I can tell this story now because he has passed away. My brother-in-law had a septic pumping business in central Michigan and a local restaurant refused to pay him for pumping 2000 gallons of waste from his septic tank. My brother-in-law returned late one night with a glass cutter, cut a hole in one of the restaurant windows and returned the 2000 gallons of sewage. It shut down the restaurant for nine months, I'm surprised it ever reopened after that.

Years ago a major construction company won the contract to resurface sections of the Norwich Bypass (A11).
They subcontracted some sections out to various smaller companies and the work was finished on time and to a good standard. The local council paid the major company but they in turn chose not to pay all their subcontractors, taking the, "we're bigger than you and it will cost you thousands to sue us" attitude.
So, one Sunday morning , one of the contractors drove a bulldozer to the section he had laid and recovered all his tarmac, making the road completely impassable prior to the Monday morning rush to work.
He got his money and the major company was not allowed to bid for any council contracts until all the subcontractors had been paid and their future contracts included cast iron clauses concerning payments to subcontractors.

My brother in law built a beautiful backyard deck for a Physician in Northern California- the man refused to pay him even though he was more than pleased with the outcome. So he and his one employee took two chain saws and destroyed it all. He lost his contractors license- and he moved on in life. 👍🏻

I once took over as a head of department for a very well known UK company. One of the first meetings I had (in 1994) was with an intruder alarm provider, a small family firm. He presented me with an invoice for written of charges of over £10k and said he needed to do it as he needed it for the HMRC….I later went to the finance director and discovered the works had been done and my predecessor had signed off on the works but hadn’t paid because of profit and loss accounts……I thought this was immoral and argued that we should pay them if we’d had the work done and it was acceptable. They didn’t pay. A year or so later the small business folded and were absorbed by a national firm…….this has always left a bad taste in my mouth.

@@scottsolinko1.... Wrong! Ultimately, Travel Lodge can sue the contractor for the damage the sub did as the contractor failed in his obligation by not paying the sub. I expect the sub contacted TL (but IDK) and TL passed the buck to the deadbeat contractor leaving the sub out the money. Best way to get attention was to do as the sub did. I'm sure he had gotten the run around over and over and just got fed up. Good for him....regardless.....good for him. A warning to deadbeats and cheats.

    • @Rikkcas
      @Rikkcas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

An owner is usually required to get a signed document when they pay a general contractor, stating the GC has paid their subs and materials suppliers. That’s not unusual for large commercial projects with a corporation as big as travelodge. It’s a protection against stuff like this. The general also commonly takes out a construction loan and has similar requirements for progress payments... especially a final payment.
A copy of the check is sometimes required as well. Some one dropped the ball here.
I don’t blame the loader guy at all for getting pissed off. You’d be mad too if you didn’t get your paycheck of multiple $thousands.
No one is going to win here. Expect out of pocket money from all parties. Subs are not slaves. They’re in business too, with payrolls and responsibilities. Who knows what actually happened here in the course of work. But I’ll bet that loader guy felt pretty good after going off like that. He got his money’s worth-for sure!😆
      What a crazy world ~🙃

I was a self employed roof tiler, and always did a first class job, that is one reason I went out of business because I just couldn’t hold my hand out for the money unless I knew in my heart everything was perfect. Secondly and the main reason I went out of business was building contractors never wanted to pay on time. Sometimes I have waited 3 months to get paid for a completed and passed job, and the problem then goes on to your next job, because your material suppler wants paying at the end of the month and if you can’t pay them, you don’t get no more credit for materials so you can take on the next job, and this all stems from not being paid on time by the guy who has got his roof on, all done no problems. Cause now you see in my case once the roof went on it didn’t matter if it rained or snowed, the builder could carry on working inside with all the other contractors, cause everything is going to be dry now. I mean you wouldn’t see a builder putting up ceilings or installing electrical work, or laying floors. Nothing gets done until that roof is on and then they have you over by not paying you, and legally all the roof belongs to him now, so if you went up there and started chucking tiles off you would be the one in the shit. So I went bust, had a breakdown, lost everything I had. Now I am too old to start again, and not only that unless you are European no bank is going to lend you any money if you are white and British born and bred. That’s the way it is now and it is only going to get worse. Britain’s government employed a french company called Atos to asses us over a desk in a 15 minute consultation to say if I was fit to work because I know have physical and mental illnesses, I don’t know who the government are employing now to do there assessing, but I do know this, it is the same company who employ’s the same people who knock on your door and harass you wanting to enter your property illegally to see if you have a tv license or not, by the way you don’t have to let them in, just shut the door in their faces there is absolutely nothing they can do to you. I think the company doing these jobs now are called capita. Sorry I have gone on for longer than intended but I am getting very close to my wits end, I am truly on the verge of saying bye to this once lovely world. I have my own business and I sympathize with the man. I dont know what his story is but I've had a few bigger companies than mine who just say "we wont pay you" or they just ignore you all together because they know that you dont have the time or money to take them to court. Even if they have signed a contract. Wether you are happy with the job or not doesnt matter, someone spend time doing something for you and you have to compensate them for that time. Would you walk into macdonalds, order a burger, eat half of it and walk out without paying because you didnt "like" it?

@@BillClinton228 I think a builder should be like this window place we had in Missouri some time back, in the contract said if you didn't pay them the window place could take your home.
I was in small claims court years back this family had their windows replaced throughtheir home, then they went bankrupt (I would say not to pay) the window place got the property because it wasn't a payment it was them giving them their house. Sad part was it was the son-in-law talking his wife's father to put the windows in.

@Jacques Bloques sued for what? A freaking banking glitch. The dude was already paid by the time he did this. Wasn't travel lodges fault, they paid the contractor, wasn't even the contractors fault, he ordered out the checks. The only person to blame was the bank. But let's not crash the banks door, or the construction companies trailer, let's get three fucking steps removed from the cause and call that good.

It must be a UK thing. I've worked as a contractor for a hotel for over a year now. Never had a late payment. Only issue I ever had was once when they told me to come pickup my check (a mile from my house) and when I got there they said "it is in the mail." They legitimately mailed it, so I got it probably 3 days later, cause our post office sucks balls.

I worked for Travelodge as a maintenance engineer a few years ago. The place is filthy when you look at the interior closely. The management were cold hearted. It is a very corporate company only interested in maximizing profit.
I have have not been paid by contractors before and there are some very dubious characters in the building industry who shit on people all the time. I can understand this guys reaction but in the end he will end up in worst shit by the police so it is not worth doing stuff like this. Better to be careful about who you work for in the first place, always make sure you get paid weekly and on time, always walk away from a company who have a history of shitting on their employees or sub contractors.
