    Even though its been 6yrs, I want to say THANK YOU! I recently bought my first motorcycle, being a 98 Virago 250, and this is basically the ONLY video that actually shows the idle adjustment, not just referencing it (if at all). And your explanation was so easy to follow, I was able to adjust my own without too much trouble and get it going. I've been struggling for days, despite tons of Google, TH-cam, and Reddit, and your video got me adjusting and riding in minutes. I knew what to listen for and what to adjust, how to turn, and you go straight from point A to B while providing simple to understand explanations and tips. Seriously, you not only showed what to do but gave a simple explanation on the why behind it all and riding afterwards gave a great example of good sound and performance, what you might experience if off and advice on how to fix ( or if too rich which mine was doing). All great for someone like me with all experience gained being this summer with this new to me motorcycle. I am extremely thankful for this video, thank you so much.

    Thank you, sir, for the video. I have a 2014 Yamaha V-Star 250 that is running a bit rich as you were talking about. I will back that down if I can and adjust the idling as well after the battery has been recharged. I ran it down to low riding to work the other morning. Looks like an every 3 to 4-week charge on that too :) Your video has been very helpful and inspiring too.

    Mine is a 2014 (purchased in 2015, .1miles) and called a "V-Star 250" but STUDYING your vid, the engine is identical. EXCEPT, where you have the air/fuel mixture screw, I have nothing. ANYHOO...
    I just turned 32200 miles and it's still running great with only oil changes, spark plugs, chain and tires, brake pads, etc. However, I've always had to keep the choke engaged until it is really really warmed up which is tough as I don't usually go very far.
    THEN IT OCCURRED TO ME. Dial up the idle! First TH-cam search gifted me your video, made a slight turn to the idle screw and now, I come to a stop and my wee Thunder Mouse doesn't conk out. And no, I don't have the idle dialed up silly high, just enough to keep the fire pumping.
    I call it my Thunder Mouse because, well it's a 250, but the V-twin pulls quite nicely and come of the throttle, it gives a satisfying "BLAP POP BLAP" from the exhaust.
    This is my first Yamaha and my first "cruiser" style moto. I've always been into the sport bike style, mostly Honda CBRs 600cc and up with one 92 Kawi ZX-7, but I'm here to tell anyone willing to listen (or read, as it were), this 2014 Yamaha V-Star 250 (XV250C) has been the best, most reliable moto I've ever owned!
    Safe travels, my two-wheeling brothers and sisters!

I have added pod filters, but not drilled the exhausts (yet) but even with just the pods, felt it was too lean, also live in the mountains outside Sydney at 3,300' altitude but now, I will be able to get it set just right. Nice video a question dough.... seams like my bike doesnt get enough fuel (to lean mix) after i changed to a pefrormance air filter. I have tried to unscrew the mix screw to get a richer mix but after 10 turns it is just a minor improvement. Any help or advice would be nice (Btw i have not done any upgrades to the fuel system jet)

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You won't need it screwed out 10 turns, if it's more than three you would need to re jet and or lift the needle. The slide may be stuck or a fuel block

  • @apfenech
    @apfenech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Super helpful, thank you. Question though....if I put my screw all the way in, my bike runs best. If I take it out up to 2 rotations nothing happens then it dies if I keep unscrewing. This seems opposite from what you have....why is that?
    Also, where do you put your idle screw when you start the carb screw adjustments?

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't mention if you have any mods or if its even an xv250 which makes it hard to answer the question and I forewarn you I can't tune your bike via message. I'd start at 1 3/4 as mentioned. You need to wind in slowly it sensitive. If it dies after 2 turns it's rich! Which is what you'd expect if your winding out!

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do the adjustments pull your plugs, clean them ride it and pull them again and that will tell you.

    • @apfenech
      @apfenech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iRidetas it's the same, 250 virago 2005. When you say clean and check, you mean looking at the color to determine rich/lean and get them looking happy then adjust idle from there?
      Well aware you can't fix it, I always take internet advice more as guidelines anyway. :)

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes mate, pull the plugs and check the colour to make sure it's running rich or lean via the burn colour! I did find without to many mods it was pretty tolerant of the changes, wasn't till I did the carb slide and gutted exhaust and then slash cuts where I had to really alter it via reject lifting the needle etc.

    +iRodetas so here is a dumb question but to do this correctly and with confidence I must ask..... So here goes nothing. When you say turn (referring to the screws) you mean that it has to rotate 180 degrees in order to be considered a turn or does it have to be 360 degrees? Thanks

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      360 deg equals one turn. 180 deg would be half a turn.

    Just got my 09 VStar 250 running it runs great other than when you give it heavy throttle it acts like it's hitting rev limiter. Roll into it no problem it screams to redline. New plugs gapped to .24mm, new carb, tank is clean fresh 91, not sure if my tci is going bad or I'm an idiot over looking something I did add a fuel filter and I'm thinking maybe it's too high a micron and it's restricting flow. Any idea what is wrong? I'm thinking it isn't getting enough fuel so it just won't rev with heavy throttle.
    Edit. I did make sure the fuel filters arrow is going towards the carb.

    I have a completely stock Virago 250, and I drilled out my stock exhaust pipe, and now the bike surges. What I mean by that is that the throttle is hard to control; the bike surges and then sputters, uncontrollably. It's especially noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear. Also, the engine seems to be running very hot. I checked my spark plugs, and they look normal, a slight amount of carbon. My question is: Is this something that can be fixed with the fuel mixture screw, without jetting? Also, to clarify, does drilling the exhaust cause a lean condition?

      @@iRidetas By the way, one thing that really fucked me up is that everyone says the top pipe is a fake pipe, but that is not true. The back cylinder still links into that pipe through the black canister, located below the pipes. I didn't realize that. I thought it was a fake pipe, so I didn't bother to drill that one out, and that's partly what was causing the problem. The top pipe is a real pipe, and I wish people would stop spreading the misinformation that it is fake. The top pipe is real; it gets hot, and has carbon from exhaust, just like the bottom pipe. When you drill out the pipe, you have to do both of them. You did not spread the misinformation, but there are many Virago owners on TH-cam that are misleading people, and causing confusion about the exhaust setup. Anyway, thanks again for the links you sent.

    How often do you have to adjust it?

    • @iRidetas
      @iRidetas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never if you are riding a stock bike. Once after mods

    I've never done it before. Could you tell me the purpose of it and how do you know when it's right? How would it sound if it's correct?

      Mate if you are asking those question I would do some more research before messing with it.

      @@iRidetas Haha. Just trying to find a good set to order for my metric. Buncha JIS and flathead combo packs. Got some work ahead of me, amateur wrencher. My pod actually cracked today and fall right off. It looks like a stock air filter - dirty, gunked, retired. It's an 88' with 3k miles. I got the two cones, and will be taking the other pod off too. Might swap spark plugs, and already did an oil swap

      Then it is outside the range of adjustment and is to rich or lean and may need to be rejetted
