    I'll never forget when i visited Austin back in 2018 some latinos walked by me and friends and said "Bout time its some black people around here hell yeah" lol wasnt the only time something like that was said either. I think the people would welcome some diversity in Austin

    Great video my friend. I have been here in Austin for over 35 years now. We used to have a very vibrant black community on the east side, (where I live). Recently, gentrification and real estate development has totally changed and mangled that community. Many older black families were essentially forced from their homes due to taxes. This has really changed what I always considered the soul of Austin and the reason I wanted to live on the east side, (well, that and the fact I had no money). If you could have seen East Austin 35 years ago, you would have been in heaven. It is all gone now and unrecognizable.

      Yeah, I've been Austin for more than 25 years from Inglewood, Calif. The black and brown community on the east side has almost completely disappeared due to gentrification. I really appreciate going home to L.A. several times a year and spending time in the hood of Inglewood with an economically vibrant African-American and Hispanic- American community. Just hoping the coming newly built Rams stadium does not change things too much. There are some rising fears there now of coming gentrification. Just appreciate and support our communities of color as often as you can to help maintain diversity in our cities which is a nice and good thing for all city residents.

    • @richardcogbill6791
      @richardcogbill6791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I took a West African drumming class at the Carver African-American center in East Austin a few years back, but class was cancelled due to lack of interest in the community. Sad that besides me and the instructor, very few people of color would show up. There seemed to be more curious white residents coming by occasionally to try drumming with us than black or Hispanic folks. I'm always open to everyone and the sharing of each other's history and culture, but it was disheartening the lack of interest shown by the majority of residents who were still black and Brown on the east side. I'm still interested in finding an African drumming class or group to learn with.

    Excellent video! I moved to Austin with my beautiful black caribbean wife (I am Puerto Rican) from Miami in 2007. I definitely felt the lack of black culture here and the mrs could not find a decent hair dresser anywhere. Pflugerville is probably the best place for black slash interracial couples nowadays. You are not far from downtown and the acceptance is great. I am in the tech scene so north austin is where the money is at. Outside of the lack of black culture, everything about the city is great to raise a family when you balance schools, finances, safety and a certain sense of laidbackness. Plus the outdoor and free to do events are great! Just my 2 cents

      Richard Galarza my husband and I are considering moving around the Austin area because he is a tech person and I am an art person. I heard traffic is terrible and the taxes are steep. Do you know some small rural towns near Austin. We both wouldn’t mind living outside of the city limits.

    • @richardgalarza7882
      @richardgalarza7882 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@msbettyboop1984 On the outskirts for a Techie family, I would recommend Taylor which is just outside of the round rock town. Still has the small town feel for the moment but is close enough to work in North austin where most tech jobs are at. The traffic is terrible everywhere so you have to pick your balance.

Hopefully more black people in Austin can change this! I’m looking forward to talking with my manager about transferring!

    I feel you on the uncomfortable reactions from other ethnicities. I’ve never experienced discrimination in my life. I’m from nyc/nj I’ve been living in Eastern Europe now for over a year and I kid you not women will grab their children away in fear when they see me. People will literally call you a n$#%*& over here and just look overall disgusted by my presence.
    Thanks for this vid. I’m looking to relocate back to the states and people keep telling me to go to Texas. I’m pretty sure the discrimination can’t be as bad as in Eastern Europe.

    Enjoyed your video. We're thinking about moving to Round Rock/Georgetown area. You say traffic is bad. We live in CA (inland empire) and it's 3-4 hours daily going 50 miles each way. Is Austin like that too? As for the homeless population, we have 60,000+ in LA alone. In the inland empire (I.E.) it's getting worse as bigger cities want to move homeless to the I.E.

    I agree with other posters that this is the most accurate Austin video I have seen yet. As someone who was born and raised in Texas, I had no idea our speed limits were weird. Edited to add: I am also black, and I do agree that there aren’t many black people here, and I have experienced being treated differently likely because of my race. I went to college in Austin 2014-2018, and it’s amazing how much the more diverse areas (Riverside) have changed even in the two years I’ve been gone. I haven’t spent much time on the east side, but I’ve heard there are more minorities there.

I currently live in SD & am looking at phd programs (unfortunately there is not a program here) and came across one in Austin. I love SD so & wouldnt leave if i didnt have to so it makes me feel a little more comfortable hearing that the Austin vibe is somewhat of similar vibe!

    Hey we are moving to Austin in a couple months. Great video. Diversity is one of the main reasons we look for a neighborhood. Where are the most stable neighborhoods for diversity in Austin?

    Thanks for sharing your feelings man! Hoping to get down there myself soon. I was wondering what field of work you were in that there were so many opportunities... I’m currently searching indeed in the construction realm and haven’t seen too much.
    Cheers!

    Hi so I’m looking to move in a few months here and I don’t know if I missing in the video but how is the diversity in Texas compared to the Midwest? And like what level do you think you feel safe and comfortable in your neighborhood?

      You gotta check out my other videos lol. I ended up leaving ultimately because of the diversity. However, Austin is a safe city. Super safe.

    I love the speed limit down here, but it sucks being used to it and going back to Chicago to see family. I'll be going 55 down the street back home and then see a "Speed Limit 35" sign and be like, oh shit.

    Thank you for this video. I considered Austin but now I am pretty confident we are going to relocate to a diverse city elsewhere... probably in Florida. Diversity matters to me and is a huge factor in my decision-making. I am currently in Dallas and while I live in a diverse nice area it doesn't feel like home. My two little ones and I desire to be near water with more activities for them. I am glad I came across this video.

    Great video. Thanks for addressing the cons especially the gentrification. I moved to htx from Chicago and was thinking of exploring Austin due to the aesthetic but wasn’t sure how it would be raising kids there. I’ll have to visit for sure. What are the best places to eat or hang ?

    Black millennial male doc Living in Philly now for the last 2 years. Thinking of moving to Texas. Houston is high on the list but I remember visiting austin in my early 20s and liking the scene minus the lack of diversity. If i move there I’ll look you up bro. I’ll be the 8th black guy you’ve seen cthu.

    Sorry you are having to deal with feeling like people are afraid of you that sucks. As a middle-aged man about to move to Austin from Tyler TX I feel I will have to be more watchful over my family in general being in the city. Unfortunately that stereotype does exist in some minds. Saying hi and smiling is something that texans do to make each other feel like a friend. I pass all men every single day that greet me with a smile and how's it going and vise versa. Maybe that will help ease the mind of people who just get hung up on stereotypes Instead of showing fear to what they don't understand. God bless.

    • @MakingBigMoves
      @MakingBigMoves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After sticking around and traveling to the surrounding cities you realize how basic austin food really is. It was a upgrade from where I was coming from so I was a little shell shocked but after eating it and realizing how many good type of places were missing it hurt. Going out to eat in Houston and Dallas was sooo much better. I think austin will get there though.
