Part one and two videos are very informative. I have followed ALL of Spencer's wallpaper removal techniques. My results were successful with little drywall damage. I wasn't expecting a successful outcome because I didn't properly prepare the walls before wallpapering. Patience and love is what's needed for this DIY project. Thank You so much for your advice. I just starting removing wallpaper of my bathroom wall and it had been painted over the wallpaper by the people who were the first owners of our house. Most of the top layer came off of the sheet rock in the whole bathroom. It has been a nightmare. I had told my husband they did not seal it before hand and that is why this looks this way. I really truly appreciate your advice. Thanks You so much.

Great video tutorial on how to remove wall paper! Well explained and very concise. A real master of the craft. You can see how relax and patient he is explaing and doing it. Thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Spencer, appreciate the video - I've used the techniques in this video to remove most vinyl and grasscloth wallpaper with no problem. However, I'm removing vinyl wallpaper in my foyer and like most good quality vinyl, the top layer comes off in beautiful full sheets. However, the tan paper backing still does not come easily with water no matter how much I wet it. This paper backing is different than what I've seen before/what you've shown - it doesn't tear when pulled, it just breaks off. It's also not drywall brown paper because after scraping the backing while wet, I can see/feel the drywall behind it. Any direction you could point me in to removing it would be great.
1. Apply oil based kilz on this paper. Do not waste time removing. 2. Let oil dry overnight 3. Apply 2-3 layers of THIN joint compound skim coat. Let dry between coats 4. Apply Gardz over skim after light sanding. 5. Let dry 3 hours. 6. RepInt. If I’ve helped you. Thank you for this video. If the wall paper comes off without revealing the brown layer, can we assume it is already sealed? Do we still have to seal it before painting?
Excellent question Alice. Even if it were sealed, there is a stubborn residue of paste over which you cannot put water-based paint. Therefore, please sealed it with either an oil based primer, alcohol-based primer or gardz

Well, I did watch everything, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t going to work for me. I live in a 90 year old house and upstairs is some wallpaper over shiplap. It’s been painted over and wallpapered probably dozens of times. I tried to get it off a few years ago, but didn’t get far. I was working full time and didn’t really have the time. I have removed wallpaper successfully before, but just wondering if you would have any advice for this other type of problem.
Success...so far, thx to all your advice I got through it without having a melt down. Got all the wallpaper off, wet sanded, wiped clean and today sealed the wall with Kilz oil based sealer. Pugh! Will prime tomorrow b4 skim coating (yikes). But have another question. should I spackle the small pin/nail holes b4 primer and skim coat? Also have a vertical crack an inch in from corner down near the floor. Weird place to have a separation. Do you have a video showing what to do with this issue?
Helpful and appreciate the content, Spencer! I wonder how many homeowners think you're nuts, and just talking to yourself while making these videos for us.
My wife always asks this question! You can use the steamer, but, you will be spending lots of time making the wall moist when you can simply do it with a spray bottle
Excellent Demonstration. I had my Wallpaper in my kitchen begin to fall off the wall. It was very easy to remove the entire Wallpaper. I only had one section of my wall which gave a tint of pink. I washed the walls with water lightly. Then left it to dry. I really did a fine job I was told. Now, this other owner puts Wallpaper on the ceiling of Bathroom😆? How to remove from ceiling without rips? I watched your entire video. I'm only 5'3" 😂! Remove from ceiling? Spray water and let dry. Don't over saturate your walls. For me, it can get soft. Excellent Eductional Lesson.

great information Spencer! I am a painter in australia and was wondering does the same system apply for re applying wall paper back on after preping it? im learning the wall paper at my current job but know one knows much about wall paper.
Been looking for someone who knows what they are doing!! I think i got it water , water and then more water!!! Got a kitchen and dining rm and full of wallpaper!! Thank you for your wisdom!!!
I totally respect what you say no doubt! But I have been a painter for over 30 years doing mainly high end work for 20 of the 30 years, In Australia the paints could be different, but in cases like this a good coat of sealer is sufficient for the areas where the paper face has came off, for the left over glue I personally use a sponge with a scourer on it with warm water, the other thing that I would always suggest is to let the walls naturally dry,The zinsser is a great product but not necessarily user friendly for the handyman and as you mentioned a lot more costly, so In short let the substrate dry after you have removed the glue with either a sponge/scourer apply a sealer coat allow to dry fill all required areas where needed with base coat, sand in between lightly and apply top coat, sand all top coat apply all filled areas with sealer, finish with two coats of low sheen 👌
Hi Spencer, thank you so much for your videos, I find them very helpful. I have a question... do you do the same process for wallpaper removal on lath and plaster wall? My home was built in 1899 and I'm about to remove some wallpaper that I believe might have been added in the 70's or 80's. I just want to make sure that for lath and plaster it is the same steps? Thanks!!!
Thanks for this video, it saved us a lot of time removing wallpaper in our bedroom. One question has come up...we have discovered that what is behind the wall paper is wood paneling that has a layer of paint on it. What should we do to prep this for painting?
I just dis a video which will help you! Prime it with alcohol primer: shellac. Then put roman pro 999 on it and hang your paper! Watch this video which will help you answer the question you have asked here th-cam.com/video/srZssFLTFlI/w-d-xo.html And do me a favor sir, since you like my videos Joshua please take one minute and give me a five star review and say something nice about my videos, would you? www.google.com/search?q=tampa%20wallpaper%20installer&tbm=#lkt=LocalPoiReviews&trex=m_t:lcl_akp,rc_f:nav,rc_ludocids:18168418332679895040,rc_q:Spencer%2520Colgan%2520-%2520Wallpaper%2520Installer,ru_q:Spencer%2520Colgan%2520-%2520Wallpaper%2520Installer,trex_id:XCBBr
Let me just change it because I thought you were hanging wallpaper; go ahead and put shellac which is an alcohol base primer on it. This will allow you to paint it now since all of the glue will be sealed by the shellac; but now you might have a rough surface, if you do, give it a thin skim coat, if you don’t have a rough surface, go ahead and paint it; but, if you had to skim coat, then go ahead and put Gardz Over your skim coat, wait till it dries and then put your favorite paint on it because you’re all set!
We have a large room in our home that we want to paint. It has vinyl wallpaper on it that is very well secured to the wall (for 35 years). We would like to not have to strip the vinyl wallpaper but do not want to paint over it due to it having a border on it (don't want to show the seams). Can we prime the vinyl wallpaper with a Roman Primer and then hang wallpaper liner on top of the primer and then paint?.
Sounds like a good plan. You may want to skim coat at the border line, so the line doesn’t Telegraph through. Prep with R-35, not RX-35. Then liner, size liner with cut adhesive and you will be good to go!
Spencer, because of your videos I was able to paint my daughters bedroom and she’s so happy with it. Gave me the confidence to take off the wallpaper in my bathroom and try painting it. How do I know if the Sheetrock below the paper is raw or has been previously sealed? It came off pretty nicely so should I assume it was previously sealed? Thank you for all you videos!
Karen! What an awesome compliment you just gave me… Please copy the compliment that my videos have helped you accomplish and please posted on the following Google link for the rest of my clientele to see. It means a lot to me www.google.com/search?q=tampa%20wallpaper%20installer&tbm= Please give me a nice five star review for that. You did a great job so far and the answer is you don’t know if they are sealed so I would like you to seal them with a clear sealant known as Roman RX 35 and let me know how it’s going if you have any questions just shoot me an email through this thread and I will get an email from it I think you in advance for your five star review! You made my day
we hired some painters and for an extra $100 they said they could remove the ugly wallpaper from our bathroom (the owner of the painting co. said this). He personally started it and got frustrated and literally walked out & went home! Leaving his 2 assistants to finish. They tried, but gouged a lot of the walls. I handed them a spray bottle with 1/2 ammonia & 1/2 alcohol + a dash if dawn dish soap. They told me later they were able to get all of it off thanks to that solution spray. They still gouged the wall though.
Hi Spencer, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and produce these helpful videos! Couple questions: if drying time isn't a concern can I use just the Weldbond to seal the drywall both before and after skim coating? Also Weldbond recommends a ratio of 1 part to 5 parts water. Do you think that's too diluted?
The house we bought has painted wallpaper. It’s this weird mesh wallpaper. I already stripped three layers in another room with these videos. So my question: what do I have to do with painted wallpaper?
I don’t know what mesh wallpaper is but somehow I suspect that you mean Grass Cloth. Here’s what you’re going to do: 1. Do not fear damaging your walls. Get out a sharp knife and slice it diagonally long slices and then take your knife and slice it in the opposite diagonal direction… Do this in an area of about 3‘ x 3‘. Then take a 6 inch taping knife and trying to get the edge of a taping knife underneath these strips that you have sliced and start prying them off of the wall.
@@spencercolgan Our cats have begun some of the removal in a corner. I looked up grasscloth and it appears you knew what I meant. I’ll need to seal them then skim coat after removal ?
@@spencercolgan Whatever if it needs it it needs it. That I can do. I’m just glad you’ve taken the time to make these videos and to respond it’s a great help and greatly appreciated
@@spencercolgan Spencer what if I do not want to skim coat the walls are in great shape other than some thick glue... just a sand then? I really appreciate the reply I have looked threw all your videos for the answer
I've removed hundreds of rolls and the very 1st thing I do is a small space in the corner BEFORE wetting the walls. IF it looks anything like this job, I heavily sand the entire wall with 80 grit sandpaper so the water can penetrate the vinyl coating which is mostly waterproof. Mix water with DIF remover, let it soak 2 or 3 times and BINGO. Much easier.
@@spencercolgan there’s dustless sanders now Spencer. There’s also a special tool to score just the drywall paper allowing the water to penetrate deeper into the paper. I have also removed many wall papers. I think this is for more of the DIY who you think is going to go all out and cause damage to their walls.
Also, a wallpaper scorer from Loews or Home Depot will enhance water penetration without damaging plaster or drywall. I have found a broad 3" drywall tool can be used to start an edge and save your fingernails without digging into the plaster.
Go to 42:20 as well. I asked people to please review the whole video before they make comments are aske questions so that they are fair to me and they don’t cause me unnecessary loss of time by having to answer something that I have already answered in the video
Put a humidifier into the room you seek to strip wallpaper from. As you spray water on the wallpaper, the water will be able to soak in more completely and down to the adhesive without leaching into the air. In short...make that room a tropical mess!
Don’t remove it. Go out and purchase 1 gallon of original KILZ. Let it soak put it on thick; then spread joint compound overhead with a 10 inch taping knife. Let that try, do it again. Then reapply original KILZ over your new smooth surface and enjoy yourself
This helped by letting me know I didn’t need to buy anything. A spray bottle of water and my fingers and I was successful! But the video could be sooo much more concise. I also could not watch much of it due to the constantly moving camera. 🤢
I respect that; i used to use that stuff long ago and I don’t like breathing it in when I spray it; if you think about it, if you do it over and over again, what does that do to your lungs?

Excellent information aussieguy. Thank you!!
Does it help to use warm/hot water in the spray bottle, vs. room temp?
Yes.
Thank you very much your video was very informative to the point!
Thanks!!!
Same exact procedure.
Great Vid Spencer, keep them coming
Thanks for this video, it saved us a lot of time removing wallpaper in our bedroom. One question has come up...we have discovered that what is behind the wall paper is wood paneling that has a layer of paint on it. What should we do to prep this for painting?
I just dis a video which will help you!
Prime it with alcohol primer: shellac. Then put roman pro 999 on it and hang your paper!
Watch this video which will help you answer the question you have asked here

Let me just change it because I thought you were hanging wallpaper; go ahead and put shellac which is an alcohol base primer on it. This will allow you to paint it now since all of the glue will be sealed by the shellac; but now you might have a rough surface, if you do, give it a thin skim coat, if you don’t have a rough surface, go ahead and paint it; but, if you had to skim coat, then go ahead and put Gardz Over your skim coat, wait till it dries and then put your favorite paint on it because you’re all set!
It's necessary cover the lights sockets???
Thank you so very much Spencer for the feedback, it helps in how to proceed.
It means a lot to me

Please give me a nice five star review for that.
I am amazed that that gorgeous wallpaper was put on upside down. Even the border.
Hey Spencer can I use zinsser 123 to seal?
No. It doesn’t cover over glue residue
Well Done 👏 ✔️
I use a 5 Ltr bottle that’s for watering plants in the garden with a fine mist. And an hour later jobs a good un
Excellent question.
Yes! Before and after. And yes, 1:5 too much!
Here’s what you’re going to do:
Slice deeply if you’re removing multiple layers of wallpper. Don’t worry about damage to walls. Plaster can easily repair any damage you make.

Our cats have begun some of the removal in a corner. I looked up grasscloth and it appears you knew what I meant. I’ll need to seal them then skim coat after removal ?
@@newenglandyankeeliving5052 skim coat will PROBABLY be necessary. If not, no need to go through the trouble.
@@spencercolgan
Whatever if it needs it it needs it. That I can do. I’m just glad you’ve taken the time to make these videos and to respond it’s a great help and greatly appreciated
Spencer how do I remove extra think glue residue left on the walls after the paper backing
Please watch part 2 of this. Paint over with kilz oil or BIN alcohol primer. Then Skimcoat. Prime skim with zinsser 1-2-3 and paint. You’re done.
Rick, all the respect; If you want to breath all that crap in…do it your way.
@@spencercolgan there’s dustless sanders now Spencer. There’s also a special tool to score just the drywall paper allowing the water to penetrate deeper into the paper. I have also removed many wall papers. I think this is for more of the DIY who you think is going to go all out and cause damage to their walls.
@@Juan-zd1ct yes. Juan. I have the Planex Festool dustless sander.
You are serious about wallpaper and I thank you cause I’m ready to shoot myself. Lol 😂 it took your video to remind me “ Water and Patience! “😊
Does this work on plaster.
Also, a wallpaper scorer from Loews or Home Depot will enhance water penetration without damaging plaster or drywall. I have found a broad 3" drywall tool can be used to start an edge and save your fingernails without digging into the plaster.
I guess you didn’t watch the whole video; if you did, you would’ve seen my garden sprayer in use

Go to 42:20 as well. I asked people to please review the whole video before they make comments are aske questions so that they are fair to me and they don’t cause me unnecessary loss of time by having to answer something that I have already answered in the video
Who knew Willem Dafoe was a wall paper therapist? Awesome video, thank you!
Put a humidifier into the room you seek to strip wallpaper from. As you spray water on the wallpaper, the water will be able to soak in more completely and down to the adhesive without leaching into the air. In short...make that room a tropical mess!
what about cheap wallpaper border at the top of of the wall? It has been horrible.
Don’t remove it. Go out and purchase 1 gallon of original KILZ. Let it soak put it on thick; then spread joint compound overhead with a 10 inch taping knife. Let that try, do it again. Then reapply original KILZ over your new smooth surface and enjoy yourself
WHY??? didn't you use a Wall Tiger to help get the water soak in????????
They break from friction after ten minutes. always
This helped by letting me know I didn’t need to buy anything. A spray bottle of water and my fingers and I was successful! But the video could be sooo much more concise. I also could not watch much of it due to the constantly moving camera. 🤢
Thank you
Master!
New York accent?.. 🇺🇲👍
With all respect i wouldnt use water alone , using DIF mixed with the water. Would make it lot easier. My thoughts
I respect that; i used to use that stuff long ago and I don’t like breathing it in when I spray it; if you think about it, if you do it over and over again, what does that do to your lungs?
@@spencercolgan i agree but i also found that Natural Distilled White Vinegar,
Works as a good as the DIF have you tried?
