I'd just like to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge. This "old age" newbee really does appreciate this.
Great tutorial - really appreciate you sharing your tips and tricks when it comes to recording acoustic guitar. Also, borrowing the high strings from 12 string set never occurred to me, but it sounds incredible - can't wait to try!
My preferred way to record acoustic or spanish guitar is a neumann tlm 193 with a neve 1073lb gained up to the max until it peaks and then backed off 1 or 2 clicks. Trim output to -6db peak when recording. It is amazing. I'm using an AKG C414B in fig 8 with the tlm 193 when I do it with M/S. The room I use is evenly balanced with live and dead and about 8m2. The acoustic and spanish guitars just sparkle. I can't think of a better word. Not harsh or brittle just twinkly 😁
You covered all the mic techniques I use man. Except for mentioning that mic-ing the guitar away from the sound hole is a good idea. I usually just double track acoustics and pan left and right if I'm trying to get a guitar in a full mix. I have the mic focus on the area somewhere between ninth and twelfth fret. Much closer than your micing in the video (like, as close as I can get the mic to the player without interfering with the playing). If it's a guitar and voice thing finger picked I just use one guitar. (meh, you asked. what do I know)
Great channel and great tips. High strung guitar overdubbed to a standard one is a very effective way to add sparkle and air. Also, I encourage you to try out the Miktek C5 small condenser mic. Beautiful addition to a mic locker!
It’s a great sounding piece of kit, I’m looking forward to trying the new R88 with phantom power. Using it on quiet sources is sometimes a little challenging because of how much gain it requires. :)
Love your vids. Esp the mic demos with the whole track recorded w one mic. Would you recommend the u87 as an everything mic on par with the u47 or FET47. would love to see a whole track with one. keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! I have an original U87i, when it’s the right source it is an amazing mic. I found the U47FET to be a really flexible mic across the board. The U47 valve mic is another beast all together, it’s surprisingly flexible and extremely forgiving. The best thing to do is to get a demo of each of them and see what works best for your ears, room and different sources. Hope this helps! :)
Another great and informative video here Alec! Going to try out that double mic setup this weekend. Also is that all high E's on the Takamine? Time to restring my Gretsch :-D
Something to consider with M/S recording is how the positive side of the fig 8 pattern adds up with the mid microphone, while the negative polarity copy of the Fig 8 mic will be lower in volume because of it not adding up with the mid mic signal. This can often confuse folks when the signal pulls toward the side of the positive side pattern. You can offset this effect by simply pulling down the positive polarity side signal to match the negative. Hope that helps. Nice work!
@@birdhub-uk that’s an option, but personally I prefer to keep the mid side mic as the primary capture, and place it where it sounds the way I want, and then compensate the side duplicate cancellation or addition by adjusting faders. There’s definitely more than one way to do it.
Thank you! :) it’s a series of E & B strings from a 12 gauge set. I would recommend getting an acoustic 12 string set and only using the high strings. Sacrificing 3 sets of strings was a bad move on my part!
They are great for tracking as they are not super hyped. That saves quite a bit of time from a mixing standpoint. I don’t think the headband has enough cushioning, so after long periods the top of my head feels like it’s been holding up a set of aluminium headphones. The ear cups are great, not only for comfort, but also in isolation for click bleed etc. I hope that helps. :)

Thank you so much Peter! :)
A really beautiful example of the "High strung acoustic"-thing that he talks about at the end is the intro to Bon Iver's song "Holocene"!
That’s correct! Thanks for pointing that out. :)
Really love the high strung acoustic technique
Super useful! :)
Killer trick with the octave strings. Definitely gonna try that one. I’ve had that same takamine for 10+ years and still love it.
It’s a wicked guitar! :)
excellent video. thanks
Thank you so much! :)
Glad to join the channel. Nice work.

You made them all sound very good 👍
Thanks so much! :D each of them are great techniques, neither is better than the other. :)
Great video! Thanks for sharing your acoustic guitar recording techniques.

This was extremely valuable; thank you😊

Thank you Daniel! :) absolutely. Big fan of high strung guitars.
I REALLY want to get my hands on some Miktek’s.
What a great channel!
Thank you Sebastian! :)
Cool!

Love your channel, videos just get better and better!
Thank you my man! :)
Thank you for all the high quality and highly valuable videos. Would love to hear your opinions on the ATC's vs the Footprints you had.
Sure thing! :) will be filming a monitoring video soon.
More Videos on Mic techniques. Loved this one sir:)
Sure thing! :D thank you so much.
I'd really like to try something like the AEA R88 microphone for acoustic guitar.
It’s a great sounding piece of kit, I’m looking forward to trying the new R88 with phantom power. Using it on quiet sources is sometimes a little challenging because of how much gain it requires. :)
57s are underrated for acoustic instruments.
So good! I would say that it’s underrated in general really.
Agreed 👍🏻
Gonna swoop that mkh 416 ! Where do you normally position it ?
really helpful video mate, liked and subed 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you so much! :D
just subscribed and thank you for the tips, are the background guitar melodies on spotify?
Not yet! :) they will be soon though.

If you buy a set of 12 string pack, use all the high strings. :) I have used E’s and B’s but that was a MASSIVE waste of string sets.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll definitely check up on that and give it a go. :)
if the midside & mid mix sum is wonky you have to twist the midside mic to fix also try omni instead of cardioid

@@Strangebird_Recording If you are meaning fixing the wonky sum afterwards by adjusting fader levels then sorry that is incorrect all the best
have you ever made a video on the recording chain you use? do you record on tape or digitally?
The chain changes depending on what I am reviewing. :) I record digitally.
Hey dude! Awesome video. What are the string sizes of the high strung acustic? thanks
Thank you! :) it’s a series of E & B strings from a 12 gauge set. I would recommend getting an acoustic 12 string set and only using the high strings. Sacrificing 3 sets of strings was a bad move on my part!
Hello Alec ,
Did you change your guitar nut for the high string acoustic guitar ?
Hey Dinosatriani :) I changed the bridge, the nut seems to be ok with it, but the bridge was too high.
@@alecbrits thank you very much 👍🏻
What mic stands are you using for dual mic recording?
Hey Zane. :) SAMSON MB1 MINI BOOM STAND
See if you can get in a pair of Line Audio CM4 mics.
I’ve not checked them out! :) I’ll need to read up on them.
@@alecbrits Another banger. If you feel like a part 2. Check out the Senn. MKH 50. It does it all very well.
@@AudioJanitor I tried the MKH20’s a couple videos ago. They blew my mind. 👌🏽
Do you like those Neumann headphones?
Comfortable ?
They are great for tracking as they are not super hyped. That saves quite a bit of time from a mixing standpoint. I don’t think the headband has enough cushioning, so after long periods the top of my head feels like it’s been holding up a set of aluminium headphones. This is boss
Thanks Sam!! :)
What gibson j45 is this?
J-45 Custom. :) Rosewood back and sides.
Hi Alec, which pattern are you using on the 414?
Hi Jens! When it’s by itself on the acoustic, it’s in cardioid. When it’s in mid-side, the microphone is on figure 8. :)
