I honnestly don't mind artist changing the skin tones but please, just draw it. I saw some people in X that charged for a traced drawing to the anime, changes their skin color and that's it. they add the hair style but it's still traced....

As much as i love Stellar Blade i already dislike Hyung Tae simply for being such a shill for popular game studios just to get his business running even more than it already does. Theres really no need to simp for Neil Fu**man and Insomniac other than trying to get anything out of it. That together with the fact that they want to go public really has a real bad bytaste. Watch them go woke soon enough

The first piece was good! People are being dramatic over nothing. It had a good pose, composition and nice colors.

I made a Frick ton of ORIGINAL CHARACTERS from EUROPE EASTERN EUROPE AND NORTHERN EUROPE AND mostly Japanese some more Asian countries and very little Americans in my roster one Canadian and one Mexican if you count America as the continent, and for the hell of it I made characters who speaks a dialect

That concept sketch looked really cool and I like the face but yeah the pose and proportions were a little awkward at first glance. Cool for a sketch to get an idea out but maybe not something I'd leave in the portfolio.

Normally you would be right in your take...but in this case you are being naïve. You say that many people are assuming the worse ...but you are assuming this was all innocent. Same coin, different side.

I really like the designs. Other than in most other games, there are no "filler" or "we need one of those as well" or just "2020s quirky" designs. Each one looks as if someone loved the character and wanted to make it to look as cool and powerful as possible.

Personally, I think the first drawing looks perfectly fine. It’s not winning any awards it’s just fine, better than I could do anyway… The character in the Intergalactic trailer looks okay, to me it just looks like a more bland version of Jack from ME2

I called it on a SmashJT upload. Ppl were raging and crying woke, whereas although I despise the woke movement I just saw it as a quick homage reminiscent of 80s airbrush art. The proportions were off but it was far from an intentional statement. We really need to stop looking so hard for outrage.

I did not know about this crossover, it really is pretty weird. Shift Up/Hyung Tae Kim and Naughty Dog/Neil Druckmann are on completely opposite ends of the "should games be political or not" discussion. I didn't expect to see either of them care much about each other's works. The cynic in me is thinking this could be part of ND trying to appeal to fans of eastern media, the trailer for Intergalactic also has that vibe with the Akira references and the anime in the background. Let's hope it's less that and more of a genuine attempt to capture the things that people love about that media. For the main topic of the video I agree that the original artwork looks fine, I'm not a fan of the pose but it's clearly not the usual case of making women look ugly on purpose, just consequence of it being a sketch.

I'd say it's only fan art if you change more than their skin color. I have no issue if they use a different pose or change the background for instance the DAN DA DAN situwaton was just a traced art pice all they did was change the skintone and hair and add a few shades from my unprofessional eye I don't draw but I know if they told the same story just changing the charitors to black they'd get sueded. Take Miles Morals if he was a white character in the same story people would be sued and for good reason. Same goes for anyone trying to turn Petter Parker black and tell the same story. I'm not against fan art if they change the pose or background but when I can see the scene they screen grabbed or traced from it's not fan art it's basically implying I fixed it without saying it.

Exactly my thoughts, as well. I think people took it too far and this artist got a lot of unnecessary heat due to his association with Naughty Dog. The initial work to me, just looks like a sketch. It clearly wasn't meant to reflect the artist's ability, but it was more of what I would call a "fun work" he just did to unwind and have fun separate from his actual professional art. Imo the initial work was kind of like a gift and homage to the shift up team and not a fan art for the community. It was not necessary for it to be shared publicly especially on twitter of all places lol. Well, I don't think Shift Up anticipated that kind of reaction from the community when they shared the artwork. The artist definitely has an amazing portfolio no doubt about it, otherwise he wouldn't be in that position at naughty dog to begin with. I think he did the initial work with good intentions, purely as a fan of the game and as a fan of Eve and he didn't deserve the unwarranted backlash he got. People need to separate the individuals from the companies, just because they don't like what the company is doing, they shouldn't irrationally just go after any people associated with the company. He probably has zero say in the decisions and direction Naughty Dog makes for its games and even character designs. He's just an artist who creates concept art and illustrations for the given requirements by people like Neil Druckman. Mad props and respect to the artist for not lashing out and dispelling the hate by creating two more better quality fan works to appease the mobs. I think it is a lesson to us as well to treat people in the industry as individuals. As much as there's people who disrespect and lash out at gamers, there are plenty more genuine developers, artists, etc. that are well meaning and just want to create great games and characters that are loved by all, regardless of the company they work at.

The woke mind virus obliterated Druckman and naughty dogs brain. Sketch or not that looks like Jim Carrey as El Vira and not Eve. Trust me this wasn’t by accident. It’s the zeitgeist in these western studios that females should absolutely not be beautiful and sexy. That ugly sketch was not by accident. It could’ve been unconscious, it could’ve been a troll, it could’ve been to kiss up to Neil. But it was intentionally made to have that ugly ass face.

I agree this was overblown, i think youtube channels wanted to just ride the controversy and felt they had to put videos out about the subject to get views while topic was hot.

People talk so much about Intergalactic that we know nothing about except like few minutes trailer. The only thing that bother me is way that heroine have used clipper in the haircut scene... But anyway, my hype-of-the-year award is going to Expedition 33, and there only one thing that even close - Project Ceasar by PDX studio.

This is the only channel that's showing his follow up piece, I'm enlightened. All I know from years of being an artist is that you always gotta spend extra time on the face, even a small mistake there is super amplified.

is it not obvious that the guy's style with thick strokes doesn't mesh well with faces that are small in the frame or zooming in in general? like he does concept art or something? all the other faces he makes are way bigger and look way better.

What really gets me about the first sketch the guy did, is that it took a very feminine and softer looking character, and made it to look pretty angular, harsh and masculine. Which in itself, other than it doesnt capture the og vibe, would not be that much of an issue, if it wouldnt be so common nowadays to do this for ideological reasons alone, rather than it being an artistic choice. Would love to see your take on the intergalactic char. Would love to see her in a way that doesnt look like the bad guy in that kurt russel scifi movie "soldier". Great video.

I'm no artist, but I had the same impression about the first piece. She may not have had Eve's classic look, but she's killing a monster--so perhaps a little rage is justified. There's not such a big difference in Eve's design that the artist's unique style couldn't account for the differences, imho. Or, like you said, he may have just rushed this one out a bit quickly.

Like it depend if it was a one hover image it is a great image. But they make it look like it is a great image from the master itself.

looks like a super quick sketch from a accomplished artist. 0 effort but still turned out way better than i could ever draw. concept art is usually kinda loose with proportions too.

Best case scenario: The first picture was rushed as you said which makes me wonder why submit it. It’s fanart, so he could have taken his time to create portrait as close to Eve his style can permit. Worst case scenario: The artist’s first rendition was made to please Naughty Dog solely, not Shift Up or Stellar Blade fans while second picture appealed to the latter. I feel that an ND higher up told him to make an offering to Shift Up for relations purposes but because the audience felt it was half-asses, the company gave him more time to create the second.

My problem with the first piece is the emotion. It reminded me of USA Kirby's art boxes portraiting him with a angry face every single time
