I was a serious workaholic 20 odd years. It wasn't uncommon for me to have up to 3hr commute some days depending on traffic. When I was first forced to work from home I hated it. But a few months in I suddenly found myself finding a work life balance I never had experience before. I told my boss a few months ago if they wanted me to go back to the office I would find a job elsewhere. Not only was I told I could work from home permanently, I also received an unsolicited raise. Second of the year. I have never stood up for myself when it comes to work. Never asked for a raise before just graciously accepted them as they came. Have never said "No" before at work. Haven't taken a vacation in 12 years. The response from My employer made me realize that they're afraid to lose me. And value me. My whole life I've been afraid of losing my job so always just took whatever was thrown at me. It was a bit of a wake up call for me as to where the power lies. Mind you I still work 50-60 hours a week and get paid for 40 lol but when I am not driving 42 miles to the office each day in traffic anymore, I have a life again. Also love taking my 30 min walk with my dog at noon and recharging my battery. Mind you I am not one of those that's "quiet quitting". I don't have that in my DNA. Working from home has been amazing for both my mental and physical health.

Working from home saves, gas, electricity, time. I don't (and can't) work from home, but I fully support it. What else does this reduce? Some of what most here have: - 37 hour work week, for some this even includes a ½ hour paid break time per day. - 5 weeks paid vacation minimum, many have 6. - Paid sick days. - Paid 1st day a child is sick. - Living wages. We don't have a law that specifies what an hour pays, but even McD pays a living wage here. - Rules on work schedule ie. your boss can't just change your schedule, it must be done in advance. And if you're asked to work extra there are compensation, like for example if there like an emergency at work and I have to work on a Sunday I'll get 200% extra pay. - Paid bank holidays. . . . What we need is for CEOs, VPS, Department heads, to get Covid... That's the only way they will change their tune. My office of 12 has two bosses in their 60s and three workers with small kids. I think their pushback will keep us working from home, perhaps at least until January.
In a time where most companies are struggling to find good competent employees, this move is just plain stupid. Perhaps they could take the radical choice of encouraging current valued employees and sell off their largely overpriced real estate holdings. To flip the famous Gordon Gecko quote, "Greed is good"; well now is time for employees to be "greedy" with taking and keeping a larger control over their lives and work/life balance. Remember, no company or business is entitled to be in business and business owners are NOT "job creators". The real job creators are the consumers that purchases goods and services.
@RodDC The problem isn't a shortage of good, competent employees. The problem is most large employers have treated their FTE's as "resources" to be used when needed, and fired / retired whenever there was a downturn in the business. As a consequence, employees have come to the conclusion that they owe their employer zero loyalty. The outcome - and I speak personally - is I'm not going back into your office space. I have an hour long commute each way to get there, and the home office I set up at my own expense is far more productive so give me a good reason to go back into an office environment.

More corporations trying to go back to the old ways of micromanaging employees and forcing them to work long hours away from their families when their jobs can get done easily from home. A hybrid schedule allows flexibility and better work-life balance for their workers but comes at the expense for the company’s bottom line 🤷🏻♂️

I'm voting for the workers. The hybrid model is more efficient in many respects than 5 days in the office, away from family and home, long commutes, etc... Employers may need to downsize some of that extra office space they're holding onto.

Hybrid only works if everyone is in the office together, if the goal is in person collaboration. Otherwise, it's just people working remote from a different location.
If you think these companies are going to keep paying you full pay for staying home you are dreaming. They will either cut your pay or if it can be done remotely they will fire you and hire some for half the amount from another country. They will make it a win for them.

The thing is, working from home has saved me hundreds, if not thousands, on gasoline and insurance. It saves time. It’s better for the environment. I honestly think if a company can go virtual, they should. Working from home is proven to increase employee productivity and happiness. There is no reason to force employees back into stuffy offices that can trigger medical problems and radically impact their ability to even work there, as gasoline is expensive, other than to have someone to micromanage.
I see it as a power play to stay relevant. Knowing alot of people don't have other options or have been with a company for so long it will be to late to learn a new skill set or compete with the amount of potentially fresh blood in the market. My supervisors do everything to make work more annoying requiring direct calls for things that can be handled with a simple yea or no via chat just to pad their supervisor help request logs.
It's funny how front line employees think that they should tell the companies they work for "how it is." Companies allowed people to work remotely to help prevent many deaths and white collar workers just think that It's how it should be forever.
It makes sense to have most workers working from home. It would reduce the need to travel, hence reduce the need for spending money on gas and maintenance on a vehicle. The companies could reduce the amount of money they need to spend on office space, thereby increasing money for payroll and stockholders. Having workers working from home would also reduce the stress on workers who have families. For many workers, there really is no reason to work in an office in this day of computers. The companies that want workers back in the office sound to me as i f all they care about is being able to physically "boss" their employees around. Save money, reduce the office space and use it for something more constructive....say HOUSING for those in need!!

The biggest reason why bosses and owners want their workers back in the office is because cities are losing money. Restaurants, payed parking, etc etc are loosing money big time right now. The city business need the office workers back much more than anyone else.
True, but that's not our problem. When it's convenient for corporations to toss thousands of people out of work, no one in power bats an eye. Companies have this attitude that they "own" their employees, and they want to micro-mange and control them, rather than focusing on what needs to be done. Remote work is the best use of technology to save the health and well being of the employees.....
Ive been working from home long before the pandemic. And just hearing the words “they want oversight of people in the office”. That statement alone would make me want to quit. Bottom line is some companies will offer remote work and valued employees will simply quit and go work somewhere else. Experienced people don’t have a hard time finding another job.
I know people who work in the office and do absolutely nothing. Going into the office doesn’t mean people will be more affective. I understand some jobs can’t be remote, but I notice lots of companies have switch to a hybrid workplace.

Working from home you work less hours (travel to work counts as working hours, because you do not get to decide how you spend that time, you are forced to do it by your company) and paying for transport to work (Once again, money deducted for your salary to get to work, it's an effective pay cut).

Many workers enjoy working from home and companies don't want to give up that control (plus they need to justify the cost of unused office space). Companies realize that without that in-person interaction, they lose that emotional hold on the workers that keeps many employees loyal to a company that has no loyalty to the employee. The worst thing is I'm sure they can and will pressure people to go back to the offices. Mandated by bosses and owners who are more often than not, not even present setting an example. And btw, I'd love to see by show of hands how many people actually make use of the entirety of the time they're forced into an office. Companies trying to force us back in when there's no reason we can't work from home is only going to hurt them. We've been so beaten down for so long in office that employers forget that nothing runs without us, but they'll learn or they'll fail, simple as that. Working from home is better for the employees, the environment, and even the company as a whole.
Nothing runs without office workers?? Really classist bs. Nothing runs without low paid slaves who ship things through Amazon or stock your shelves with groceries. Entitlement of office workers want good pay and benefits and all the comforts of home. We’d do well without millions of redundant office jobs that market more and more luxury products plenty of people can live without. The reality is that “essential” workers haven’t had that luxury to sit at home despite risking getting co-vid, they’ve continued to work and they haven’t cried about it. working from home is tanking this country’s economy! Some people really seem oblivious that working from home will only perpetuate a county of have’s and have nots and that’s gonna blow up in everyone’s face.
Less people in the office means less cars on the road during commute times, less pollution being spewed out while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. If the job doesn’t actually require 5 days in person, don’t force it. There’s enough manual labor and direct customer service positions already. We should be using our internet infrastructure to reduce the strains on our physical infrastructure.

Oh, workers are damned sure they don't want to waste hours on the road every day, putting one at risk, to sit in a cubicle, by yourself, doing meetings with colleagues via Zoom anyway...just to make some rich guy happy... Office space is a waste of money and is just "mine is bigger than yours" thing for the guys at the top who honestly don't care about their workers and are willing to put them at risk just to look good... Oh well, push me to go back, I'll show you, I'm 64, I'll retire...they rehired me off lay off as a remote worker, for less than what I was getting... money not back yet and neither will be I.
If you mean ensuring you're doing your job to the best of your ability you're exactly right. Can you imagine paying someone for their time and efforts and not being able to inspect where your money is going? And it's not just ensuring people are actually working, you also have the benefit of team collaboration, observing processes and tweaking them to be more efficient and probably the most important, you work on relationship building skills. Don't forget even Sr leadership in most companies worked from home in the pandemic. These are typically very driven people who even found themselves putting in less effort. If their quality dropped and they're usually workaholics, how bad do you imagine things got for the Frontline?
Instead of making your employees work in the office, sell of that unused office space and let your employees who want to work from home. If a job can be done from home and the employee prefers that, make it so! It's cheaper for everyone.
This is mainly the traditional services companies (Banking, Financial, Insurance, Healthcare, etc.) that are doing this and a lot of them are East coast based. Key thing is the office space they are paying for, that is what is motivating these companies to get bodies back in the office. The leases they have on office space are expensive, and can be punitive if broken. It is also the mentality of "If I don't see you then how do I know you are working." Which even with people in the office there are slackers who slide by the way and collect a paycheck. So these companies need to adapt, or die. It is not the employee's fault, it is the companies for not treating them with some common sense and decency.

It seems like these people are surplus to requirements and only feel comfortable when they can impose their presence on an office full of people who don’t need them to actually do their job

The entire job can be done from home and there is absolutely no reason to force people to drive up to 2 hours a day just to goto work. Another in the never ending crying by office workers. What adds salt in the wound is why the media and pendents focus on this group as a being in need of sympathy. They also drone on and talk as if every one who works, works in an office. I know plenty of people where I work, who wold like to have a clean climate controlled and quiet work environment. Add to this even the fed says office workers only work about 4 hrs/ day. It puzzles me why employers put up with coddling this group, when they feel OK about keeping their "classified" employees on a short leash and with many more rules, and punishments.
Unless you have a severe physical medical issue preventing you from leaving your home, you should go back to work. "New Normal" isn't good for your mental health.

And if they feel (like many of us do) that hours upon hours are being wasted sitting at a desk instead of invested in perhaps, family. Most days many people don't really wrok those 8 hours.
It's all just plain evil and it should be regulated by now. No one should be forced to go back and it should all be performance driven.
If you can do the same job from home and be as productive, or even more productive, these companies need to end those leases and save money! Let those people stay home!
There is 0 reason I need to do my job in an office. I'm a software engineer.. I write code on a computer. My team lead doesn't even live in the same state. Forcing me to sit at a desk for 8 hours is just to force me to sit at a desk for 8 hours. It's really stupid. Someone monitoring your time and micromanaging like you're a child. You can't be away from your desk for a long time, take a long lunch, take breaks as needed to do whatever you need to do. Quality of life inside an office just SUCKS when you don't have to be there. not to mention waking up early..sitting in traffic both ways.. having no time to come home and cook and enjoy your night before you're pulled back into the same scenario day after day. its miserable.

If you mean ensuring you're doing your job to the best of your ability you're exactly right.

@Marie Lucas What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Perhaps for some people but that's most definitely not true for everyone, myself included. My day to day anxiety level has lowered while my productivity has risen.
@@RawStickySweet
Oh christ... here we go with the "anxiety" bit.
I understand that being at home is a "safe space" but being coddled in life doesn't toughen you up.
I say this as a person that does experience anxiety in very specific situations, but I don't avoid them.
Why? I mean, if one can work well from home, why should they be forced into a full office setting - versus either all WFH, or a hybrid mix? What justification can one have to remove that choice, when the choices can coexist at least?
@@DanknDerpyGamer
I'm not denying choice. I'm saying it's better for people to face the real world other than face it through a screen.
It's why I sold my home in the AZ market and moved to a cheaper place to live when my company said we were work from home for thr foreseeable future.
Can't call me back to the office. 🤣

They eventually agreed to it and then like a month later they announced every person was staying remote permanently.
Hell the head of our department ended up leaving AZ too
@John Baptist still employed there.
In fact the entire company went to permanent work at home
Even the head of the department sold their house and left Arizona
Most people never stopped working on location. It's just the top 25% that are spoiled and want to remain spoiled. Get back to work! Fire these people and replace them.
🤣 you're a hater lol! I work 4 jobs from home making 475k. I love it! 😛
> *Get back to work!*
WFH is working, so GG, telling people to get back to what they are already doing - not that I expected good arguments out of someone who argues the equivalent of "others can't work from home due to their job, therefore those who can work from home shouldn't have that option." 🙄🙄
What is wrong with people!;get back to work or get fired!
I am more productive, have a better work/life balance and happier working at home than I ever was in thr office.
Why do you assume being in an office makes you more efficient?
> *get back to work*
So, get back to what they are already doing? Psst, work from home IS working. "What's wrong with people," you ask, it's like some how you can't grasp the idea that people don't want to lose benefits they already gained (in this case, less commutes, lower costs (lower gas bill for instance), better productivity, etc.
@@DanknDerpyGamer ..oh please.. it's lazy and employers have been losing millions of dollars due to people working from home .
"JUSITFY THE OFFICE SPACE THEY ARE PAYING FOR" I've been on the corporate side of things and all I'm hearing is "THE PRODUCTIVITY IS DOWN COMPARED TO WHEN THEY WERE IN THE OFFICE, GET THEM BACK IN!" Fcking corporate greed lol
They need to be the one to be in those office!!! The workers voice matters!!
I never want to work in an office again. Let me work at home forever

If these lazy workers continue this, then soon companies will start to hire cheap workers from countries like India, pakistan and Nigeria.
Facts: UAE and Canada did the same thing
You're contradicting yourself. If they do not want to hire remote workers then they would not hire remote workers in other countries.
If they are going to do it, then they will. Dedicated workers has never stopped them from taking jobs off shore before.

@@LindaC616 you're dumb aren't you?
Workers from developing countries like India, pakistan and Nigeria are 50 × less cheaper as compared to the workers from America. So why won't they hire workers who are going to work hard + bring extra profit to the company?
Canadian companies did the same thing, they started hiring workers from India and Pakistan. In the end, they earned tons of profit.
I quit and found remote work 😃

Why would you want to go back to the office when you could be just as productive at home without all the bs
Why are people wanting to become isolationist crabs? I don't see it beings healthy for mental health long term.
I was just told that I have to go back to work one week out of the month, I'm updating my resume. I don't like the idea of having to go back to the office especially in the winter months, especially when there are so many options.
They can stay in the office by them selfs if they want.
