The researcher in the video suggests that the average dog only knows about 10 words. I think that number is too low and think most dog owners would agree.
+Denise Hansen Absolutely. I'm certain my Alfie knows many things we say in general conversation, including names for people, places, actions, objects and emotions. He couldn't understand an in-depth discussion on philosophy, but nor would many humans.
Well it IS just an average, my border collie (profile pic) knows a lot more than ten words, mostly without being taught but just by us saying them enough he could connect the word to the action or item etc. My Labrador is also quite clever although he doesn't connect the dots on his own as much as the collie. On the other hand, think about how many dogs are terribly "trained" and struggle to respond to their own name. I'd say 1 in 10 dogs I see going around are actually trained to a suitable standard.
Might have meant.. The average dog is taught only 10 words? That might be average.. Sit, Stay, Outside, Come, Eat the Cat, Stop, etc etc.. But they definitely can identify more, probably 30 easily.
Awesome! The dog of my family always knows when we are talking about the mess he does sometimes, and then he puts that look in his eyes. How can't you love him?
Chaser was another BC who knew a great many names of her toys. She's passed on as had her master, but Neil Tysson de Grasse-the physicist-interviewed them and confirmed that she was one heck of a smart BC. Stanley Coren, the late dog expert stated that BCs are the smartest dogs.. So is your BC and no doubt mine too.
Well i think the last test was just done by smell - not logic. But Collies are amazing and wonderful companions. I wish I had one, but live in an upstairs flat.
He was able to realize that all of the other toys were not named that, so the only toy that must be called Chris should be the one he doesn’t know. That’s amazing.
my dog pookie would know all the names of his toys like this dog. Sadly he passed away a couple months ago. It was always such a joy playing with him. He'd always surprise me with the amount of words he'd understand. I miss him with all my heart.
My Gem was an Aussie/BC mix. Like the Empath on the "TOS" episode 'The Empath', she was very empathic in that she could sense your moods or whether you were sick or not and either cheer you up or stay with you. She used to cheer up my little niece when she was sad or angry. My niece is now 38 and still remembers Gem. She has her own dog now, a Blue Heeler. I told her it was too bad she didn't teach Lily to do tricks like Skidboot. My next dog was a pure BC. She refused to respond to the name I gave her-T'Ami, a Vulcan female name-so I named her Tess Siobhan and she let me know she preferred that name instead. She not only let me know that I was Diabetic-I believe she could smell the different scents-but taught my next puppy, a r/w BC named Gypsy Rose Lee, how to do so too. One of Tess's sons, Max(well Smart) became a service dog for a little girl with CP. He let her know when she was going to have a seizure as well.
There was a book written by a British scientist who taught his border collie 1000 words, I think. Unfortunately I lend the book so i can't find his name. Dogs know more than 10 words. My dogs know the time, can read my mind, and have me fully trained to meet their every need.
-Dog proceed to run into the street -Dog walks to bus station -Dog force himself onto bus right before being noticed -Dog stops near Airport -Dog sneaks into carry on luggage -Stupid hooman never notices -Dog burst out at destination -Dog travel to Gabe's house -Dog ties down Gabe and put out a freshly burnt cigarette on his face -Gabe gets the message -Valve announce the release of Half Life 3 and every other game that stopped at 2nd iteration -Owner weeps for missing dog -Dog shows up like everything is normal
My BC does the same with his toys; I always teach him the name when I buy it......but I forget them, so I've had to write the names on to remember the name. P.S. I forget the names, because he might have 4 or 5 pigs(I don't mean I forget it's a pig), but I can only remember "percy" etc. No idea how many he's got spread amongst my house, my folks & the beach house.....BC's are awesome. 💚💛
Words my dog knows: 1. My name 2. Sisters name 3. Brothers name 4. Moms name 5. Dads name 6. Boy 7. Girl 8. Kid 9. Dexter (neighbors dog) 10. Jamie (babysitter when we go away) 11. Doggy daycare 12. Home 13. Car 14. Vet 15. Idk if this is one or 5 but he knows 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 16. Walk 17. Outside 18. Go 19. Food 20. Come/come here 21. Sit 22. Stop 23. Stay 24. Wait 25. Mama (we trained him to say the oooooo part in Bohemian Rhapsody after we say mama) 26. Yeet 27. Dance 28. Shake 29. Jump 30. Eat 31. Water 32. Leash 33. Squirrel 34. Dog 35. Person 36. Now 37. Spin 38. Sing 39. Bow 40. And duh his own name That’s 40. If you don’t include family members that’s still 33. So he knows more than average apparently.
This experiment may also proof, that the dog is able to do more than learn names. A name is not more than a placeholder for an object. You could also say just "pig" and the dog brings "pig", because he has learned, that he always has to bring $name. But he always would bring $name, because thats training, not understanding. Verbs are far more important, because they stand for an action. To know what a verb means, the dog has to figure out the motive and wish of the speaker. That the dog can bring a new object means, that he might understand the concept of "bring" better than a 3 yo, because he knows he has to pick up the correct object, and he also understands, that there can be a new object, therefor he has figured out that the motive behind "bring" means an action and a need/wish ("look at this place and pick up $name") and thats why he is able to bring a new object, because he knows "bring" is the important issue. If the dog only would understand the names without the concept of "bring", he would be confused by a new word and try to bring something as he learned to do. They should teach him a few more commands like "hide" or "switch" and repeat this experiment to find out if he understands verbs. There is also a dog who can speak using buttons and this dog understands and uses adjectives, an even more abstract construct of speach than verbs.
Their name(s), sit, stay, come, lay down, walk, fetch, treat, dinnertime, stand, point, jump, dance, shake, speak, hugs/cuddles, no/out, bed... Were my dogs just smart, or is it also the time and effort invested?
How does have to do with how dogs are better than cats? They explicitly stated that only 5 or so dogs know this amount of words that’s a tiny portion and I’m sure there’s some cats capable of understanding speech too.
The key difference is wheras a 2 year old human may know around 150 words, the human will be able to see a picture of that object and recognise it. The dog doesnt know wheat a pineapple is, just which toy is called "pineapple"
the question is, how abstract his idea of the words is. they should do test, where they change let's say 10 of his toys by other toys representing the same thing - e.g. another pig-toy, that looks different than his own, but still like a pig.
That sass when he took the toy back from her and pointedly placed it back in the basket. "It goes in here silly human."
Totally love things like this.
anyone else half expecting for him to start talking?
me XD
Yeeeah 😂😂😂
With his canine why not 🤣
Damn, meanwhile my dog still can't grasp the concept of "you cannot walk through the glass door or jump through the glass windows"
lol
Border Collies are amazing dogs. They are so intelligent.
A Senior Executive I once worked with said border collies are the smartest dogs.
I love how in the end he was like "bitch give me back chris packham so I can put him where he belongs"
I wonder how often humans appear silly, even clueless, to animals.
When i saw the title of the video i thought he could pronounce those 150 words. Silly me xD
same xD
same hahhaa
Я русский! А ты?
Kreis Makkein Я из Сербии :)
Ovde Blizu same lol
I have a border collie and I'm kind of happy she can't talk. She's much wiser than me, and that would make her the boss.
The researcher in the video suggests that the average dog only knows about 10 words. I think that number is too low and think most dog owners would agree.

@@BrassAxe eat the cat, lol
Look up ‘Stella the talking dog’ she can actually speak, she said ‘Jake come want’ and when he came she said ‘happy’
No, i've been subsribed to them for a while and she can only use buttons.
Awesome! The dog of my family always knows when we are talking about the mess he does sometimes, and then he puts that look in his eyes. How can't you love him?
If you are lazy, don't get a Collie.
or a temperamental, neurotic, but lovable Diva Husky
You better be smarter than a BC! They are more clever than most humans I've met!
My dog does the same thing, i always tell him “Where’s Santa? Go get Santa,” and he runs to get his Santa toy
Itslaurenbloss so cute
Just proves that animals are much smarter than many humans.

they should teach it to get them water bottles for when they can to move lol

Amazing, what a clever and beautiful dog 👍🏻💕
That's so cute! :)
don't let them treat you like a slave, Gable! Revolt!
There is a border collie that know 1000.
She's called Chaser and she's owned by Dr. John Pilley.
Yes, Chaser has 3,000 toys, and she knows all their names.
You said what you gonna do in front of him he literally looked at you like “yo I can see & hear you bro”
Talk about a good boy!
Thought it was going to be a talking dog but this is very impressive nonetheless.
I feel like his assessment of most dogs only know 10 words is ridiculously wrong
When she said Henrietta, I thought he was gunna grab the *random knife* that’s there
Mr pickles in his first Century of living
Now tell your dog to get Half Life 3
-Dog proceed to run into the street
-Dog walks to bus station
-Dog force himself onto bus right before being noticed
-Dog stops near Airport
-Dog sneaks into carry on luggage
-Stupid hooman never notices
-Dog burst out at destination
-Dog travel to Gabe's house
-Dog ties down Gabe and put out a freshly burnt cigarette on his face
-Gabe gets the message
-Valve announce the release of Half Life 3 and every other game that stopped at 2nd iteration

my dog knows all her toy names, I need to train her to do this more
I remember Chaser. The dog who knows 1,022 words.
I think my dog is broken. 😂
Amazing!!!
Now the next study will be to differentiate IQ's between breeds. Hey that could be a new reality show, "My Dumb Doggie"...:P
He understands it better than Siri ♥️
I have an Aussie shepherd and he knows the names of his toys
Why am I so surprised if I already knew dogs could understand sit, stay, etc.
Dogs are smarter than we think :3
Human ego will never fail to amaze me

My dog can literally buy me a bag of chips from the grocery store.
*_Beat that gabe_*
My dog is 13 years old and understands Spanish and English. I’m thinking of training her now!
My family dog***
Chaser has 3,000 toys, and she knows all their names. Chaser is a border collie owned by Dr John Pilley.

You are telling me that i can teach my dog to fetch beer for me?

Nova Science already did this exact thing...
You better keep an eye on this dog, because the Chinese Red Army will try to clone him and try to turn those cloned dogs into super soldiers.
That's only if he doesn't end up in a stir fry
+Cameron Chambers xD
+Cameron Chambers loool
If they don't eat them first. Border Collie tasty since dog.
Dog applies Pigeonhole Principle better than many humans.
Their name(s), sit, stay, come, lay down, walk, fetch, treat, dinnertime, stand, point, jump, dance, shake, speak, hugs/cuddles, no/out, bed...
Were my dogs just smart, or is it also the time and effort invested?

so a dog is smarter than me
He is afraid after picking the toy.. and gets no "treat" 🤔
Hey you're right 🤔
He is a border collie. Not afraid but made to move quickly if needed to.
Is that a knife squeaky toy?
waooo love dis dog💖💖💖💖🌈🐶
The key difference is wheras a 2 year old human may know around 150 words, the human will be able to see a picture of that object and recognise it. The dog doesnt know wheat a pineapple is, just which toy is called "pineapple"
whats more intellectually stimulating about a BC is their manipulation tactics.
Cats or dogs? Rabbits!
the question is, how abstract his idea of the words is. they should do test, where they change let's say 10 of his toys by other toys representing the same thing - e.g. another pig-toy, that looks different than his own, but still like a pig.
I mean you could throw a dead pig at your dog whilst shouting pig 50 times and it’ll have a similar effect
For anyone interested~ check out Chaser the dog :-)
Dogs can usually only recognise words with one or two syllables... And Gable's over here like "hEnRIeTtA"
Dogmeat!!
What the actual fuck.
+Indigo Osmanthus It's the name of a dog in a game called Fallout 4. Chill, it's all good!

It's unfair because there doing everything that dog our trained to do not cats
