    I’m expected to move there March due to work, but I didn’t realize how bad crime was. Even the luxury apartments say the wheels were stolen or break ins and most of these luxury apartments have reviews (mostly negative) and say they have roaches and mice! I canntttt! Is this true… or you think it’s just people being petty? I’m looking into Alexandria, Arlington, Waldorf, Kingstowne. Any advice anyone who is CURRENTLY still in the area??

    I grew up in the MD suburbs and moved to NYC in my 20s. I'm now in my 50s and have decided to move to DC. NYC is great and all... but it has changed and I have changed too. And being a NYer as an old person is a very different experience than being a NYer as a young person. It seems to me that I am less and less inclined to experience the city and have basically just relegated myself to merely existing here but with all of the inconveniences and high costs of being in Manhattan. I work remotely and am a few years from retirement so I could theoretically live anywhere. But I chose DC because a) It is close enough to NYC that I could back at any time without too much effort. b) World-class museums and cultural institutions, most of which are free. c) It's a beautiful, clean city with access to 2 (or 3 if you count BWI) international airports. d) It's cheaper than NYC overall. I live in a tiny co-op apartment in NYC now but am in contract to buy a townhouse in Georgetown and I can't wait to finally have closets and rooms and a back yard. DC has also changed a lot since I was a kid, but in many ways I think it has changed for the better. I look forward to long walks on the National Mall and biking through Rock Creek Park and the C&O Canal. The weather in DC sucks but it also sucks in NYC as well.

    DC traffic is bad because we don't have as many left turn lanes as we need. Basically, most ppl will drive in the right lane because if you drive in the left lane, you'll end up stuck behind someone turning left. Also, during rush hour, on major streets, there's no parking along the curb lane. However, a car will inevitably be stopped there. So, again, you're stuck unless you just drive in the right lane (where everyone who got stuck will try to get into). Plus, some lanes turn into turn-only lanes with little warning. Also, you have to be comfortable with parallel parking, yes, traffic circles, and leaving at least 15 minutes cushion for driving around to find a parking spot.

    As a semi-native and current resident of DC, I would say a major con (that perhaps proves cons outweigh the pros) is that a lot of people leave. I have several friend who I've watched come and go. DC has some enclaves of generational natives, but unlike many cities (like my native New Orleans), many if not most ppl come here for a job and leave for another job or to start a family. DC can be quite lonely, especially once your peers start getting married.

    Word. Nailed it. Plus, you said honest things that nobody here would ever say They are stuck in the koolaid. Lack of diversity. So called "nightlife" sucks. Practically zero hip hop clubs per your example. Public transportation, yep true. And no public transportation west of 1/Mopac. The lack of diversity and culture, It DOES seep into everything and I'm commenting here as a person who grew up in California and lived most of my life in the Bay Area, for other people who expect there to be things like good radio stations, or places to dance to dance music, , old school, r&b, hip hop, low riders, they are not here, as well as alot of other things you are accustomed to like people being used to diversity. I know your video is 3 years old but still wanted to add another perspective and testimonial. Austin has had alot of growth and change over the past 10 years and has less of an identity now than ever. All people have a personality of some kind right? Well Austin has people so it must have a personality but does it?

    He’s so wrong about the food. DC has a lot of really great restaurants and food. Take a look at the Michelin food guide. It’s just not accessible to everyone. You gotta pay to eat well in DC and have reservations.

    i moved to SE DC district 8 and I've already had a lady threaten me for trying to warn her about a parking notice posted on our apartment, been spat at on the train because i look white, been accused of being an undercover cop for asking a police a question. Witnessed a domestic assault and had to give a neighbor my phone to call the police after her lover assaulted her and i have only been here for a little over a month.

  • @billbissenas2973
    @billbissenas2973 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    DC also feels bit culture-less, a bit sterile compared to other cities. Maybe that’s because of the large federal government presence, the tourists and the transitory nature of a large part of the population.

  • @billbissenas2973

    I’ve been here since ‘89. Some things are better, some worse. I agree about the food scene, although there are some great places. Crime was very high in the 90s, then declined but now it’s on the rise again. Many areas of DC are being renovated and there is a construction renaissance ongoing. Traffic is a nightmare. The number one reason not to move to the dmv is traffic. Also, housing prices are through the roof.

    So I'm going to say this as a Washingtonian. DC has its problems and it has its perks. Please name on city that doesn't? You said you ate from Philly? Philly has a whole lot more problems than dc and the crime rate is higher and you all do not get paid no wjere near us. Which brings me to my other point. In 2008 the housing market drop, all of these other states suffered greatly and places closed down, Dac and its suburbia did not..qe falter a little but we stayed open. And after that according to the statistics in the city paper, 6000 people per week moved to the DC area because of the high paying jobs and stability of the workforce here. Which makes sense this is the heart of the federal government. With that being said.. why don't all of you all that complain about DC go back to wjere you come from.and stay there? I bet you won't because you know you won't be as financially affluent as if you stayed here. I have never met agenersti9n of people that cy and bitch and complain about every little thing when the power is really in your hands. What power? LEAVE! Go back from where you came instead of crying about it. Most folks places got bad ish the difference is, you all grew up there so to you all it's ok cause you accepted it. You can not come to another city or state and expect it to be like home. If that is the case.. why leave your home state? And to me that is the stupidest ish I heard. You are 2, 4, 6 hours and even 600 to 200 miles away from home and expect it to be like home or similar? Really? Get gone.
