Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a major tourist attraction in the city. And when the Padma Shri decorated originator of this garden, Nek Chand, conceived this idea in the middle of last century, it was illegal and had to be kept away from scrutiny for almost two decades. The area had been designated as a forest buffer on which nothing could be built. But after 18 years when it came to limelight it was already a 12 acre complex of interlinked courtyards each with hundreds of pottery covered concrete sculptures of dancers, animals etc. So strong positive public opinion ensured its official acceptance as a public space in 1976. Finally, it appeared on an Indian stamp in 1983.
