  • This old Logan Model 1922 11x36" lathe has sat for years and needed a little TLC. Turned out better than expected! These old lathes are pretty good machines, had roller bearings and very capable of machining good parts. One of my first lathes was similar to this machine and I learned a lot on it.

Any vid that works on a old lathe gets a thumbs up from me.
That looks a lot like my south bend 10.

I thought I was the only guy chasing a bench grinder around a work bench, lol. I restore old machinery myself, new sub.

Actually looked in pretty good shape -- gears had their teeth (unlike my Logan back is 1986) sound good. Good job.

Wow, that was one very crusty machine tool. Cleaned up nice, and looks to be in really good shape. Good job, Brett!

I have a Logan lathe. @5:21 you installed the motor drive assembly. There should be a "peg leg" that installs underneath it which removes the load from the motor drive casting. Curious as to if it is missing or if you installed it later? Some Logan owners have replaced the peg leg with a brace that goes from under the motor over to the legs under the gear case.

Yeah, it doesn't have the cast iron peg leg. It has a 1/2" or 3/4" rod supporting it going to the floor.

Do you find your Logan lathe adequate for precise metalsmithing? How tight of tolerances will it hold? Half a tenth??

This one I think held 1 thou over about 8 inches. Pretty good for an old lathe, but there wasn't a ton of wear on it ether.
