      What fascinates me is it’s the opposite of a combination engine.. combustion engines have all the working part hidden inside... steam locos have all the working parts o the out side. Like clock works it’s beautiful.

    The U. S. term for this type of wheel is a "blind" driver. Fairly common on 10 coupled locomotives, or six coupled locomotives that operate on very tight curves. Often the blind driver is wider than the other drivers to keep it on top of the rail. This can cause problems with self-guiding frogs.

    • @modelcreationz
      @modelcreationz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always wondered how so many wheels would negotiate a curve with all of them having flanges. Does it also apply to those boogies with 3 axles? 🤔🤔

    • @paulw.woodring7304
      @paulw.woodring7304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@modelcreationz That's what I meant by "six-coupled", meaning a locomotive with six drivers, or three driving axles, ten-coupled meaning a locomotive with 10 drivers under the Whyte classification system, like a 2-10-2.

      On your way I realized that this Loco can not take high speed.
      If we use the blind driver in our country we want to face many problems.

      It's an optical illusion, the white paint around the wheel is not uniform in its circuference causing the wheel to look as if it's wobbling. To get a true sense of the rotational axis look at the axle at the center, the other movements you will then see is the movement of the suspension as the locomotive follows the track, I guarantee that wheel nore any of those wheels are wobbling, if they were it would be short lived.

      NO ... the blind driver (also thus on the UK) is to stop it binding on curves and derailing! Usually applied with 8 coupled or more. Often the third axle was blind ... as the trailing truck was often part of the rigid wheelbase. Often the trailing truck was able to rotate with angled axleboxes (Bissell truck(??)) ... it was uncoupled so could not bind the connecting rods when moving in an arc.
      Most model engines had/have blind centre drivers on 6 or more coupled locos because the model curves were much tighter than scale radius.
