I remember that when I was seconded to 2nd Battalion Malaysia Rangers the Battalion CO decided to form a pipe band, so volunteers were called for, and a Kadazan corporal was selected to go to Scotland (from Sabah, Borneo) to attend this school. A few months later he came back and trained the band. So, this school is not only for Scotsmen. At last the Malaysian Army had a pipe band!
the bagpipes for me, have been with me since i was a lad, and reminds me of my father and my scottish heritage. bagpipes are forever, and so are the soldiers who fight for honor and glory of their country and countryman
This brings back some memories. Great to see my mate stevie (QRH) picking up an award on his class 3 all this year's ago. And another old friend at 1:45 (Jim RHF) who was on course with me.
Yes, you do. But for civilians, you can try out Summer School courses in Glasgow, held by the National Piping Centre, the College of Piping, and the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. I teach pipes in the London/Surrey area, and have taken pupils up to Glasgow for courses, having first experienced them myself - great fun !!
I can't believe you all have the opportunity for that in the Army in the UK. We have nothing close to that here in the states. I would do it for the drumming skills alone as I have played drums for many years. Thats outstanding!
Six months from zero to parade ready~~Holy crud that's good!!!! That's what constant learning and practicing will do for you...I must be a slow learner::::
You really don't understand the lyrics of the song, the meaning, and fortitude it offers. Comprehension is the biggest part of music. You have to understand the author-- it's a frame of mind so to speak.
yes, the pipes are invigorating, but they belong on the kind of battlefield thats gone forever. the kind where you actually face the enemy from 20 feet away as hes comin at ya like a rabid pitbull holding a 3 foot blade !! and there was 200 other dudes comin with him!!
How much did you expect to learn in one weekend out of the whole year? I've been at it for five years now, and feel like I've only scratched the surface..
i think the main difference is that the english are civilized and live in towns like london and the scttish are not, wear checkered rags and their leader is braveheart i think. or maybe william wallace.

Brilliant soldiers and brilliant bagpipe musicions BUT, Crap at Rugby and Football. BUT, They make up for that by having the most beautiful country and are nice and friendly to every one except the English which is O K by me as I Don,t like them either.
Indeed :), We claimed it xD. If he wants to get technical, they "stole" it from the Native Americans that were there before them that they killed millions upon millions of. I think that it's all fair :).
Played in this years tattoo for the first time. What a feeling !!Marching out over the drawbridge playing the 10th HLI was out of this world.
