Today we meet up with a good friend John Overstreet to build and fly two giant foamboard F-18 fighter‘s. With different performance mods, which one will come out on top?! Along with our DIY F-18s, we have needed reinforcements to help us fiberglass our monster 20 foot B-17. Our first flight is just around the corner and it’s time to make this plane strong and beautiful. Been with you guys since 2012. Glad to see flitetest still doing revolutionary things 10 years later.
If you integrated the motors with some “fuel tanks” mounted right on the wing spars they wouldn’t be visible in flight AT ALL…just an idea.
I think John did that with the f-15 it was incredibly hidden

The B-17 is not finished yet, it should be ready in time for the Wings over Edgewater event coming up and will be featured there.. it is coming along very nicely..

What if you put both the boom and jet and the EDF in it, I bet you’d be able to get some crazy maneuvers
It's a shame that you didn't have an EDF on hand! Props are cool, but the sound and speed of EDFs are especially cool with a fighter.

Props are budget option for those who cant afford the edf but love the jet

Hi FliteTest, I have a idea for a hole series! Build a actual, real life plane, you could make like 3 seasons with this, one of you would make a pilot's licence and you would build a WW1 style plane, this will cost from 5-15 thousand, but think about the views and subscribers you could get. Thanks for reading this massage
Has John tried a BDF style powerplant on the F-18? If it works, it could be a good third option instead of EDFs or a boom mount. Since you're doing more 3D printed stuff on the channel lately, it might be good to feature the BDF sometime for those who haven't seen it. It's a good fit for jets in this style and more accessible than EDFs.

That EDF version needs a rocket booster for the vertical sprint race.... Point the nose at the sky and pull the trigger!
Does anyone know if there are any design features of the build that allow retractable landing gear to be installed? For me the takeoff roll and the landing are some of the most enjoyable parts of the flight experience.

A good tip for setting fiberglass cloth down is use a light coat of spray adhesive to hold it in place 😎👍

crazy idea: create a plane with a car battery and alternator, using wind to simulate the rotation of tires for the alternator to recharge the car battery. it would be a really big plane but ... if it works, the plane would be able to stay in the air much longer and would be incredible... if it works and is possible.
For the Cobra you guys were trying to do you can successfully pull it off by going just over stall speed and pulling up very sharply.
(I have perfected the technique on those f-18s)
I think you guys should make two planes with airsoft guns and dogfight. Shouldn't be too hard since you have already made the a10 warthog before.

Absolutely love doing fiberglass building and repair. Mostly cause wherever you go it pretty much stays the same

The lads would probably have the same problems as the real aircraft had! Aerodynamic instability and too small control surfaces.

I bet you could make that jet really do some radical maneuvers if you attached a servo to the power boom to make the motors rotate up and down.
Next upgrade, integrate the prop rig into an external stores tank/pod so that it just looks like a tanker or Growler.
If the B-17 so light, you Can Put Tons of Battery in the and make ultimative long range FPV Platform
dude just had an awesome idea you should build the small ships from independence day and have lazer tag with those. Assuming you could build one of those to fly right. lol
It would be interesting to see a FliteTest F-18 (2x70mm) go up against a more conventional F-18, say a freeing 1x90mm, and see how they compared in terms of flight performance.

Can you use 40mm 1u server rack fans as EDFs? I have a few that are two stage. The first is a super sharp 5 blade that has a psudo cone and is 30mm in length. The second stage is a counter rotating 4 blade with a shallower angle that is 25mm in length. They can move some serious air.
I wonder if make a plane cover with fiberglass, rinse plane parts with lacquer thinner and blow dry well, spot inject support foam as needed for 3d strength, make a light fibreglass structure,

Hey guys! Great builds! You were apologetic about the conventional motors mounted on the wings. I have seen F-18s with large pods under the wings. Not sure if these are fuel tanks or something else. What about building a couple of pods and hiding the motors inside. When the prop is spinning you don't even see it. Would be stealthy (pardon the use of that term with this aircraft).

I punched & subscribed & from what I've seen in video is "GREAT!" I like the way all of you think out-side the box to bring an innovative answer to most of your problems. But I do have a question, "How come you didn't use -Romen Candle's!???:" by building a twin 50-cal in place of that "Blunderbuss Pack" twin cannon, Oooh sure it was fun to watch but I really believe that would have looked & filmed spectacularly.
