity and high nutrition, like all natural sources of energy (animal foods, fruit, tubers, honey). Sleep, sun and exercise also play a large role in insulin sensitivity. I don't think obesity and the inability to efficiently metabolize foods for energy would be a problem if one's lifestyle is in check. So eating whatever natural nutritious energy source is available at the time and place wouldn't matter if lifestyle factors are in check and the body is in a currently healthy condition. A healthy body knows what to do with natural food you give it. A sedentary sleep deprived toxic malnourished body wouldn't. Also you're only looking at the Hazda. What about the other indigenous civilizations? Were they all high carb, or were the others mostly eating fat and included more starch and less fruit and honey? Just depending on their location.

    Ancestral consistent is one of the silliest arguments. Its also ancestrally consistent that we run around in loincloths with no AC or Heat and commit tribal genocide. So should we return to that? 🤣 We have so many more stressors in the form of radiation, jobs, constant communication from our work, friends and family that we can't walk away from through the forms of social media and email. Different stressors requires different diet than our ancestors.

    • @TumbleSensei
      @TumbleSensei ปีที่แล้ว

      @Spencer Caron the biological reality is that glucose is a necessity for the body and going zero carb has profound negative effects over the long term, decreasing metabolism and thyroid, while upregulating cortisol and adrenaline production in an environment that is chronically stressful, much more so than our ancestors environment. They would have stress from a hunt of an injury, whereas we have stress that never stops.

      @@Lamz.. the difference between endogenous alcohol production and glucose production is that glucose MUST be maintained and produced at all times. If you took all glucose out of the body immediately you would instantly go into a coma or even die. The brain can only run maximum 40ish percent ketones at any given time and the blood must always have glucose as well!. So even if you are in the deepest state of ketosis you must continually have gluconeogenis fired up to make the glucose. No fruit or honey for me. My blood sugar will spike. If i want load on carbs. I rather have raw milk in the gallons. He may not see it. Although he is fit. He is aging unlike Ken berry.
