The previous owner had replaced the head gaskets after overheating, but the damage was done the connecting rod bearings had already been swimming in oil filled with coolant so I forget which cylinder, but yes it was rod bearings. The engine ended up being recycled, and I bought a used JDM EJ255 off of e b a y and installed that instead, it was cheaper, and easier than a rebuild.
So I worked for LKQ in Bellingham,WA remanufacturing and trouble shooting engines for about a year and well.. we used to sit at lunch and laugh at videos like this because we used to be the very few who knew what that noise was.. Piston slap.. the cylinder wall becomes lopsided or deformed causing the piston to go in and out of tolerance as it strokes.. and the piston is pivoting on the buttons holding the wrist pin in making it possible.. I could be wrong though

Connecting rod bearing failure....same thing happened in my EJ25D, albeit at 177,000 miles
Did you ever figure this out? My 2001 Outback is doing this now
easy, spun rod bearing
Piston slap. Sub 2000 EJ25s will slap when they're cold sometimes, this is probably that... but worse.
Timing chain an belt tensioner
Possibly your timing belt pulleys or water pump bearing failing.
yeah Piston slap......if that nasty Sound will be Piston slap,i think it only runs with the rod cause the Piston is missing XD
did you replaced your engine yet. was it cylinder 2 rod bearing?
Engine is destroyed.. prob lack of oil or pushed to hard.. yikes 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
crank bearing terrible sound!
