      You are absolutely right. I wasn't born until 1985 but everything about the music from that decade is just amazing. This group here is absolutely one of the best. Such a shame that Fred White is no longer with us.

    Drove for small LA limo company with a notable clientel in early 80s. Got a call early one morning telling me to rest and get my white stretch totally together. At 5P I was to pick up Earth Wind and Fire at Beverly Hills Hotel and take them to Forum...Already a big fan I was excited. At the Forum they invited me to watch rehearsals. Afterward made certain I had a great seat for concert. After the show there was a "special restaurant" they wanted to go to for dinner. When we got there I received and invitation to eat with them...As people they were just as outstanding as their music.

      In Maurice White's autobiography, he says that EW&F got kicked off that tour - they kept blowing Uriah Heep off the stage, and Heep's management were not happy. It apparently happened to EW&F on several tours with other bands as well. Most rock groups couldn't compete with the showmanship, costumes, dance routines, and harmonies of an 8-to-9-piece jammin' funk band whose jazz-rooted musicianship beat all but the very best of the rockers.

      Sorry, but this isn’t R&B, this is more afrocuban jazz, or acid jazz, before EW&F went disco. But you can’t say they are the best, especially with Miles Davis out there who created this era of music, then you have Weather Report, Return to Forever with Chic Corea who also cut his teeth with Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock who also cut his teeth with Miles Davis, I could go on, but there were a lot of great musicians and bands from that era before Disco.
      Probably the greatest album of all time was Miles Davis “Sometime My Prince Will Come”, and of course John Coltrane was on there too.
      Earth Wind and Fire Gratitude was the first album I ever bought with my own money, and I still have it to this day, although it should be worn out with as many times I’ve played it over the years, but in context, it’s great, but it’s not the best ever.

    This video captures EWF in their early years in 1973. After a lot of personnel changes and a new direction, Maurice and Verdine emerged in 1975with a very different and much more commercially succesful band. Maurice White was not an amateur. He went to a musical conservatory, played drum sessions for Chess Records including Rescue Me and Your Love takes me higher"), he played jazz with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, he was a skilled songwriter and very succesful producer. for others. RIP.

    • @antn537
      @antn537 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Indeed, Maurice was already a very well established musician before he came up with his idea for EWF, he made an earlier attempt with a band known as ‘The Salty Peppers’.
      Prior to EWF it was said Maurice was highly sought after as a session drummer because of his distinctive powerful snare hit.
      His autobiography reveals how it was Ramsey Lewis that encouraged him to perform Kalimba solos when touring with him - which at the time he wasn’t keen on doing because he was quite shy.
      That and his growing interest in spiritualism gave him the seed for EWF, but even in the formative years of EWF he never really intended to be the lead singer (listen to the first two Warner Bros albums, he tends to sit back in the mix vocally).
      He also states that he continued to play drums on virtually all the EWF studio recordings, with Fred White and later Ralph Johnson only did it when touring.
      Interestingly much of their later live shows used pre-recorded ‘live’ backing tracks, because of his desire to present the perfect show, with all the dance moves and magic tricks. You can hear/see an example of this on a TH-cam clip of an appearance they did on the Natalie Cole show with a medley, which was filmed while they were in the middle of a tour (it features ‘Can’t Hide Love’).
      The new tracks featured on the ‘best of’ album that had September and Can’t Hide Love also featured Got to Get You in my life, which was quickly recorded mid-tour. This was partly because of scheduling, but also because Maurice wanted to get it released before the film it was intended for, because he knew the film would flop (it did flop, much like the That’s the Way of the World film they were cast in as ‘The Band’ and wrote the soundtrack/album for - which as we know was a big success for EWF with some of their most loved tracks).

    • @ArkyMalarkey
      @ArkyMalarkey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Therone Dawson: I’m old enough to have seen the Beatles perform live. Now THERE’s a group of musicians who fully deserve your “talented and great without the help of autotune” accolades. As opposed to the fab four, who couldn’t even hear themselves (let alone each other) through the excruciating noise of fifty thousand screaming girls, Earth Wind & Fire and their contemporaries enjoyed the luxury of PA’s, on stage monitoring and electric guitar tuners, but still managed to sound uncomfortably out of tune, at least on this particular video. As a professional musician, I might be a tad on the picky side, but when that guitar comes in at 2:42 a few of my fillings came loose.
      Now I won’t argue with you about the sorry state of today’s music (and actually liked one or two EW&F records), but when it comes to raw talent, songwriting and stage performance without the aid of virtually anything, no one will ever come close to this little combo: th-cam.com/video/xxVtYSFaUx0/w-d-xo.html

    This barely begins to capture their energy in 73! I saw them in 73 at Ga Tech, sandwiched between Tucky Buzzard (I mainly recall their name), and Uriah Heep. EWF blew the roof off the coliseum. At one point Verdine jumped down into the crowd and danced his way through it as he played. He eventually ended up dancing with a woman in the audience and (IIRC) even giving her a looooong kiss- all without missing a beat. And this was well before wireless rigs; he had a 100 foot cord, at least. Amazing.
    They were as much fun to watch as they were to listen to.

Trouble was the Djay didn't announce who they were - and of course there was no Shazam or Internet in those days. I finally caught up with them in 1978 and never looked back.

    I’m a fan of catchy feel-good songs and not really into instrumental jams over two chords.
    EWF’s first album had great songs and is a must-listen. The second was barely memorable. The album just b4 this concert was Last Days and Time. Other than Time Is On Your Side, it’s lackluster compared to the string of albums that was about to follow: Head To The Sky and Open Our Eyes were great albums, start to finish. That’s The Way Of The World, Gratitude, Spirit, All And All, and I Am had gems of songs on them. Not just the hits, but On Your Face, Love’s Holiday, Serpentine Fire, Saturday Night, Wait, Can’t Let Go, In The Stone, and so many others.
    It was great to see it end with Ralph Johnson as the last person on stage, and just seeing him still in the band 51 years later in September of 2024.

    I first heard Earth, Wind, and Fire my Freshman or Sophomore years in college in 1973 or 1974 when students came back from Summer break. They were the hottest group out there then and everyone of the students were playing their album or songs. I saw a repeat awards show on the Steller channel honoring Ramsey Lewis when he mentioned Maurice White as part of his group who founded Earth, Wind, & Fire. I guess that's when they co-wrote "Sun Goddess" which was released by both Lewis and White for both groups. I saw E, W, & F in concert with the O'Jays and Natalie Cole and everyone was fantastic but E, W, & F tore it up!!! They did something that made the audience on the floor lean back like a wave; I was on the floor. This was an epic show!!!
    I played in band from 7th grade through college and easily recognized them as trained and gifted musicians. This is why they were so awesome and great where no other group can ever compare to their greatness!!! Their horn (brass) and percussion sections were off the chart!!! But really every section of the band were gifted musicians!!!
    I saw Ramsey Lewis in Blues Alley in Georgetown in 1984 or 1985 with Phyllis Hyman and can't remember who the 3rd act was, but they were great too. This was around the time when Roy Ayers and Herbie Hancock were popular and charting the jazz scene.
