  • Glaciers of Alaska | USA | Sixty and Travelling
Glaciers are one of Alaska's most treasured natural wonders. There are over one hundred thousand glaciers in Alaska, covering over 45000 square km area! Getting up and close to these spectacular formations is one of the most sought after experiences for any visitor in Alaska.
One of the most obvious indicators of global warming are receding glaciers. And we got to see ample evidence of that. Exit Glacier is a case in point, In just one year it retreated about 57 metres. Considering that it is a 26000 years old glacier, the speed at which glacial ice has been melting in recent past, due to global warming, is truly phenomenal.
Another notable. glacier is Matanuska Glacier, less than three hours drive from Anchorage. Its a valley glacier, 43 km long and 6 km wide. But it is privately owned (quite surprisingly), and needs prior approval for approaching it at close quarters. So we had to return disappointed and content ourselves only with a distant view from a high vantage point. But even that view was truly majestic, specially under a telescope kept there.
Holgate glacier takes the cake when it comes to close quarter viewing. On our cruise ship, we got to, figuratively speaking, within handshake distance of Holgate glacier. And what we saw was truly, awesome, mesmerizing and stunning!
Whittier town, that famous town under a single roof, had its own share of excitement when it came to breathtaking views of glaciers all around. In fact there are 26 glaciers in that limited area around Whittier, though all of them may not be visible simultaneously
There were other glaciers like Surprise Glacier, Explorer Glacier, Burns glacier, even a Shakespeare Glacier. In fact there are over 600 named glaciers and several thousand unnamed ones in Alaska.
Seeing so many glaciers together was surely an extremely novel, though satisfying experience for us.
Watch out for our next vlog!
