I did a much smaller version of this last winter. Buried an old igloo cooler under my deck and stored a couple dozen potatoes. Covered with a few bags of leaves. They all survived a Michigan winter and were then used for planting this past summer. I did not ventilate or anything. No problems.
Its sounds so odd as I need to put in ground to keep it cooler and you are doing to keep it warmer :) But my'n is for a off grid ice box/refrigerator. I also will need a root seller for potato's..
Do a video on actually building one. I'd like to see how you did the ventilation pipes. Also, what about a garage and doing the same thing except not digging a hole in the ground
I used 2" pvc and used a 2" hole saw to cut out the holes. I put one about 4"above the floor and the other about 2"below the top. I put an elbow on the inside of the pipes going through the wall pointing down. I put a an elbow pointing up on the outside of the pipe going through the wall. The ground really helps insulate the refrigerators. I things seem to store longer in the ground than they would in the garage.
the refrigerator freezer, it has those tubing things in the back and free on in it, did you have those free on removed and those metal tubing's on the back removed or can we just plop it in the ground with the metal tubing still on and the free on still in it? Much appreciated.

Glad it worked for you!
Wow. What a tremendous endeavor.
If they can handle Michigan winters they can handle anything. Happy potato planting! 🥔
Those deer there are in the natural root cellar. Perfect!
On our way to get old freezer! Thank you for sharing.
Living off grid I need something for summer hope to try this Dick Poneneke style . Thank you for showing us your work
Cheers to you and RIP to Dick 🍻 🙏

How did they make it through the winter?
Generally it worked well. Check out the video I did to follow up on this one. Thanks for asking
This year's potatoes came out of the ground in April looking just like they did when I put them in in October.
