The Cosby Show was one of the most popular shows of the 1980s and it was about a black family. It didn't preach about the family being black - they were just an upper-middle class family (father was a doctor and mother was a lawyer) who just happens to be black. As a Chinese-Canadian kid growing up in the 1980s I couldn't relate to them being a black family but I could relate to them being family - the younger generations don't understand that... you don't need to be exactly like the character to relate to them because you have a shared humanity!

What's Being Pushed: "What's your race, gender identity, sexuality, etc. How you answer will make us either love you or hate you."
What I Care About: "You seem like you're a calm and reasonable person. Are you a calm and reasonable person?"

Thank you for sharing your perspective and insight. It is great to hear from you. It was a shock to see this thumbnail in my TH-cam feed! It sounds like we grew up in the same era so we likely enjoyed much of the same media.

You're quite welcome. Thank you for the videos you share with us. They are very insightful. Yea, our era was golden. It seems for these "modern" developers and producers to try to get a foothold they pretend that entertainment achievements of the past never happened, but as we know their tactic is no longer working.

Aging GenX gamer here. My generation has been told point blank that modern games, tv and movies "are not for us" and to "get over it". Then we get told we're bigots for not watching/playing. The biggest irony is that my generation gives 0 Fs how someone identifies. "Are you a kind person?" That's what we care about. TLDR: We have checked out

Fellow GenX gamer here. Worse still is that these same companies (I'm looking at you Wizards of the Coast!) has told me old players like myself aren't wanted but then their marketing department cater to 1980s nostalgia because they know that Gen Xers have more disposable income. Which is it - do you want me to leave to hobby or do you want me to stay and spend money on your products? You can't have it both ways!

I think parts of the reason why we see it is almost exclusively people we see in the entertainment industry having this holier-than-thou attitude is because:
    1. A lot of these people were the same ones in all those "cool kids clubs" who hated and picked on "the nerds" growing up because they liked games and other entertainment media. And now that the very reason that those they bullied has become an industry that has blown even movies out of the water, NOW they want in on it, because NOW it's "cool".
    2. these people sincerely (and very wrongly) believe they're entitled to be the next generation of "cultural icons", who get to decide what is "art" and what isn't, along with trying attain any semblance of celebrityhood. So, they see it and everything related to it, which means us as the audience, as literal stepping stones to something higher and thus below them.

concord is what entitled rich people think the minority want and that we should be thankful to be "represented" and exploited

  • @RM_VFX
    @RM_VFX 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think this marketing strategy has burned more would-be allies by getting in everyone's faces. We're now far more likely to steer away from media with "diverse" casts because we're so used to being preached to, and at some point they can't expect to keep smacking our knuckles with that ruler and expect us to keep coming back.

    • @baalfgames5318

Frankly, it's not just "woke" media causing this, but cry-wokers throwing a tantrum over games simply having diverse characters and representation, automatically labeling anything that doesn't pander exclusively to them as "woke."

I also grew up around that time and felt like there was a ton of diversity. Strong women and people of color were normal to see in games, tv shows and media. These modern activists act like my childhood never actually happened. It's bizarre. Most have no problem with realistic diversity so long as it fits the story and setting. What they do have an issue with is the unnatural forced garbage being created today. They have a problem that female characters now look like men cosplaying as females or live on donuts (without there being a good reason for it written into the story) I've started to get the impression that these activists actually hate women and minorities with how grossly they portray them.

Except the characters in First Descendent are overly sexualized and treat women like objects. Besides that, the game's not even good. Women don't need to have jiggling breasts and unrealistically "secksy" faces to be well written.

Top surgery scars were such a brilliant (and brave) idea that many studios have decided to add them to their existing games. CDPR, for example, plans to add top surgery scars to the trans people in Cyberpunk so that when you date them, you can see the scars under their bosom!

Like... Don't get me wrong. I do believe diversity is important... but DEI initiatives, at least how they currently exist, are not the way to do it. At best, they're only filling a checkbox and are disingenuous. At worst, they're inadvertently fomenting a new wave of racism, and we're making reverse progress because of the way they handle it. Plus, as the both of you say, hiring based solely on filling numbers rather than based on skill, is hurting the quality of the final product. One can have awesome characters that represent minorities, without being aggressive and, dare I say, full of reciprocal contempt that only continues and perpetuates the cycle. Certainly without appropriating existing characters. Like I said, modern DEI just seems fake, and that's a shame, because most reasonable people will agree that diversity and representation is important. Just... not like this.

Not to mention it's also very "at the timesh" and trend chasey. It ages much faster than if you didn't do it.
The type of politics that MGS has is the type I'm sure nobody disagreed with (yes, nobody likes getting nuked, or getting commodified and turned into war machines etc.) Whereas look at Wolfenstein reboot. The New Order was an excellent tale of the human spirit overcoming oppression. Everyone, even the villains, were characters. The New colossus lost most of that nuance as it embraced current dayisms. In fact, consider this; BJ, the protagonist, is a Jew. In 2016, when New Colossus came out, they'd obviously be glazing the devs for that. In 2024 now, those some glazers would want the developers heads on pikes and say "Free Palestine" despite BJ being a Polish Jew. That's the issue.
