Not to mention food, rent, utilities, car note, car insurance, any medical or dental bills, any unforeseen expenses and of course you still have to live your life (shop and travel here and there)...it’s hard out here..
Exactly, Shanarra! I mean basically everything you need to survive while in med school! It’s a necessary evil. The key is to be conscious and conscientious about it. It’s literally an investment into your career and livelihood. The rewards of which aren’t reaped immediately, but will Eventually come. Thanks for watching, also, love your pic!
This is literally what I am struggling with at the moment. The deeper I get into my pre-med journey the more I learn about the cost associated. The only way I could even attend college was to work full time. It's disappointing to because I know if I didn't have to work they way that I did I probably would have a gpa closer to a 3.8-3.9 vs a 3.4- 3.5. All in all I'm still grateful that I am the first in my family to graduate with bachelors but also still trying to pursue medicine even with out the financial support. I'm currently in a career changer post bac and work in a very demanding research position and I'm still facing those same issues and I know if I get in to med school its going to get even worse. I really appreciate this content because I really gives me hope but the transparency also about who I am in the running with.
It might take 4 more years, but there are MD/PhD options that will pay full tuition if you do an extra 4 years with them in research during med school. You'll do your fellowships and residency after that, and it's definitely a longer journey, but at least it would be paid for. And in some cases, it also means you'll make more money.
Man, I really give it up to youtubers like you who take the time to shine light on the financial part of medical school. Just the process of getting into medicalis so hectic that that tends to slip our minds. Thank you for the reminder to take that into consideration when considering a career in medicine. ❤
I always appreciate your input and guidance on how to get into medical school. I’m 2 years from retiring from the Navy and I’M GOING TO MEDICAL SCHOOL when I retire ☺️ Thanks to you, I know more about how to get in and what to expect. Thank you for the motivation.
Good I find this video, I have supporting myself since first year, am in my 4th year now, it really affecting my grades and my student loan only covers for my tuition fee.. The most difficult part is balancing
Dr. Francois, I found your channel a couple of days ago. I’m on a gap year before beginning medical school this fall and my mind has been running a million miles in anticipation of the journey. I appreciate your words of encouragement and guidance. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and insights!
Watching your videos is really inspiring! I’m no where near medical school I’m still working towards my RN and currently active duty !! But I remember watching your video where u talked about your career as a teacher I believe before u became a doctor. And honestly the thought of that really keeps me going! I wish I could have u as a mentor
This is the most scared thoughts of mine even before i start my med school Doctor.Because I'm from a middle class famliy and i dont think that my father can afford that much money😞. So I'm going to start a job in any shops before my med school starts , so i can make some of the money for the fees and all stuffs.... Thank u Dr .I love watching ur videos Dany, from INDIA🇮🇳
Thank you so much for sharing this information and your personal struggles coming from a low income family! As a 4th year med student who also comes from a low-income family, I can relate to some of the difficulties you talked about. I would add an additional layer of difficulty for those of us who come in with pre-existing debt. I started medical school with credit card debt that I amassed trying to do what I felt was right at the time by helping my family during some of our hardest times. Given the $22000-24000 we are expected to live on during this time, I have struggled throughout these 4 years to make it to the next refund check. Additionally, I'm growing increasingly concerned as I'm preparing for residency and learning about the potential of up to 2-3month delay in receiving my first pay check. Most of the anesthesia residency programs are in medium to big cities with sometimes sky high housing prices. Most of my friends are ok because they can ask their parents or SO's for help. I and many of my friends however in no way have the means to support ourselves for 2-3 months without an income. It's frustrating hearing people constantly tell me that it'll all be better once I'm an attending because they fail to acknowledge the difficulties of trying to live now.
This is something we all dont talk about enough. I had 4 friends in med school delete themselves because there weren't enough resources. They were trying to drive for uber , grub hub, or become handypeople doing odd jobs all while trying to study 20/7. It is so hard. Meanwhile, our school is a prestigious private school where we had students simultaneously taking private jets to iceland for fall break. Existence is tough, especially in medicine. Make sure this is what you truly want to do before going into it.
All the expenses, the years gone by studying and not working and the salary difference between what you would get if you started and worked in a company for 8 years and the residency salary totals up to about a million. Not sure if becoming a doctor is worth this.
Depends on the med school and your grades and academic achievements and other stuff. Sometimes, if you're one of the top students, you'll have schools offering paid tuition.
I love the video but I am scared about how I would choose the right Loan because I live in the Caribbean, I am 15, I am really worried. Thanks for the videos though and you now have a new subscriber, me. Do you have any other advice though🥺
ughh thank you so much for talking about this!! I am 3rd year student and had to work on top of all my classes - def a challenge but I know it'll just make me stronger in the end :) step 1 at the end of this month!!! thanks for the motivation :)!
its like i just got out of highschool i am scared i wont be able to attend college ever - like how do i even start to advance , im not extraordinary with amazing creditials for scholarships though i will reach for it - fasfa is not as helpful as i would hope , i work one job and k am learning to save , and credit i havent even started 😭, so i am spook when my goal is to go in as a neurosurgeon for babies , how do i even get there especially when loans are a sure way to debt
Congrats! Unfortunately I do not, bc it was a while ago but I’m sure your financial aid office will have an example specific to your school. The best to you!!
I really wanted to go to vet school, which is very similar to medical school in terms of costs, requirements, and length of time. I worked while in undergrad and knew halfway through that I couldn't justify graduating with a quarter of a million dollars of student loan debt. As it is, I have student loan debt from inflated housing costs a decade ago that makes it more difficult to afford housing now or get ahead. The affordability of higher education needs to be addressed, especially for jobs that are entirely essential to society that require such a high level of education.
In addition to federal loans, I took out private loans offered by my institution at a low interest rate to subsidize my mortgage while in school. Again, that was a necessity for me, but if you don't need it, try to only borrow the minimum.
@@3anesthesiame40 got it thanks much. I’ve save up enough money for my expenses. I’m just asking to make sure I borrow as less as possible. Your amazing. I’m grateful.
You don't have it don't do it. I bust another medical student in his face and quit. He stole my property. There are other things you can do. No moral. It was a turn off.

I say the same thing every time I watch her videos! She’s just stunning 😍 GORGEOUS SKIN!

Disadvantaged background more likely to match out of state and apply to more schools. We need to look into this discrepancy.
So SIs is an Anesthesiologist and a model bc wow 😍

Starting med school in a few weeks. Do you have a sample budget you can show? Thank you

Hi! I was wondering what college did you go to?
I really wanted to go to vet school, which is very similar to medical school in terms of costs, requirements, and length of time. Is there a cut off limit from the loans that’s borrow?
Not really. You just have to only borrow exactly what you need.
@@3anesthesiame40 are private loans required? Or can the federal unsubsidized load and grad plus load should be enough to cover the tuition?
I just need to tuition covered if you can understand what I mean.
In addition to federal loans, I took out private loans offered by my institution at a low interest rate to subsidize my mortgage while in school. Again, that was a necessity for me, but if you don't need it, try to only borrow the minimum.

I wish that there would be student loans in my country, here in Venezuela this doesn't exist at all
So, the process/fees of applying to med school and paying for exams can be put on your student loans?
Yep mostly, although try to pay as,much you can out of pocket.
This is why the field lacks ppl and so much crime is going on around the world because ppl can’t afford to study or pay for the process
What college did you attend?
The City College of New York.
You don't have it don't do it. I bust another medical student in his face and quit. He stole my property. There are other things you can do. No moral. It was a turn off.
