I come back to this every once in a while. Hard to believe its been 12 years. I love the nostalgia of remembering when I first saw this and baseball cards were one of the only things I was thinking about in life
Damn, nearly 8 years since I probably first watched this. I don't know why, but there's something about this video, that always makes me come back. I have probably watched this at least 20 times, and I have never even watched a baseball game or opened any baseball cards. Its still so incredible, what a lovely shop. So sorry to hear it has closed down.
Holy shit I want this to be longer! This is such a cool mini doc. With hobby shops feeling more and more like a thing of the past, it's nice to get a look into the comradery of card collecting. Well done, man!
I use to buy comics and baseball cards for years from joe when he was a t his fathers store on Hoyt st. I wish the dugout was still open Joe is really a good guy. Even if he hadn't seen me in years as soon as I'd walk in his shop he'd remember my face. Just a neighborhood guy doin what he loved. Thanks for all the cool memories and collectibles Joe.
Haven’t seen this video in 13 years. Just started back up collecting baseball cards again and remembered this video out of the blue. Took me an hour to find it on TH-cam. I used to watch this 2 times a day for a good year when I was a kid. So much nostalgia it’s unbelievable.
what ever happened to Joe? One of my favorite New York moments ... I happened across this store, ended up spending the entire day and night with Joe and his friends. What a kind and great man.
I have watched this video many times over the years. I am now a senior in college, but enjoyed collecting baseball cards in the early-mid 2000's. I still have my binder's under the bed back home. Once or twice a year I still pick up a pack just for the nostalgic factor. This video makes me want to do it more consistently!!
Awesome video, hopefully opens some eyes to those who don’t know of the Beauty of collecting these cards. I’m from England... there’s no hobby shops or anything of that kind around me (really wish there was) I mainly buy from online.. I’m 17 and collected since I was as young as 5.. I love football cards (soccer). Don’t know what id do without them! My best card is a Joe hart signed out of 250 from 2012 euros match attax collection, if u was lucky enough u would find the signed card in a starter pack in uk shops for like £5.. so incredibly rare to get and I was shouting in the car when I opened the binder to see him sitting there in one of the sleeves haha.. I was pretty young but understood the value and how special it was.. best moment of my life... currently saving up to maybe get a soccer panini prizm or obsidian box or even an impeccable box when it comes out! Will never stop collecting, it shall always be my hobby till the day I die :)
Even if you don't have the money to buy a high end box, there is still that rush of excitement that you get when you open a pack of baseball cards. This is a close knit community and one thing we all have in common is the feeling of getting a great card. I hope baseball cards continue to entertain people for generations to come.
Love this video. This is one of those rare things that simply just makes you feel better during and after you watch it. i don't know why, it just does. i absolutely love this hobby! Just wish i had a shop like this one in my home town. whoever did this.....fantastic job! thank you.
Ive watched this video like 25 times the last year or so I love it !! The guy who owns the store is so good to his customers. Very well produced video and camera work as well.
I miss all the old card shops from the 80s & 90s!!! My dad had a card shop & it had me hooked on collecting... But in 95 i quit collecting & last yr i started back... Sad that all my cards aren't as much anymore... Thesenew cards & prices are CRAZY but its def worth it!!! Love this DOC also... My towns card shops closed down yrs ago, i miss that feeling of hanging out at a card shop & opening up packs, wheelin & dealin baby lol thats how i learned 2 HUSTLE!!!
CONGRATS!!!! I love your video. I know Joe since I started buying from him in 1992 or 1993 at the store he had on Smith Street and kept buying until he closed. He was always a great guy and know so much. Always caring for all customers. Too bad he close his store.
I love watching this in 2021 this is why I love card collecting and New Yorkers are a different breed of people and how can’t you like rookies haha I love rookies personally
this was great. I'm thinking about getting back into collecting after taking a look at some of my old cards from the 80's that I've had in storage since then. I was so stoked when I saw names like Curt Schilling, Rickey Henderson, Roger Clemens, and Cal Ripken in my collection when these guys were not great yet. I'll be sure to visit your shop next time I'm in Brooklyn. As a Dodger fan from LA I would love to visit where the team came from.
You really did do a good job. I'm in the South. Our culture is so different here and you did a good job capturing a bit of the Yankee culture which us Southerners appreciated and respect because you guys up there are true sports fans to the core.
the packaging always gets me. if i walk thru a store and i walk past the trading card isle im like "im not buying any of these" but then i see those box sets and they look so cool so i end up buying some upper deck football cards. but i dont spend nearly as much money as these guys.
I've been collecting for 8 years now and I got a pretty decent collection of cards from 1979 to present day, not to mention a 2010 Topps #661 Stephen Strasburg rookie and a 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout rookie.
Extremely elegant, thoughtful, informative short film about the most popular hobby in the world. I recommend that anyone who is a card collector or thinking about collecting baseball cards should watch it and Im glad I came across it here at TH-cam. Its also a great slice of NYC. Great job.
I know this is old....i realize it....but somehow, once a year, i find it floating in my recommended vids....and i watch it... and i have the exact same thought....everytime. This card shop would make the perfect setting for a "Clerks" style baseball movie.... anyone unfamiliar with Clerks... its a Kevin Smith comedy...aka Jay and Silent Bob !!!!!! anyway, still an awesome video many years a views later !!!
I remember walking into Joe's shop watching a lot of these guys open up packs of cards The Verizon guy I think his name was Jeff would be in there almost every week. For me it was Comics and Joe had tons of them. The store has been closed for 5 years he just decided it was time to close up shop I still see him every now and then at a comic con. But its not the same as walking in to his shop hearing him yell across the room about the Yankees RIP Joe's Dugout 1986 - 2010. PS: I never got to pick up the last of my comics he held for me enjoy retirement Joe and keep on Rocking!
Stayplaytion Game Hunters a brick and mortar can't compete with ebay which has far better prices. also these prices are absurd. 10 bucks for a pack of 6 cards? are they serious? sounds like a lottery system.
wow im so sad to hear his shop closed down. this was my first comic shop i ever went to when i was 12 yrs old ( im 29 now) i use to annoying call his shop weekly /daily to see if the latest spawn comics was out ( early issue # 20's at the time). lol i wonder if he remembers that.. i would love to run into him at a comic con like nycc which i go to every year. his shop is the reason im such a huge comic collector 17 years later..
+DannyToons Good For You,, Collect what you Like and can Afford. Collecting Sports Card has always been for the Fun of It and was never meant to be " FOR PROFIT " If you try to Collect for Profit you will Lose both ways. Sets you don't like and cards that drop in value and end up being worth Nothing. Happy Collecting and have fun
+DannyToons im also a young "collector" and i have the complete 87 and 91 sets so what u gotta do is bid for like 3000 cards for $20g or so on ebay and then ur gonna definetly find some great ones also get ur parents to like see if their friends have cards from their child hood that they dont want and then u gotaa keep those. thats how i got UNOPEDED 87 and 91 sets i found a pete rose w/ his full carrerr on it and tommy john w/ a bunch of yrs on it GOOD LUCK
Just for you young Kids.. You don't need to spend thousands of Dollars on these Packs of cards just to get Relics and Cut Signatures. Collect the Older cards and Packs.. That is were the Real Money will be when you get older.. Sets from the 70's and 80's when i was young were cheap. Now look at those Prices .. Very High.. Sure they over produced the sets and cards of the mid to late 80's but you do not to realize that there will be more and more collectors in the future and that product will shrink and then there will not be much around.. Have to look at the big picture and not the short term.. Have fun and collect what make you happy. Also if you are going to make sets,, try to get the best cards you can.. Centering , Corners, Color and Card Stock Quality.. Don't just put a set together.. Do it while the Cards are cheap..
Easyrider Pappy Never ever view collecting sports cards as an investment. It's not worth the time or the money. It's foolish to think that you're ever going to make a big profit. View it as a pure hobby; otherwise, you're going to be very disappointed in the long run. I keep hearing die-hard collectors who can't let go saying that the hobby will make a comeback, but it won't. People aren't nostalgic about baseball like they used to be in the '80s and '90s, when there were all kinds of documentaries being made about old baseball stars and teams and tons of baseball movies being made, but those days are gone, and they're _not_ coming back.
Just surfing the net and who do I see. For the first time in 20 years I see Joe. Hey Joe remember the good old days at the Golden Gate Inn run by Harry and then Mark who had a store on Kings Hyway. Your looking real good. Stay well Mel

What they were talking about around 6:15 or so about cards being so expensive now and kids can't afford them is true. I'm 15 and have been collecting since I was 8, but not like the wal-mart crap type of stuff. I have an eBay store and sell 20 box cases of 1980's, and buy 50's - 60's. I have a completed 1955 Topps set and 1959 set. Working on 1957. But, I'm afraid that there will be no one to sell to/buy from in future because most kids aren't as into cards as most adults and I are.
I think it is cardboard crack. I love my collection of cards. I will never make my money back either and I seldom trade. I am sure my wife would freak if she knew how many cards we own. I love the artwork and designs on the cards. Safe and harmless hobby that you never grown out of.
Damn great vid! Owner looks like a top notch guy and the place looks like a great place to chill all day! I'll have to check this out if I ever go to NY, wish my shops were like this.
I know I'm late commenting on your vids but I like them s lot. You seem like a fun and great guys. Maybe one day I can visit your shop. I'm a 32+ year collector. Keep it the great vids.

💯
Couldn’t have said it any better. This is exactly how I feel
Was literally coming back here to post the same thing. Nice please never take this video down.
Same. I used to watch a guy open packs with for hi kid on TH-cam, it was heartwarming to watch. Then he suddenly removed his channel. Oh well
This is my favorite TH-cam video of all time.
that makes me happy
Mine to bro the first time I watched was years ago lol
"Cardboard Crack" truest thing I've heard all day.
Back again to this video. Watched it when I was 10, 20. The joy of this pure collectors video never goes away. Hold on to feelings like this
You know what I like about this video? They like the cards. They enjoy the hobby. I hope he’s still in the game.

We back!
I remember watching this year's ago when I was a kid and now I'm 20, time flies but the fun of it never goes away.
Holy shit I want this to be longer! This is such a cool mini doc. With hobby shops feeling more and more like a thing of the past, it's nice to get a look into the comradery of card collecting. Well done, man!
Commraderie is definitely a good word to describe the hobby.
i miss the late 80s early 90s. arcades card shops and video stores was my life, now they are all long gone. it was so fun an exciting.
I use to buy comics and baseball cards for years from joe when he was a t his fathers store on Hoyt st. I wish the dugout was still open Joe is really a good guy. Watched this over 30 times for sure

I love this nostalgia trip. Long gone are the days of $75 hobby boxes 😂
This was a beautiful short movie. I loved every second of it. The kindness of these people radiate from the screen.
Great video for anyone thinking about getting into the hobby
Baseball cards are the best, and most exciting hobby there will ever be!
the packaging always gets me.

Nick Ahles That Trout is worth $500 now. You still got it?
Best baseball card documentary out here
The prices compared to today crazy!

You could make this movie feature length and win an Oscar. The BEST TH-cam video I've seen that never made me laugh. 5 STARS
I had no idea. That is awesome and what a great shop. Love the interactions with owner and customer.
I have watched this once and I might watch it again tomorrow! I love seeing people talking about baseball cards!

I used to love getting baseball cards when I was a kid. It's only been like 9 years but it seems so long ago.
Awesome baseball cards, looks like a great store.
thank you very much. Joe Rock - the store's owner - is a legend. It was fun interviewing him and he was a really welcoming subject. glad you dig it.
man I was into cards when i was 8-10 this brings back A LOT of memories.
Great hobby just getting back into it after years of being away.....man has it changed ....I think for the better I hope it stays alive forever.
Wow, i realy enjoyed this piece of Americana.
Please make more films about the great people of New York.
Just surfing the net and who do I see. For the first time in 20 years I see Joe. Hey Joe remember the good old days at the Golden Gate Inn run by Harry and then Mark who had a store on Kings Hyway. Your looking real good. Stay well Mel
He called joey votto being god like before it happened
I used to collect baseball cards when I was a kid. The 1994 strike happened and card prices dropped and so did my love of baseball cards. I still have a bunch of them somewhere.
I'm 13 and I have collected cards since I was 6. I've got over 3,000 cards, I still am into baseball cards. I'm not "out" like they said.
I missed joes store to he all ways had my comics ready when I went their and would always put good stuff on the side for me.
1971 was a tough year lol. Very rough and tumble cards.
In 1992 card stores and card shows were everywhere. And people were chasing the shaq rookie cards.
MAN this is an awesome video!!! sad to see parts of our history go away!!! parts of our hearts are gone it is sad to seethe card shops disapearing!!!
i hope he opens up again

Great little movie - so American! I love the accents. It's a little slice of New York right there.

Opening baseball card packs is so fun. Wow, “it’s not for kids anymore”.
