    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
    Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
    Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
    Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
    Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
    Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
    Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
    Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

    I'm 21 and I know how to cook more then most of my friends that are around my age. But as soon as I turned ten I was expected to help on the kitchen and by thirteen I was expected to be able make dinner on my own. I can even make bread from scratch.

    I will never understand why so many of us became so reliant on "the grid." It's tough to hear stories about some control against things like the wood fire. It just makes more sense to provide for oneself - especially when it comes down to the basics of survival. We put way to much responsibility of others. I can tell you that I've relaxed a bit too much. I don't believe this is a novelty at all, but rather a necessity to community and mostly self. The tough part is to get something back that you've let go. The great thing is,, it's never really gone, you just have to relearn it while its easier, instead of crash-learning it when its really needed. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing your lifestyle. It's not only inspirational, it's the way to a person's freedom.

    Hey Boss, love your videos, I watch everyone, sometimes several times. But I gotta say this, with all respect. But, a lot of off griders/home steaders would love to have a wood stove like yours, including myself, but they just can't afford one. As for myself, I am a disabled Vet trying to survive on a very small income. There are months that after I pay my few bills I have to live off $200 or less. Buying a used wood cooking stove is way out of price for me. And installing it is out ragious, ie stove pipe etc. I am 65 and and live alone. But hey, I'm not complaining. The VA is helping more than I could ever dream.

    I lived for a summer off the grid.. I used a great woodstove to cook, boil water for baths and dishes.. and to keep warm! I wanted to stay forever but in September we had to move back to town as my kids had to return to school. I so enjoyed that life,, we had fishing and wild berries and mushrooms. Oh that I could return to that life! Not only are you a great carpenter it appears your a great cook to! Have a great day!

      When I was a kid my dad packed us up and took us out of the city every chance he got. I asked him if we could just live at the camp and he always had an excuse why we couldn't. I wish he would have just let us grow up there. Life was always so much simpler at the camp and that's why I went to the woods as soon as I could. ... and stayed there. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    This was so helpful, my husband and I are gathering skill sets and supplies to move our growing homestead off grid and into the woods when he leaves the military. We are down to a few large purchases necessary to make this dream come true one is a log mill and the other is a wood cookstove. We hope to have everything we need to build our new home paid for and have had practice using these items. Once we are able to save enough to buy a cookstove we plan to stop using our electric power here in this house to be prepared for our new life in a cabin. Some women want luxury cars or fancy vacations, I want a wood cookstove and a homestead. We've dreamed of this since we met, though the dream has evolved to being completely self sufficient. I really enjoyed this video and hope you do more like it.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are LOTS of great buys on woodburning cookstoves on ebay but I never find any deals close to where I live. Electricity is a wonderful thing and if a person is frugal with it, it's a very affordable convenience. My homestead is on the grid but my total accumulated bill for the whole year was 386 bucks so I never bothered dumping money into solar. When the cabin is finished I'll be living there off the grid but with solar power. When you shut your power off you could still run electric lights for task via 12 volt battery like I do at the cabin. LED bulbs go a long way on a single charge. I wish you the very best of luck with your new homestead plans.

    Hi,
    There is an art to cooking on a wood stove. One has to develop a relationship with your cooking stove/heating stove. Learning about your stove, how long it takes to heat to temp, how long it will stay at temperature , etc. takes time and commitment. I love it! I have a Tulikivi wood burning fireplace.. It has taken much time to develop our unique relationship.
    Thank you for your you tubes!

This also has a back boiler which will be doing our hot water and heating 5 radiators elsewehere in our houseboat. We get our wood for free from my families forestry company and also trees on our own land. We were reliant on two log burners for our main heating source but this Rayburn will take our off grid and self sufficiency venture to the next level. Can't wait.

    I like this episode as well as every other show you've done. I like how you live and share your wisdom. I want to elaborate a little, if I may, on the use of the removable burner lids. If you look on the bottom of your heirloom cast iron skillet you'll see a ring or lip. That lip was designed to fit inside the stovetop when the burner lid was removed. This sealed the pan and stove together so no heat or smoke could escape. Cooking without removing the burner plates, as they are called, is a form of in-direct heat. Removing the plate and placing the pan in the inside the burner allowed direct heat with no barrier between the fire and the pan or pot. This gave the cook more controlled cooking temperature from the same location on the stove. Next time you need a simmer, try it on the cooler end but remove the burner plate. You'll still find plenty of uses for the hot side I'm sure. Thank you for sharing and allowing me to share as well.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct regarding the burner plates as the vintage stoves had multiple size rings. The new stoves don't however , just one or two very large rings. Personally I don't like removing the rings as the pans get sooty and this makes a mess when cleaning them. I appreciate your input all the same. Cheers :-)

    Good video Boss! My grandma had one. One day I asked her why she didn't have something quicker and less messy? She told me keep it simple stupid K.I.S.S. Words to live by and some of the best advice I ever had. Did you build all the cabinets and wood paneling in this place also? You are a master craftsman and I'm glad to see some people are still trying to teach the old ways to the new generation. Even if it is on video.
    Keep them coming!

      If you ever get one, and don't just put it in the basement like most folks, you will LOVE IT. I really enjoyed the old Crawford I had in here but the KQ is super functional and plays an important role in the homestead. For about 6 months of the year the ovens always hot. I'm lovin it.

      AULTimate OUTDOORS I have a 5 burner gas cooktop that I use most of the time and a large toaster oven. I do have a full convection oven as well but only use it when I have a large amount of baking to do, which isn't very often.

    I live in Switzerland, and have been over here for 8 years. I have a great friend who's a dairy Farmer. The Farm house is located in the stan structure as the barn where the cows are living. During the winter here they stay mostly inside. Anyway, the house is now in it's 4th Generation. And in the kitchen they have a Wood Stove. They have an Oven, and cooking top like yours. They also have the water intake and out-take that heats the radiators int eh house, and the water for consumption. One thing they have built into their counter is a ben that is pulled out and down that is filled with the fire wood. You don't see the wood until you need it. The flue pulls really well, and the stove keeps the kitchen very warm. Which traditionally where the family stayed during the Cold Winter months here. acts like a living room. Great video, and great points.

    thankyou so much. your very educational on woodstoves and related issues, i live in canada, im a mountain man kinda guy. hunt for most my food and fish and can foods. have a big smokehouse. and i have 2 woodstoves in my house. one is an old royal woodstove oven. i love cooking on it, but like you say. u pretty much have to sit beside it and feed it wood. i use wet birch wood so the oven dont get to hot and last longer. its joined in with my big woodstove on the same pipes with a T joint. has plenty of draw, but after seeing your video, im going to save up and buy the same stove u have. i think your very knowledgeable. thankyou

I have a small local made wood stove with a small oven in my first cabin, I took some video on the way back from my last trip, going to do a little tour of the cabin type video, took some video of the stove to, hopefully get It edited & uploaded when I gets back.. Wood heat, wood cooking, sounds just fine to me. Great video, thanks for taking the time to teach us.
    My family lives a simple life growing food and teaching our kids how to cook etc. There are so many families, to busy in the tech world, that they don't even know who their kids are. Sad, I think it is more important to spend time with family, live simple and provide for your own welfare. Nature will give you everything you need. Cheers from Ontario!!!

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couldn't agree more John. I think teaching your kids how to provide for themselves and get by without the grid is the best thing you can do for them. They can always choose their own path as they grow up but having the knowledge of self reliance sends them to the world pretty well armed. My hat's off to ya.

    Boss thank you for all your videos I really enjoy everyone of them. Love cooking on my wood stove but you had a great point that the bigger fire box is better. When I upgrade mine I will be using your advise.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are pros and cons to both small and large fireboxes. If the stove will be used as a primary heat source, then the large firebox is a must. If you have another woodstove that is depended on for heat, then a cookstove with a small firebox may be better because the small firebox type, like the Crawfords and Glenwoods, heat up quick and cooking can be achieved with a small amount of wood. The Kitchen Queen needs a larger fire to get the job done. I burn a LOT of wood with that KQ stove I have but it's a wonderful stove to bake with.

    We live totally off the grid up on a mountain in Colorado. ( solar-powered)
    I grind my own wheat for flour, etc.
    I only have a small wood burning stove, but thankfully a nice area on top to cook. (It also heats our home and water.)
    Each day I try to be more self sufficient of not using the grocery store.
    We also have two large garden windows to allow us to grow veggies in the winter. 😊
