- For much of the 19th century, Britain and Russia were embroiled in a covert war, which played out on the vast steppes, deserts and mountains of Central Asia, between the Caucasus in the west and Chinese Turkistan and Tibet in the east. Britain was convinced that the Russian Empire, which was expanding eastwards at a rate of 20,000 square miles each year, had ambitions to seize British India and Russia was equally threatened by Britain’s desire to control much of Central Asia in order to protect its ‘jewel in the crown’; thus the ‘Great Game’, the Bolshaya Igra, began. In this fascinating talk, our regular guest speaker Major JGH Corrigan MBE, retells the fascinating and dangerous story of the players in this secret battle, laden with espionage, torture and execution.

Another very clear lecture so easy to follow and take in.
Seems I've forever been intrigued and found interesting this part of the world. Mostly because little had been taught, but what was I'd always found provocatively fascinating!
Am currently reading Peter Hopkirk's 'The Great Game' for the second time. Was introduced to this back in the mid 1990s by my brother; who then had attended the former 'University of Lenningrad', as an exchange student and was since, an aspiring candidate to for the US Diplomatic Corps. He'd given me this book after a visit to the CIA Museum in Washington, DC. Second to this, I've also gotten Lawrence James's 'Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India'. My aspiration is to get a better understanding of the British 'investment' in India and those countries on it's periphery that they deemed important. Seems that in later years they've had a great concern for the oilfields in the Middle East and protecting the lines of communication to India through what is now Iran, into Afghanistan, for quiet some years. I've not quite finished 'The Great Game' and have heard you mention many of the names, both English, Russian; and then Bokaran, Afghani, and Kivan. Interesting from an historical perspective, but also necessarily 'foundational' for current circumstances in the Geopolitical world!
The follow up book, On Secret Service East Of Constantinople, is well worth a read too. The story of Reginald Teague is a utterly fascinating one, and forms a large part of the book 👍
Britain never "invested" but rather COLONIZED=LOOTED India to the tune of 45 trillion dollars. This "revenue" developed UK, who prior to "discovery" of India, was in very shabby and squalid state. The British dont even have the courtesy to apologise to the progeny of the victims of British "experience".
