I can relate. I left my husband after being married for 43 years. He is an alcoholic and I stayed really too long. But I left with very little and started a new life it’s still kind of of scary but I have so much more self respect and I am actually happy. Thanks for sharing your story and now I’ve shared mine with you. We are stronger together!

We are in the process of moving into our retirement home . It is 30 meters from our old place . I have been slowly bringing things as I have needed them . After a few months I haven't filled my cupboards yet .
I did bring all of my yarn and crafty bits but have been weeding out anything I don't love . I know a few people starting their crochet journey so have been passing it on .
    It has been liberating.

I need to do that also. I'm feeling so overwhelmed by it that I'm having a hard time getting started. I did manage to go through my clothes closet. It's a small step, but at least it's a step in the right direction. I'm like you, I give things away.
Thanks again for being an inspiration!

My last move, 9 years ago, we found a dozen or so boxes in the basement. My wife said to me, "we haven't missed whatever was in those boxes for the last 15 years. don't open them, because we will get sucked in. We haven't missed it, so just throw it away"

When hubby and I downsized from Large home to a small 2/2 dwelling I gave 90% if my home items to those in need, specifically a family that immigrated from Africa and had nothing, and what the couldn't take we gave to our local Hospice thrift store. The feeling was great, not only giving to those in need, but also, purging "stuff" from our lives!! Thank so much for sharing your thoughts and feeling about this❤❤❤

I do have a little bit of a knik knak collection. I've thought about getting rid of most of it but haven't done it yet. The way you talked about letting it all go makes me motivated to do the same. Have a great holiday, hugs. ❤❤

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I find it very difficult to let go of things, even those I'm certain won't ever be used again.
However, once in a while I get the ghost of purging get to me, and once I get rid of stuff, I never look back or miss any of the items.
I do always give stuff away or throw it in the garbage. I never resell any of it. Like you said, once I decide to get rid of it, it's not worth anything to me and I don't want to deal woth the hassle of selling it. It also makes me feel better, knowing things that I bought and enjoyed for as long as I did, will bring joy and be useful to others.

  • @VirginiaBronson

I love that approach. I had a tendency to hang on to everything previously, but then I had a period of repeated homelessness, and obviously had to let most things go. It was rather freeing to know and get comfortable with the fact that one really doesn't need much to get by. Now I live in a tiny cabin, and getting rid of things periodically is necessary or else the clutter closes in!

I've done these purges also, and then changed my behavior to limit what comes into my space. I much rather give my things away to someone who wants them, so I post on our local buynothing Facebook page. If a neighbor doesn't want the item, I box it up for donation.

Mikey, thank you for sharing this. I needed to hear it. My daughter died at age 37 & I've kept her things, even her clothes for years. She had just learned to crochet. Then my husband died & I've kept his things. Over the years I'm finally able to realize that my daughter's not coming back to wear these clothes that I kept laundering time after time but then packing away again and again. Hearing this makes me realize it's unnecessary to continue to carry so much heavy baggage. Thank you❤️

I love cleaning my stuff, rearranging it. I do have a problem getting rid of family things, that have been in my family for hundreds of years. (Heirlooms) and my genealogy info. Newer things can go.😂. It may take me awhile several cleanings but I do eventually get rid of things not used anymore. Like you I hate garage sales I give it away to friends family or shelters depending on what it is.

  • @omaeve

My aunt had a chair at the door to her garage and it had a big box sitting on it and things she was ready to get rid of. She just threw in the box especially things that she thought someone else would want and she just put a big free if you want it take it it’s yours on the box that I thought that was a great idea. You don’t have to have a garage sale, you don’t have to decide what to do with it which was particularly hard for me because my husband was in the Air Force and we moved all the time like every 2 to 3 years over 20 years that’s a lot of moving.

When we were first married we made friends with an older military couple. The wife told us that they moved often; if boxes had not been opened in 6 months after the recent move, then they disposed of them. Yikes. She figured “if we’d needed it, we would have looked for it.” I wish I could say that we followed that advice, but unfortunately we didn’t and are now slowly winnowing things down. It is difficult to do when you have “things” you really love.

It's almost fifteen years since we moved into the house and I have sooo many boxes of stuff that I need to get rid of. I know people will say if you haven't seen it in that long, just get rid of it. But I know there are things in there that I want to keep, or get to someone who can use it. There are also things that should be shredded. So, a quick look for most of it should work. We shall see. 😊

My kids always joke that if they want to make something that mum will probably have what they need and the majority of time I do. I keep a memory box with sentimental items in which lives at the bottom of my wardrobe. I lost my home 5 yrs ago and sold some things but couldn't decide what to keep so packed the rest (which physically almost killed me). Now I am having the opp to go thru everything and donating, selling or throwing it away. It is hard and very time consuming and in some things make me sad about when I think about the associated memories. However, I'd rather have someone else enjoy and use the items than having them just sit. Only keeping the things I really, really want.

I have a few things I like/. I like cookie jars. Also I find that if I haven’t used something in 3-6 months I get rid of it, except cloth. I keep winter cloths for winter and summer for summer, but I do go though them every few months and if I can’t remember the last time I wore it, it’s gone. Also I don’t keep anything I haven’t used in three months like electric or other stuff. I also have to do this to my kids rooms when they are at school as they want to keep everything and they never want to get rid of anything, even trash. I have to go though their room two to three times a week as they hoard stuff.
