  • Dan Simons explores why we see the world as it ISN'T.
    Daniel Simons is head of the Visual Cognition Laboratory at the University of Illinois. His research explores the ways in which our beliefs and intuitions about the workings of our own minds are often mistaken and why that matters. He is best known for his experiments revealing striking failures of perception and the limits of visual awareness. His research is exhibited in science museums worldwide and his writing has been published in many newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Chicago Tribune. He recently co-authored the book, "The Invisible Gorilla, and Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us" (Crown, 2010).

    This talk was recorded at TEDxUIUC 2011 (02/19/11), which was organized at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by a group of students led by Cristian Mitreanu.

    About TEDx, x = independently organized event
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    This knowledge is vital, I think, to instilling tolerance, acceptance, empathy and understanding of people, particularly of different worldviews or maybe even different political orientations. Having the sense that people literally SEE the world differently to you because of their underlying beliefs, knowledge and experiences, shaped by their own entire lifetime, and the humility to say that maybe your own view isn't as concrete as you know it to be. It's merely YOUR perception of the world.

    A great way to push yourself is to take new perspectives or think about it differently. When we do this, we do not see the world as we normally perceive it but instead more like another's perception. In this way, we see the world more objectively.

    Nearly, or all of us don’t actually see the world as it really is. The lens is humanity, which is why we all see, and understand this lecture, in nearly the same way. It kinda sounds like we all see things, nearly the same ways, which is useful.

    I find it interesting.
    I will grant some of the sour voices below that if you think about it, and have the average amount of grey matter upstairs, it is not really that difficult.
    YET.... how many times in your life do you not come across this.... and how many times have you not found yourself in an argument where the core-issue is simply that... different perspective on the exact same topic or situation (with a failure of being able to see this from the different perspective)
    This is a simple, yet effective message that all managers should know.... YET.... how many managers have you seen in your life who clearly do not know, and understand?
    simple, clear, effective.... like!

    Mahir, I do believe you're stuck in an illusion just as Dan said :p not everyone has known this. I also feel this pertains to many ideas in quantum physics and to the coming age where science and spirituality will merge. Understanding how all individuals view the world differently will help us understand how the world REALLY works.

    • @virvisquevir3320
      @virvisquevir3320 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      GuerillaXV - We never get to "REALLY", we only get to "our best guess at the moment given the information available". The test is pragmatic. What perceptions are sustainable? What perceptions - and the ensuing actions- survive natural selection? Perceptions are subject to Darwinian evolution just as much as species are. It's not about getting it 100% right, it's about getting it good enough not to be eliminated. We never get knowledge that is final, eternal, complete. Even scientific models change and get replaced in paradigm shifts. Everything is provisional. Everything except the eternal LOGOS. Whatever works. Whatever doesn't kill you. Or your descendants. Conquer the challenges to stay alive.

    Well, at least you didn't do what a lot of others did. They "extrapolate" from a few illusions, that reality itself is an illusion, instead of just some perceptions of reality.

      It was hard to believe but try this: make a circle with your fingers on each hand (or cut out 2 circles in a piece of paper) just big enough to cover a single chess piece. By doing this you've eliminated the influence of the background. Now compare the same upper and lower chess pieces.

    Nice demos, bad conclusions. The debate realism/idealism was nicely resolved by Gibson: Direct realism, aka ecological realism, emphasises that we are not perceivers, we are perceiver-actors. From this pragmatic perspective, of course we see the same "things" (Gibson's "affordances" or perceivable opportunities for action). If we didn't we could never communicate or agree! And survival...and evolution...would not work. Your "argument from illusion" is tried and tested. But it's deeply flawed.

  • @Harveyism11
    @Harveyism11 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is strictly correct and generally totally wrong. Meaningfully incorrect perceptions of the world are actually the exception to the rule, given all the moments that you have in your lifetime. Even when we see something differently from someone else, increasing things like context and resolution most often allows for remarkably - even shockingly - SIMILAR perceptions of the world between two people. Why did absolutely no one in the auditorium wonder what "bee" meant, or mistake the image for an actual bee, or even mistake that auditorium (for more than two seconds while poking their head in the door) for a different but otherwise very similar auditorium that they were supposed to be in? Things are real and we perceive them, that's why. It's a cute but ultimately foolish approach to the world to assume that what you perceive is just as likely to be real as not real. This is a product from the minds of bored, pampered people, and absolutely no one acts this way with things that matter to them.
