- Nero is notorious for being the first Roman emperor to systematically target early Christians, but his atrocities were mostly limited to the city of Rome itself. The little-known and short-reigned emperor Decius would be the first to use the full might of the empire to persecute believers of the fledgling new faith.

One question though. What is the link between Nero and the '666' in revelations? Is it that he became synonymous with the persecutions?
It's not a universally accepted explanation, but if you take Nero's name and his formal titles and convert them to their equivalents in Talmudic numerology, you get 666. It's speculated that Revelation may have been written in anticipation of Nero bringing about the annihilation of the church, which would explain him being the Beast--but clearly Nero had no such luck.

For a hot minute there I was entertaining the fantasy of how different the world would be had Nero triumphed but then I remembered we live in a world where QAnon exists and would always exist regardless.

Why were the Jews exempted from Decian's mandate? Everywhere I look for information on this subject, the source only mentions that they were exempt. Nobody even goes so far as to say, "we don't know why the Jews were exempt," they state it as though it goes without saying and doesn't beg any questions. It's so bizarre.
Because they weren't interested in taking over the entire empire's population, but were only interested in governing their own land according to their customs. On the other hand, early Christianity was basically like the radical left of today's time. They were not willing to compromise with the establishment due to a fundamental difference in how they viewed the past history of the Roman Empire, they wanted to tear down the institutions of the Roman Empire and replace it with their own institutions which fit their "morality".

3rd century is my favorite of Roman history. Quite a few parallels to the Punic Wars and Late Republic Civil Wars, and everything that happens in the 5th century got started in the 3rd or 4th centuries. You should do a video on Timesitheus, an underrated Roman who rose up the ranks from a military tribune to de facto head of state as Gordian III's father in law and Praetorian Prefect. Much like Emperor Carus, he successfully campaigned in the Balkans and against the Persians before dropping dead, both of those instances forcing Rome to pull back to antebellum borders.

@@tribunateSPQR I just remember hearing about all this stuff and reading about the emperors and officials that were peripheral to the rise of revolutionary attitudes, the anticipation for the messiah, the subsequent rise of supposed messiahs, the death of the innocence, etc. When my dad was in bible college and I was just like 6 years old. It really got my imagination and love for the faith ingrained. It was a joy more than I chore for me.
I may be biased as a Christian, but the historical basis for Christianity and the known facts of it are so intriguing. I'm looking forward to your next project.

nero was not the beast in rev 13. he may have been the man of sin in 2 thes 2 though
I realized that while Christianity dealt with polytheism in the Roman Empire, Islam dealt with the polytheism of the areas where it is the dominant religion today.
JESUS wasn't real that's why 😊
