    The interesting mechanics of IIIA soft armor is the way the layered panels distribute the kinetic energy, sorta akin to gambeson in a conventional sense. Instead of being a rigid steel and/or ceramic plate preventing penetration altogether, it absorbs the energy and dissipates it across the surface area & subsequent layers. Pistol caliber rounds are essentially designed to be big & slow (relatively), thus they cause damage mechanically by _"crushing"_ against the intended target.
    Hence? Bows can pierce IIIA with relative ease because the mechanics of an arrow is to concentrate its kinetic energy into a _"slicing"_ kind of manner, letting it go through the panels without too much difficulty, but probably not enough to cause major damage to vital organs. Whereas level IV plates, just like historical plate armor, is practically outright impervious to an a arrow no matter the draw weight.
    Suffice it to say? Conventional bullet resistant armor is literally just Gambeson -> Plate essentially. It's kinda ironic we've returned to the same basic design principles our ancestors realized with armor, but just made it lighter & easier to mass produce on an industrial level!

    • @dashrendar5320
      @dashrendar5320  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I know right! It’s pretty interesting to see how it all comes back to basics but just with the newest tech

    • @newrecru1t
      @newrecru1t 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dashrendar5320
      I'd definitely recommend sharpening the spear and giving the IIIA panel (perhaps a new one?) another go. We know that finer points & edges are exponentially beneficial for getting through gambeson, perhaps we'd see some similar results against the panel in a similar vein as well? Perhaps even the axe/sword can have a go at it with sharpened edges, seeing how effective the panel is against those sorts of nasty cuts.
      With the Level IV plate I think you'd have some effect with a mace & warhammer! Could be interesting especially since ceramic plates are designed to shatter, would be a neat contrast to how previous steel helms held up in comparison, or maybe the ceramic is simply too resistant for the kinetic energies your muscles can put out?
      Either way, looking forward to the next vids!

I was betting on the arrow just barely penetrating if at all. Different subject, hey do you know or watch the awesome archer Lars Anderson ? With the war bow, is it possible to get Lars's rate of fire ? Might be a good challenge to take on. I, for one, would like to see it. Thanks and keep up the good work !

    Would be really interesting seeing some kind of testing of various historical weapons against the armor just based on the force it deals. I know you mentioned that you'd still feel it even if you didn't get stabbed by the arrows, but I know a lot of historical weapons like war hammers, maced and flails and such were used just as much or more for the blunt damage they could deal to the person inside the armor. Basically, the way I've heard it summed up is that "The armor survives, but the shaking and beating inside the armor makes it so the wearer doesn't."
    Anyway, honestly I'd be thrilled to see anything you come up with.
    Maybe try modern armor vs sling just for the heck of it.
    Cheers!

      NIJ ratings also take that into account. In order for a plate to pass, it must stop the rated projectiles while having an acceptable level of backface deformation. At minimum, the NIJ IV plate in the video must shrug off 2,656 ft⋅lbf of force (30-06 M2 AP). You can take that hit to the plate and not suffer any sort of serious injury. It takes a magnum bolt action rifle to hit a NIJ IV plate hard enough to seriously injure the guy behind it. The plate will still stop the bullet, but you've now reached a dangerous amount of backface deformation.

Axes were more common and most likely less expensive to acquire for the day, but they most likely kept their edges better too, so they would have been a practical and serviceable choice for most.

    Tossing a comment for the algorithm gods and wanted to say I appreciated the longer video. I'd love to see a sling vs. small caliber firearm against these armors. I know sourcing even low-quality armor is expensive and difficult, but I'll never get tired of these sorts of tests (and tests against analogues). I keep hoping to someday see tests against something these weapons would've face, a boar! (At least, a boar carcass with its tough hide and ribs, though I know YT can be a little funny with those sorts of things).

    • @dashrendar5320
      @dashrendar5320  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, it would be insane to see something more analogous to a person like a bore or a pig, but those things do tend to get flagged a little bit. Working on some fun ideas as far as armor tests for down the road, but hitting stuff with other stuff never gets old 😂

    The problem with headshots is that your target is probably wearing a helmet. In that case you can only shoot him when he is facing you. That means he can see you. Maybe you can squeeze an arrow through the back of his neck, i don't know if neck has some protection with modern armor

    Try a leaf shape arrow head made of Cromium-Cobalt-Molybdenum alloy. I have two, it is an extremely hard material, yet flexible enough to absorb heavy blows. And because it is so incredible hard, it can be sharpened much more than softer material like carbon steel or bronze. It's used in the dental area. Don't know the english term. Zahntechnik in german.
    These arrows were able to punch through my linothorax as if it was not there. I had bound it against a target, so there were 28 layers of glued linen. And it went through and into the target behind. I used a 45lbs bow.

    Very interesting “what if”. I thought it interesting that the bodkins defeated the IIIA somewhat, as with bullets the philosophy for defeating kevlar is fast and small. If you go far enough in the other direction, say, a projectile weighing 4-5x a .44 magnum round, that does the trick too.

    • @poisonouslead85
      @poisonouslead85 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Kevlar is weak to cutting (it's literally a fabric) and IIIA is just Kevlar. Straight NIJ 3 is when you start getting into polymers and ceramics and the cut resistance increases accordingly.
