I used a large tote and sawdust for storing my sweet potatoes. They lasted almost a year, even in the heat.
My dad always filled the wheelbarrow with sand and layered in the carrots. He kept the wheelbarrow in the shed. We lived In the Columbia Gorge area of Oregon and it gets really cold with long freezes and ice. Carrots lasted well into spring.
I love this dog. He is waiting for something to eat. Always.
Our lowes and home depot do not carry the Gamma lids but the ones you have are what I have and I love those lids with the exception of getting them on the bucket. That is where my hubby jumps in and uses his muscles and beats them on for me... Thank you for the great ideas!
Good to know, thank you!!
I sit on them and spin myself around!
Great idea!!! We don't even have a basement, let alone a root celler. But we do have a garage!! We are in New Jersey, a few houses from the ocean. We should get cold enough for trying this!!
Cute little helper.
Your dog is so cute. He/she is trying to help you 😂👍
I'm going to try this next season. I sometimes keep carrots in coolers on my porch but this I think would prolong their life much more.
Great info! Thank you for this idea. I live in arkansas w/o a root cellar so I’m always looking for storage ideas for produce.
Love your little friend helper😊
Potting soil always has fungus gnats and other gross eggs. My recommendation is to try using sand instead
Thank you!
Or sawdust maybe?
This is great! I’ve never tried this. I’ve thought about it with sand, but that would be so heavy!!!!
Subscribed, Lady! You are wonderful. I've been pouting about not having a root cellar. I'm guessing this will work for all "root" type veggies? Sweet potatoes are my favorite.
peat moss is much better. and really good for your garden.\
But really bad for nature.
ooo i wonder if I could do it with shredded newspaper, I'll try it and let you know. My carrots come tomorrow and I happen to have an extra empty bucket
Let me know how it works. Add a little moisture to the newspaper, but not too much.
How did it work with the newspaper? Do you also wrap each one?
The doggie wants to help lol.
He always does. haha
God bless you for making this video! Very helpful!!!!
Great idea! thank you!
How cold does your garage get? We live up North and I’m sure at times my garage can get down to 10 degrees
It is usually between 35-50F in the winter.
Fabulous!
Trying indoors in zone 9. We have an AC. Wish me luck
Good luck - let me know how it goes!
I see this working, the straw/or hay box does not work, I have done them. thanks will try this.
What state are you in and would like to know how they come out.
We are in NC. We ate through all of the potatoes from Jan - March, and are almost through the carrots. So far, the carrots are holding up, but they will need to be put in the fridge soon as our temps warm.
Could you do this in like a larger plastic bin with a lid?
I don’t see why not. As long as the produce isn’t touching each other and the bin is kept in a cool enough environment, I can’t find a reason why it wouldn’t work. Let me know if you try it.
Just giving this a second thought. If you chose a bin with a lid that is not a pest or animal proof, that could alter the outcome significantly.
How do you sterilize a quantity of potting soil like that?
I don’t sterilize.
Do these lids have a name?
They do, they are called Gamma Lids.
Where did you purchase the organic potatoes and carrots?

@@TheHappyHomestead thank you 😊
Azure totally changed how and what I buy. I love them and their products!
What if you get mice in the garage?
Won't matter, because they can't get into the bucket.
