Where are the proposals for the minimum x3-4 replacement General Purpose frigates (along with Australia's orders, they are starting to decommission their ANZACs), where are the orders for stand-off weapons (either anti-ship / anti-air missile systems or combat jets for A2AD - yes we need combat aircraft, not just drones), where is the resolve to prepare NZ for what IS to come (check out the rapidly deteriorating South China Sea situation). I note, Winston Peters is acutely aware of the situation, why is our Minister of Defence apparently not ? I along with many concerned Kiwis will be closely watching the publication of the Defence Capability Plan (DCP) document. I note the first draft is out now. There better be some serious revisions made if the necessary capabilities are not included to deal with the current decade of great danger, and the years to follow. This all about NZ measuring up to it's allies expectations, to demonstrate resolve - especially to Australia.

Simply put, there are more civilians in defence than actual soldiers, sailors and airman who create an analysis paralysis or create a cottage industry of social engineering policies with little thought of or understanding the nuanced nature or the role with which the military component of the Defence Force that serves New Zealand society - Death by a 1000 cuts - On resources, infrastructure, capability and uniformed people. The senior military leadership, very high salaried, but on a short term contract - The 'do not rock the boat' but needing to leave a career legacy through symbolism (normally some sort of carving outside a headquarters), successively kicked the can down the road in force design, doctrine, infrastructure, regeneration and the fundamentals of command and leadership in a vein hope the next leader would pick up the can. For the NZ public in general, there is an issue of context - Not understanding the role the military component serves the state in the pursuit of the national interest. Despite popular belief in some quarters, the NZ military are NOT climate change junkets, or social workers in uniform. They are the active / hard power component of the state. A challenge in the complex environment of today. Thus, it would appear for sometime, the contextual understanding has been drowned out by dismissive bourgeois intellectuals with hidden agendas that over focus on the peripheral rather than the core fundaments. You would never see the former party girl turned reporter at Stuff covering such an expose. The point is about finance. There have been successive commentators that have highlighted financial prudence in matter of defence. Often referring to equipment, ships and aircraft as 'big ticketed' items. This is a poor justification that links into the above statement on CONTEXT. Defence acquisition has never broken the bank. There has been successive decades of acquisition and management. There actually has been opportunities to develop local industry and up skill workforce specialisation that has commercial gain. That was common practice but now it is referred to today as resilience. However, there have been those in positions of influence, that have no knowledge of acquisition and operational requirements that leads into piecemeal 'horse trading' and poor decision making. Does anyone remember HMNZS Charles Upham?? - The Debacle of the C130H upgrade? - Even the shambolic midlife upgrade of the ANZAC Frigates??? Even the Boeing 757s were purchased second hand, the multimillion dollar camouflage uniforms that didn't work and fell to pieces when it rained?. The Short Term, half-pie-ka pai band aid solution that costs New Zealand greatly to fix and overhaul. The only one who benefits is the contractor who over promises and under delivers. The Defence GDP has never gone over 2 or 3% - It's peanuts compared to other sectors in government spending. If that percentage was to be redistributed to another government department, it would inevitably be tied up in administration costs and would never reach the end user! In closing, New Zealand Defence needs to be allowed to evolve with the current times and beyond. This may require a return to revisionist thinking - a blue water navy, an air force combat component, a reorientation in the army to conventional (state centric) thinking. But this can only happen with not just an overhaul, a platitude policy that is inherently superficial for political talking points. It will require a dramatic change by carving up the defence civilianised bureaucracy, scaling down the top heavy command structure - back to the core fundamentals that focuses on equipping, training leading, housing, feeding our current and future soldiers, sailors and airman. New Zealand's Defence, is New Zealand's ultimate insurance policy.

I like that the NZDF is seeing an increase in the enlistment of recruits! I also believe that compulsory 2 year military service should be reintroduced for 18 year old's, providing a 1 year combat ready program and a 1 year trade or academic subject of choice program.

If the NZ Police had drones would catch more burglars? Would reduce the number of burglaries? More cameras on streets?
In Rotorua the council spent $1m extra on cameras in their CBD and hired security officers it had a positive effect, and NZ Police relocated officers from other duties to patrol the CBD more ( regular stuff ).
Rotorua has a large population of people who are know for violence, the police have to be more proactive than other duties in NZ.
NZ does not need to have a military force, it would be better to have a militarised civil defense/reconstruction forces. Let other nations do the killing & NZ do the rebuilding. We can't afford to get into an arms race in a mad rush to get better & better weapons that cost more & more, both to buy & maintain. Turning our military forces into emergence reconstruction forces to help rebuild our nation after natural disaster of increasing frequency & intensity would be a far better use of our military budget. Don't buy tanks & cannons, buy bulldozers & cranes. If our military were trained construction forces rebuilding after would be both cheaper & quicker. Remember destroying is easy, rebuilding is harder but more valuable.
