- So I am counting this as my “back say” video. Which means I only have leg day left then I am all done with the fitness stuff. There really are tons of “back day” videos out there that can teach you more I am sure so this is more tailored toward a functional approach for heavy bows.

With Joe Gibbs being able to draw a 210 pound bow, I've just found myself wondering how his back could possibly be bigger and scarier than yours
I think the big thing is that he started when he was 15 he said. So it’s literally a lifetime of specific muscle adaptation and growth. Just another level really
He’s very unassuming in person. Not fat, not skinny, not super muscly.
The back of a machine.
Thank you my friend 💪🏹
I bought a 105# @ 32" English longbow as my first bow. I could only draw it back to about 24" at first. It took me about 3 months to be able to reach 32" draw. Now I can shoot it all day without fatigue. Drawing a heavy bow is 50% strength and 50% technique. I handed my bow to a buff guy at the range who was shooting a 60# compound bow. He was able to draw it back, but it was so uncontrolled that there is no way he could have shot it. I think the best exercise is simply to drawing the bow with an arrow nocked to force you to be in control. It's a very specific motion that needs to be trained and repeated. Your bow arm shoulder is going to be in a lot of pain at first. That's also why technique is important: to reduce the risk of injury.
For sure, it can’t be done really with the Olympic style pull at super high draw weights. I sure some people can but it’s really not optimal
First bow ever? Or first longbow/warbow.
If that's the first bow you've ever had that's damn impressive
@@stupidhandles first bow ever lol, I do a lot of pull ups already
My friends, you bow to no one
Haha gonna use that line soon I swear
Awesome video man! When you said your "lighter draw" is 135lbs... i laughed out loud! Strong man! Ya, Big muscle doesn't necessarily mean functional muscle! You described it perfectly! Can't wait for part 2!!
It’s true, it’s very specific muscle development. Guys like Joe Gibbs who start from 15 years of age have super unique muscle development as he can pull back a 210lb bow. I can only hope to get close to that
Absolutely spot on mate, big muscles are a small part of drawing back a bow. I'm not saying its not important to have strong muscles, but it also depends on how your muscles form, some guys don't look big, but are stronger than some who are. I think it's a genetics thing, idk. But yes form is more important than huge muscles imo. Obviously it helps to have strength, but for some strength doesn't equal big looking muscles.
it's also tendon and ligament strengthening that you're doing. By focusing on full range of motion and static isolated holds, you are getting stronger but not necessarily needing to get bigger! Like the Bruce Lee of Archery! LOL
@@BMO_Creative
Absolutely i forgot about those lol, good point. 👍🏻
I'd make the argument that a big body builder like physique would reduce the ability to draw with correct form, too big biceps and that, can bend your arms properly. Like how they can't put their arms down straight at their sides they can't fully bend the elbow either.
It's not everyday you see a living Fian Champion :')
Impressive muscles and great content!
Thank you and thank you
I can relate to the why aspect of training. I said in a recent IG post that my calisthenics is a solution in search of a problem. For me despite trying lots of things I haven’t found the problem that I am good enough socially connect which includes calisthenics itself. I must be the ultimate nerd.
The hunchback thing was probably rowers at the Mary Rose not the archers, no other find from battlefield supports the hunchback theory.
Awesome awesome and awesome 🔥🔥🔥🌟
Thank you as always my friend
Thanks for this! These “at home” tips will really help bc I have to drive way out to the closest range. I find my lower back gets into after an hour of practice. Also great advice on the elbow sleeve. Close to the end of the hour I can feel my elbow and shoulder “rising” to alleviate fatigue instead of staying “set” in the technique. 🏹
The archery club at school is the same, when we first entered we were not allowed to hold a bow. However, one of the physical training uses RUBBER TIRES. I got bored but finally I was able to use my bow!!!! 😂😂
Thanks! I am rather new to archery and feel I need to train my back for more strength. Great tips.
Always impressive, you're a real warrior 👍
You are kind to say so. Thank you
Love the historical and nerdom references throughout! The band exercises starting around 2:20 are also excellent for strengthening the rotator cuffs and increasing mobility.
Lats made for breaking armor. Based.
Ha let’s goo 😂💪
Thanks for the tips and advice. I've started using my bows again since discovering your channel.
I promise I’m looking respectfully. You’re doing the people a great service 🫡
Haha thank you most kindly
Awesome video. My whole reason for getting in shape was purely nerd related also lol. Not sure where you live but the countryside is beautiful
The best motivation possible!! 💪🏹 also thank you. Out in California but not beach California 😂
My arms just about healed from the break back in January. Your vids have been giving me motivation to keep on doing my physical therapy so I can finally get into archery in a couple months! Physical therapy is no joke 😅 but it works for sure.
Yeah it’s brutal; I had to do it with my ACL, keep pushing my friend and heal up soon 💪🏹
Awesome video 👍
Time to put some of these on my list for archery practice.
Awesome. I hope they help
Definitely adding some of these into my routine. As a rock climber, I use the cable machines to be able to work my back in specific pulling angles. It really helped when I started archery. Especially since I do thumb draw, I can help strengthen that grip by pulling with the same grip.
Thank you for adding to my training arsenal. Keep slaying, hoss 🏹🤘🏿🤙🏿
Awesome my friend! Keep crushing it as well 💪🏹
Hi Dash:
Thanks for the bow muscle strengthening tips--just what i need!! And, the "likes" are coming in! Appreciate your fun videos!
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope it helps 💪🏹 thank you
Love the nerdy dedication. Makes think about things in my life I could put more effort into. Thankfully this is penultimate fitness video then back to the neeeeerrd stuff! 🏹 (Changed my profile picture btw.)
Thank you my friend! Nerdy stuff here we go!! Been working on another lord of the rings video about the northern rangers
Love from India brother ❤️……I have a lot of love for ancient weapons and archery…keep up…
Thank you kindly my friend! Will do
Motivational. Thank you bro
Most welcome my friend
your so strong💪
Thank you my dude 💪🏹
You need to look up Chief A.J and his record of the 200 pound yew bow. It's amazing!
Oh I have for sure seen it. Getting up to 200 has always been my end goal
You mentioned "laying into the bow" now in a archery class you would be chastised for doing that, atleast my class did. They wanted staight back etc, but obviously they are teaching more of an Olympic style archery. I showed one of the coaches one of your videos, thinking he would atleast admire the dedication youve put into this, but no, he said "well thats just silly" and tbh youll find alot of archers have this "snobbery" attitude. And even when i showed a guy who does trick shots they put their noses up to that to. Kinda a shame because for 1 i admire your dedication, 2 its fun and shouldn't be taken so seriously. It kinda put me off these clubs because i plan on trying some trick shots, although i use a 45lb bow because im just doing target shooting, and even hunters use a 45lb bow, not all but most. I mentioned i tried pulling back a 120lb bow and even though for 53 im not a weak guy, spent a few years in many gyms so i know what muscles you would need to train to achieve what you do. Thankfully i dont see many negative comments in your videos, if at all. its fun to watch, as an archer myself its very impressive to see and how you make your videos educational but also fun.
Yeah there is a divide I think between many modern archers and old school traditional. Most important thing for sure is just finding what you are passionate. Because it brings value to your life regardless of how people see it
I can relate to that, I enjoy my bow like a child, and I see many of my fellow archers who seem to have lost this kind of passion. I also show these videos and often they treat Dash with disdain. I don't know, I find Dash so entertaining and motivating, why things can't just be that simple ?
Awesome video! Do you think that calisthenics pulling skills such as being able to hold a front lever (113 kg bw at 2 meters tall) and front lever rows have proper carry over to warbow specific strength? I can also do one arm cable rows @85 kg for 8 reps and pullups with 40 kg for 3-5 reps. I am training calisthenics for more than a decade so I wonder how much that could help me to get into warbow shooting again as I had to discontinue archery for a long time.
It’s very possible. But I really don’t know how things translate on an equal basis unless you actually get your hands on a bow. It’s hard to say how well it translates
thank you
in 3:15 I saw excersise new to me and I incorporating it ;)
ewery little helps
about that deformations in back
look a litle on corean and chinese techniques
they pull with both sides and technique is more refined than english one more simetrical and balanced
you dont need to practice whole technique just try to implement few points and it works nicely with longbow
I now shot mostly east and am not on your lewel most I can shot few arrows corectly is just 120pounds but my go to is slightly under 90 now
but working on it to go litle higher
❤
Chest expanders!
I love youe videos, great work! Can you do a video comparing an great axe vs the great mace. let say both are similar in weight and weight distribution.
I would love too. Need a Great axe first though 😂
@@dashrendar5320 thats true, mayb can try a.wood chopping axe first. 😂
Bro the hair...Asmongold would be furious
😂Hahaha why would he be furious? 😂Because of the rain?
Curious if you're ever surprised at the amount of damage these bows can do or are you pretty familiar with their damage capabilities by now?
I was training pulling a bow with an arrow at home as you do, but at full draw my fingers slipped. The arrow buried itself into the wooden panneling of my hallway. My wife was not too chuffed to say the least.
Sweet mercy hahah my wife would kill Me 😂😂
Very impressive my friend,I've shooting a heavy ish bow for 6 years doing archery for 10 years I'm 52. I'm currently shooting 120# @32. I'm aiming for 150. But my student has been shooting for 2 years and he is shooting 140# he is 28 years. Check us out.The Spartan and the Bowman.
Nice selfbows are pretty cool, how long did it take you to get to 130? I guess you started shooting much lighter too? Was there a long time to build from beginner to advanced?
Probably about 5 years to break 100 I would think
@@dashrendar5320 thanks, 5 years is not bad in a lifespan. I have a tiny frame and can pull 60, good luck getting to that 180 beast! Hope you’ll get there pretty soon, pretty rare to see those weights getting pulled 👍🏼
Do gou think one of those long bows would last with proper care in the hot and humidity climate of Brazil? I'm really want to have one.
I want to get better with heavier bows, I shoot a 70 pound bow right now I'd like to reach 100-120 and I'd be happy with that. My biggest problem is finger/tendon strain, how do you deal with that with such a heavy bow?
If I draw my bow and I don't keep my three fingers tense, then I notice my tendons hurt quite a bit.
Yeah, good point, going from 50 to 65, I noticed that even if I have the back strength, I need to condition my fingers, just like a climber, sort of.
I guess it comes down to working them out and strengthening them, like any other muscles.
Dudes back muscles looks like a rams head
I now shoot with a longbow that is 65# @29 for 62 lenght, and its funny because even if I like to shoot, I do it also as a challenge, because most people around have between 30 and 45.
Quick question : do you know how strength of the bow relates to the length ? Because obviously you wouldn't draw 130# with a 62 length, right ?
Anyway, great content as usual 💪😎
You can get war bows that are shorter, Mongolian horse bows for eg, and composite recurve bows (traditionally sinus bows) but match longbow war bow rates.
For wooden self bows you need the length, but they are composite bows that can deliver equal weights and speeds.
Part of the reason long bows are better known as war bows is the influence of the Anglosphere. In northern Europe the damp weather meant that composite sinus bows would come apart, so they were not suitable for the climate, in more temperate climates sinus bows where favoured, there's historical reference to Mongols drying their bows in hot sand to reduce damp undermining them, so even more temperate climates it was something to consider
What the exercise tool that's a stick and bands called? think it would help me no end
It’s called a “bow trainer” you can get it off of Amazon
@@dashrendar5320cheers, much appreciated
I noticed in an other video that you had a bit of asymmetry going on in your traps! with drawing back on the bow!also be 100% aware of your surroundings at all times, sneaky damn french knights have become a bit of a scourge!
Hahaha you never know when they could be lurking around
If a sneaky french knight, sneaks onto the range, thats their own doing!
Are you silly ? It's the sneaky damn English knights that you should be aware of 🇫🇷⚜️😅
@@AlainBoudard them too!
if you get up so early in the morning, what time do you go to bed?
I go to bed at the exact same time I put the kiddos down so it’s about 830 and then I pass out instantly
I thought archers were only for weak people on the battlefield, my mind changed
No shade, just want to help you tonsee your shadows. The vanity is oooooozing from this channel. You are wise, intelligent, and have something to share. You dont have to sculpt yoir body in this fashion to get positive attention.
Understood and noted my friend. In Ernest I do do a lot of videos in outfits armor etc. but the ones that seem to garner traction are unfortunately the ones that do feature the “shirtless” content. so I still do do it for that reason but thankfully now that I think I have a more large following, I can start doing the stuff that I really like which is more nerd in history type in the historical pieces
@@dashrendar5320 I see that, and thanks for taking it well. But I think it goes deeper than what you put out on TH-cam. Its been my healing experience that many (not all) people who really want to put on muscle wear those muscles almost like a suit of armor against their childhood traumas. They feel like the muscles give them power and protect them from the scary outside world thats looking to hurt them. True power comes from within, from understanding why we wish to protect ourselves in this fashion and healing those old wounds. Just putting it out there, you can take it or leave it as you wish.
Thank you, kindly for your insight. Thankfully, I have been blessed with a wonderful life and a wonderful childhood. Much of my physique stems from my childhood love of comics I had always wanted to try and replicate the heroic figures and as I got older, I just pushed myself to try and get that if possible. So in that way, it was ingrained in me from a young age but thankfully it was not due to anything traumatic that had occurred.
@@dashrendar5320 I'm glad to hear that, but I see trauma in a different way. It doesn't have to be a beating or anything like that. Lets say in your heart you want to play outside but instead you're forced into a classroom. Thats trauma that needs to be healed. Or you had something to say but were told to be quiet. Thats trauma that needs to be healed. I believe that our childhood completely shapes us as adults, and these things we see as commonplace have profound effects on who we turn out to be. Maybe a sibling excelled at something and that made us feel inferior. We take that into adulthood and oftentimes spend our adult lives dealing with that inferiority. Im not trying to pick on you or anything, and I really do appreciate your discourse. I just want to see everyone embark on a healing journey so we can all become more fully who we are supposed to be.
At what age did you start to work out? I’m 14 and I’m wondering if I could get a build like you :)

Bow back where it at
I know joe rogan is for sure watching this lol
Haha that would be pretty cool
Joe Rogan and his pussycat compound bow can only dream of being this good.
I'm not a fan of compound bows, can you tell!? I'm not a fan of any bow that has bits gizmos and gadgets, that reduce the need for skill, you only get to be a better archer by working on your skill, sights and balances aren't skill, they are skill reducers, I have to keep my opinions to myself at archery club, I'm the only trad/barebow archer at my club, yet out perform the majority of others, who have been shooting much longer, this isn't a boast, it's not that I'm great, its that I put the effort in to improve my skill, (I'm generally the first at the line to shoot, and the last to finish, another advantage of trad bows, you don't take half an hour to assemble and disassemble your bow! Out the bag, string it shoot) rather than using things that reduce the need for skill, it's common sense, if you use things that reduce the skill needed you won't improve as much. I'm amazed how accurate dash is with very heavy bows, shooting a war bow is one thing, Shooting accurately is on a totally different level, you can tell the level of commitment hard work he's put in to be that good an archer.
@@stupidhandles oh yes, so relatable ! How much do we have to wait for the silly little adjustments they keep making on their machines while we already shot our whole pack of arrows 😅
so nice and green with palm trees in the back. Is this in Florida?
No this is actually out in California
