  • Wasn't too happy with my first version of this song and wanted to redo it. I decided to play it on the Fender this time since it is my main bass and this is a hard song to get through! Happier with this take (and got it a lot quicker than when I was using the Ric)!
    I'll do some easier older Rush stuff on the Ric as a tribute to Geddy's 70's playing but I wanted to have bit more fun jamming to this song for my cover and the Jazz definitely makes me play a lot better.
    I made a backing track from the isolated tracks and recorded my bass on top of that. No Keyboard track though so filled in the synths in the guitar solo with some bass.

    I would kill for your right hand technique! Other than Dirk, you and one other bass player I've ever seen, can pull this off. You are a most impressive bass player. Bravo.

    That was some fantastic bass playing!! Loving the addition of some parts/fills that Ged would play live. Make sure those fingers and hands are well insured, they're worth their weight in gold ha

      @@hemibass It definitely paid off! I've spent the majority of the last 35 plus years learning to play as many of his bass lines that I can. Getting that right hand technique down was quite satisfying.

    Wow. Man thats some nasty friggen groovin. Holy moly.
    What is that, R30?
    And dude... I just now started working on Geddys "Animate" groove technique to see if I could get back into playing, and you are all over that. That was a pretty awesome display of your friggen... I don't even know what to call it. But I can see you pretty much mastered the evolution of Geddy's right hand technique. And you're so relaxed about it.
    Great job, man. Thats some badass playing.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a lot, appreciate it. It's probably somewhere between r30 and Time Machine since those are the two versions I practice to the most. I really love the way Geddy played this bass part in Rush's later years.
      Yeah I love the technique too. It's fun and it's nice to try and see where he adds it into old Rush songs to get a different flavour. I'm not sure what to call it either haha. I see it referred to as 'flamenco' mostly but I call it 'flicking' and people who like Rush seem to know what I mean. It will probably feature in all my covers in some capacity I'm a bit obsessed (maybe overly so!) with doing it :)
      Thanks for watching

      Thanks! I can't remember on this one tbh I think I was just going straight into my interface and was using a free plugin for some distortion in Cakewalk. Thanks! Hit the thing hard and turn up the treble would be my guess. I wasn't using my yyz pedal in this video (regrettably) but check out my newer covers and you can see that in action. That pedal is a really quick way to get a good tone

      @@hemibass Good to hear ....I ordered The "limited edition" MP40 and was worried I had another very expensive paperweight on its way. Thanks
      - Also Ibanez SD500 doesn't seem to like being hit hard. Just got back to playing Bass. Had a Peavey Dyna Bass, a Stinger XB9 (fender JB Copy) and of course borrowed Rickenbacker from my schools music room that were fine for it when I was playing with my RUSH, Sabbath Cover Band 84-94. Debating on dropping the $2500 on a Rick soon. Kind of want to make sure I still have some life left in my fingers first. Thanks for the videos, checked out a bunch already. Cheers

      @@SCVM__ I think the pedal is great. Really improved the sound I get from my playing. You ever tried a Geddy Jazz bass? They are a lot cheaper and really nice basses. Respond especially well to hard hitting from what I can see!

      @@hemibass I have not ... there was a used one for sale in my area but like I said I wasn't even sure my fingers would work anymore (and it had black pickguard). I bought the Ibanez combo with a TNT 115 (really good cheap deal) more for the amp than the Bass just to get warmed up and back in the groove. Inevitably I will have them both anyway. I was already pricing out the Steinberger Last night as well because I'm such a Rush nutcase (I know you understand how that is 🤣 ) and I watched your Vital signs Video.

  • @warptek
    @warptek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You're bass playing is incredible and you nailed the tone BUT, just some friendly criticism, the live version you're obviously playing is just too much. I was never really a fan of it because it detracts from the song. (Even when Geddy was playing it that way btw). You're reaching. Too frenetic. Play the album version. Sounds way better.

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks. I generally prefer geddys 'live versions' of songs, especially as his playing style developed over the years, so those are the versions I base my playing on. I understand that some people prefer more restraint on bass, however that's not the case for me haha. The more flashy stuff geddy added to his parts the more I liked them! Appreciate the feedback though thanks for watching my cover
