- When NHS worker Eileen Allen discovered the motorhome of her dreams on eBay last month, she handed over £10,000 to secure the vehicle to a woman pretending to be a bereaved widow called ‘Jemma’, only to discover she was being scammed. Having still not received all of her money back, Eileen joins us to warn others about the sophisticated scam that left her out of pocket. And with recent figures showing that Brits lost £4billion to fraudsters in 2022, our scams expert Jenny Radcliffe will be revealing her top tips on how to protect yourself on online marketplaces.

How is it eBay’s fault when u tried to do a deal outside of eBay ??
Always go through eBay and pay via PayPal. NEVER pay out of eBay, any one asking for payment this way is a scam. I have bought on eBay for over 20 years and have never had a problem

ive used ebay for 20 years always had 100 per cent rating and never used paypal ever just check peoples history if they have other items and their rating and normal bank account is also fine to use
Never pay "friends and family" payments on PayPal either as it's seen as a gift and NOT a transaction.

I will never understand people who hand over money before seeing the product. I receive scam calls daily, and just ignore them. Never trust the adverts on ebay. Unfortunately they are part of the problem. Scammers are very good at grooming people with emotional stories, such as death, disability etc.

I'm not being funny but this is common sense. No one has had to tell me not to spend this much money online outside of a trustworthy website before even seeing the goods.
I'm sorry for her but she is her own worst enemy. She ignored all the warning signs and handed over money outwith eBay, PayPal etc to someone she did not know for something that she had never seen.

If it looks too good to be true. Its 100% not true. This isnt ebay fault. People need to be more careful with sending money randomly to a woman crying on the phone.

I think people especially a certain generation have no clue of red flags & what to do instinctively when it comes to online stuff like scams.
Sorry. but anytime we have bought cars from EBAY, the funds sent do NOT go directly to the seller, the funds stay in a holding account within EBAY and are released once vehicle is delivered. If you are a long time customer of EBAY....you should have known this and NOT sent money directly to the seller. Do your due diligence!

Sorry, but you cant blame ebay. The decided to pay off the ebay site, which they tell you never to do. She should have done her research and realised that the motorhome was well below value and if she did, then nothing is to good to be true.

Every time I hear these stories, it never fails, the scammed person is incredibly naïve and easily deceived. Listening to them you can actually see it coming before anything happens. No way would I EVER hand over so much as a penny for something never seen, and a seller never met. I have an extremely difficult time being sympathetic accordingly.
Sometimes when people's emotions are heightened they lose all sense of rationality. She obviously got way too excited and was impulsive and got caught up in the trap of it all.
There are lots of “smiling thieves” online and offline these days, they just bet on the victim’s’ sympathy, kindness and avoidance (to accept the reality of being scammed). It’s sad that many are not vigilant nor strong minded enough and they have to learn it the hard way.
No it wasn't, I would never have phoned a number off eBay how can anyone fall for this.
A fool and their money are easily parted.
It's almost as if you aren't allowed to contact a seller privately on ebay...

I feel for her that she got scammed! It’s disgusting what they did to her but i have to say when buying any type of motor you shall ALWAYS view it! Because there can be damage not seen on pictures etc. that’s what rings alarm bells for me, the seller not allowing her to see it 😅

eBay is to blame? How? U skipped purchasing via the platform and sent the funds direct.
This is clearly stated on eBay help not to be done.

im to paranoid for scams i still overthink when i know something is 100% legit and im only spending a tenner nevermind 10,000
Never ever give your details to anyone you don’t know who is at the other end of the line scammers are criminals
She was completely reckless. First not even viewing what she was buying and second avoiding all of the safety features of trading through the app. It was not even a very clever scam. They just saw her coming.
I saw a motorhome on eBay & knew it was a scam due to the low price, when I enquired about coming to view it, the location was KY16, Kirkwall in Shetland Isles. It all went quiet when I said Great I love a road trip.
I didn't make another payment the same day..... (Silence) 😶.... I made it the next day 🤣🤣🤣🤣🙈... Oh okay that makes it all better then lol
I only purchased a mask during covid costing 2 pound i usually check the sellers history it turned out ut to be a scammer, even though it was only 2 pound i felt annoyed because if 500 people had purchased one they would have made a thousand pound for nothing,i did pursue it an got my money back out of principle, lesson learnt though i would never purchase anything without checking the seller's history,but i don't know how anyone can hand over thousands of pounds without seeing something this expensive first,she has learnt a valuable lesson the hard way,i do feel sorry for her though these people are scum of the earth.

I drove 2 hours to his house address and got my money back or a trip to the dentist was on the cards
Giving a deposit before u have even seen the item is ridiculous, I liked this dining table once the pic looked great but when I got there it was all scratched up, u could not tell on the pic though.

Ebay does not allow direct contact by phone. A buyer has to contact the seller through Ebay messaging.
Don't understand where she found the mobile phone number.
There are many adverts on eBay listing a phone number.

PayPal will get your money back IF you have paid through Ebay properly. She paid privately which is a huge NO NO as eBay will tell you.

She didn't go through eBay. She called direct. There was absolutely no connection with eBay apart from the hosted advert.
Why does she keep crying l don't understand
A lot of the fault is through eBay now they have changed payment options so can take their fee before you get paid
That doesn't make sense. If you sell or buy through eBay and follow their rules you will NEVER have a problem. I have been seller and buyer for over 20 years and NEVER had a problem.
EBay encourage you not to complete sales for items away from their platform as your not protected and there’s also no audit trail, evidence etc.
Can’t put the fault on eBay for that.
I see these complex scams as part of my job. Fraudsters will do anything to subvert anti fraud measures and use many techniques to gain your trust.
