  • This is a brief history of a lifetime of chasing dreams. Proof that when you lose the need for instant gratification and work IN the direction of the things you want, you can have all the things you want and be who you want to be.
On my channel you will find videos pertaining to homesteading, gardening and living off the grid with fun DIY projects for self-reliance and SHTF emergency preparedness situations, with some campfire cooking and good old backwoods humor thrown in. Sharing knowledge and stories from over 30 years of living in the woods.

    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

Thank you for the kind words Nicole. Glad you enjoy my videos. Life is what you make of it. Our society wants instant gratification and quit when they can't have it. Chasing dreams aint for quitters. If people could learn to work towards things they'd achieve a lot more than they do.
    All the best to you.

just watched this video. We have been following you for a few years. I am a New Hampshire farmboy. left when I was 18 to make my way. Traveled around as you did for many years. Settled in Fl. for many years. Owned a number of companies that did well. two years ago I had 4 heart strokes in 2 months. Dr said I had to get out of the heat. Closed my very busy company in the marine maint industry and my girl found us places to look at in Alaska. Been here almost 2 years now and we love it. this video really touched home with us. Thank you for sharing this video. I hope one of my videos some day touches someone like yours do to us. Sarah and Rob. We are 13 miles from the closest road or town.

@@curmudgeinnak Glad you enjoyed my video and thanks for taking the time to say so. Like you, I endured my share of medical issues. Cancer had me circling the drain for a while but I'm too damn stubborn to surrender. Now turning 61 and wife at 62, we're plunging forward into our next chapter and returning to the cabin where this video was filmed. Lots of travelling in the future too so you never know... our paths may cross someday. All the best :-)

@@thebossoftheswamp Well, if you wonder up this way there will always be a place for you all in the quest cabin. Living on the whistle stop train service is a blast. Thank you for taking the time to respond.. Not sure of you area but I grew up in Derry and spent a lot of my spare time at my grandfathers helping him in his Bakery in Hillsboro. You are a very wise man....and you make good videos. I often tell people (especially young people) to figure out what you love doing and find a way to make money at it. I think that most people have it backwards and find a job to make money and think that will make them happy. It rarely works that way.

Happy to hear you enjoy my vids and will share them with your children. I cringe whenever I hear someone say "I cant' or "I don't know how" and that's thier excuse why they are not doing something. I certainly don't know everything and haven't done everything but it's only because I haven't learned it yet, it's not that I CAN'T do it because I can, and will... as soon as I learn how. Success builds confidence. One dream fulfilled will lead to another and another and so on. All the best to you.

    Hello my friend.
The beginning of your life story and how you have remained persistent to accomplish your dreams was very inspirational to those who have the same desire and I wish them all of the luck.
For myself, I live off grid in a small cabin that’s deep in the woods and I wouldn’t change a thing. This life is slowly catching up with me and one day my dream will be gone. I’m 71 years old and a post polio survivor, this lifestyle is becoming harder each day. So I saw follow your dreams and never give up, even if it’s for a short while. God bless you and keep on keeping on.

Thank you for doing this my friend. I'm 49 years old. I'm a successful "professional" with a degree, a family and a nice big house in the suburbs. I have everything except what I really want; which is a slice of tranquility in the woods. I've spent my life working for others so that one day I might relax, yet I find my goal farther away than ever. Your story has helped me realize that waiting for the right time will never get me where I want to be. It's time for me to just do it. God Bless!

My favorite video so far. Amazing thanks for sharing. I tell my kids that if they don't like the big scene there is always the bush. I had hope of being a wildlife & lanscape photographer but it seemed my work never was good enough as I was trying to shoot for stock so realizing I was about to starve went back to the machine. My case is kind of different as I started life in the bush & my cabin years were just deeper in so actually wanted out. As example my old trapping partner offered me his line as he retired for 2500$! 75 miles of it but I had no interest. The fellow that bought it made huge on it & has it still today & lines in B.C., are area ownership. It is worth maybe $150,000 today I wanted out of bush but after some years started back hunting & chose spot with gzillions of miles of bush for backyard until 31 but work a day city wife & kids is my life now. I guess a young person today without capital could buy a parcel & make payments but a lot more difficult than our days. One thing I encourage is even in city to get out when you can & if one has tikes take them fishing & hunting or just out camping or such if one can. I mean 1/3 of Canadians now can afford food or shelter but not both. To those I understand.

Tossdart I hhad left home at 16 and after paying rent for 2 years for a shithole apartment, I said "screw that" and found myself a piece of land out in the woods. I paid a hundred a month on the land and built myself a cabin, then moved into it when I was 21. That's where my story begins. If I can't live in the woods, then put me in my grave "-)

Receiving this message on Christmas day is a very fine present in itself. Thank you for this. When I launched this video, I really had no idea where it would lead or how it would be received. I'm very pleased that so many are moved by it. I have a LOT to say on the subject of LIFE because "LIFE" has always been my passion. My journals have been a very important tool in my evolution. Reading my own words, trials and tribulations and analyzing the results of my actions vs outcomes, it has enabled me to stay focused and constantly moving forward. I will elaborate more on this in future videos. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. All the best to you.

You never know what life is going to throw at you so "waiting" may never get you there. Rushing into something doesn't work either. Babystepping towards what you want will get you there and makes the least impact on the wallet. I only have 9 grand invested in the cabin property and about 5 or 6 in the cabin itself. A lot less than most folks spend on a vehicle. You can have everything you want, just gotta go get it. Best of luck my friend.

Not that you care of course but you will understand . . . some years back I bought a framed picture. . a girl working in her garden. . . shoulder length dusty brown hair. . .dress / apron . . cabin or garden shed behind her. . . with her cat, the garden overflowing with produce. I brought that home and proudly hung it in my kitchen. . thought, that's what I want my life to look like. I look at it daily and say, yep, that's what I want!!! A place for a clothesline (you talked about that in one of your other vids - - - here I cannot have such a device, imagine!!) So I grow a lot of my food, sew what I'm able. . . and keep eliminating unnecessary items I felt years ago I had to have. Such silliness. . Moving in the direction of my perfect life.. . thanks for the perspective. .. sitting here watching and listening, feel I've been able to have conversations I've never been able to have most of my life.. . .. there's a completion if that makes sense.. enough of my babbling. . Blessings. .

My son grew up in the country. After a tragic loss at an early age, the woods became everything to him. He never wanted to sleep indoors and played, camped, hiked and found shelter and solitude. in our surrounding forest. When old enough he worked for the MDC and local fire departments that helped him gain more knowledge about the state parks around us.
Now college age, extended family has stressed the importance of attending university. He felt obligated to follow their advice. He was encouraged to study business. Its only been a few weeks after leaving for WVU, but in talking with him on the phone i can since a light extinguished. :(

Sorry to hear he has been pushed into what is not necessary. I know very few that have ever been rewarded by their college professions. Most are just plagued by their school loans. Following your heart is the key to success, not the desires of others. Again, sorry to hear he was pushed into this.

Life is truly what you make of it. I've had my share of downfalls but ya just gotta keep plunging forward and never stagnate. So many people nowadays do the same crap day after day year after year and even though they want things to be different, they don't make any changes. You have to make sacrifices and trade off one thing for another. A life in the woods hunting and trapping cost a lot less than living in the city but people act like they can't afford to do it. Society is bass akwards..

I do enjoy the time I get to spend in the woods with my dad. I also make it a point to go camping in Moose River Plains every year with my friends from high school. We all love the Dacks and can't wait every year too get up there.

I'd love to see your part of the country and have a few beers with ya on glacier ice. All the best buddy and thanks for watching.

Swamp Boss you are truly an inspiration. I been following a similar dream since I have been a young boy and also leave in a cabin in the woods and enjoy my sportsman paradise daily. It was my biggest goal when I was small to live in a cabin. I grew up in the Adirondacks and now reside in Central NY and currently still doing the 40 hour a week grind. I am looking forward to the upcoming hunting and trapping season. We had some good success this past weekend goose hunting. Love the videos!

Thank you for the video. I truly understand because I too dreamed and wanted nothing more than to live that life. Family and their needs took precedent and dreams get stowed. To be frank, I never felt shorted but at times I found myself yearning, In my fifties and somewhat successful, I decided to pursue. It took over 2 years of disappointments and reality checks. Not giving up I pushed on, I have what I have since named "Woodchuck Hills" - a log cabin on 26 acres. My children come for the weekends, my wife down by the pond with a book, a smile and a cup of tea. I find myself with a silly grin wandering the property in complete contentment. Yes, the peepers are deafening.

My losses have helped to make me fully human. . . how sad that it took so many losses. .. and so many years before I began to work toward my life of truth. Again, thank you for sharing your wisdom. . .sorry for your losses as well but bravo you picked yourself up and carried on. What you share confirms I'm on the right path for myself. . . being one with nature. . .b/c we are nature. . are we not! Your words have brought me incredible peace today after a very rough and ugly week--and an often rough life. Heart felt thanks. .. and when you're able. . do share more about gardening. . . . how exciting is gardening!! Blessings

+Christine Beauchamp Life is full of losses. I have suffered many and will continue to do so. One of these days I will lose Frankie and that will gut me. My only recourse is to be thankful for the times I spent with him and carry on. Losses give us choices. They can be baggage or stepping stones. It's live and learn Christine. Cheers :-)

I've always told my parents, when i get older i'm going to buy land and build a cabin there just like the old days, i always thought how they were living back then was cool because they had to hunt for the food and stuff like that, so that's how i want to live. (GREAT VIDEO)

Here i sit a 34 year old man with my two college degrees (I just now paid off), I make plenty of money and envious of a man who followed his true passion and does what he loves. I used to always say my kids would go to college when i have them, now I will tell them to follow their passions instead. Thanks JC

Just finished watching your "Life Philosophies To Coyotes". Do you realize most people couldn't handle 7 degrees above let alone 17 below. Ha ha ha I love the seasonal weather. This video makes number 100 or so I decided to quit counting. My gosh you must have a thousand of them. I've enjoyed everyone of them, I'm very fortunate to have other talents other than the job I worked for 48 years. Not bragging but in my earlier years I worked many jobs couldn't find one I liked. 72 years old man I'm finally livin the dream. A big THANK YOU, my friend I'll keep watching. :)
