The 03-04 Pistons was the pinnacle of a defensive team. We will never see a team that can hold opponents to under 80 or even 70 points for multiple nights.

All credits to the 2004 Pistons. I loved that team and I’m a Kobe fan. But we can’t deny that the Lakers were dysfunctional at that point because of the Kobe Shaq feud and I also remember Payton and Malone weren’t what they used to be as well. But of course, no excuses will be made because this is a once in a lifetime team.
As a native Detroiter, nothing and I mean nothing brings me greater joy than these guys getting the respect they deserve. They represented our city so well. Its a shame they only won one championship. Im good on the 05 loss to the Spurs (much respect to them and their organization) but the 06 Ecf loss to the Heat hurts me more than anything. The once great going to work era of the Detroit Pistons have been rebuilding in the league for over 23 straight years. This squad had gone 6 trips to the Eastern Conference Finals from - 2003, 04, 05, 06, 07 - 08. Reached the 2004 NBA Finals by upsetting the heavily favored L.A Lakers in 5 games & made it again in 05 but they ultimately fell short of their quest for back to back titles amongst the S.A. Spurs in game 7. Only to make the playoffs twice from 2016 & 19, exterminated from the 1st round. They were turned into a laughingstock without winning a single postseason series & missing the playoffs thanks to their devastating yet spectacular collapse of the franchise. 3 time NBA World Champions - (1989, 1990, 2004). Back to Back Eastern Conference Titles - (2004 - 05).
I know people say that the Pistons should've drafted Melo, but I think that Chris Bosh would've been a better fit for the team. The former didn't care too much for defense, while the latter would've fit a need at power forward. Let's also remember that Tayshaun Prince was instrumental in slowing Kobe Bryant down. Bosh would've given the team a go-to scorer, and he would better adapt to the Pistons' defensive philosophy. The only con about drafting Bosh is that the Pistons probably don't trade for Rasheed Wallace, who was huge for the team.
I actually think Melo or Bosh probably have a similar career to Darko in Detroit. The Pistons were focused on winning a title and Brown has never been great dealing with younger players developing. I feel like the mistake was not drafting Wade. An older, more team oriented player could have been that era's Vinnie Johnson and at 26-27 could have been the new star once the Pistons moved on from Billups and Hamilton.
@@khleezy5839 He always said if they drafted Melo, they wouldn't have made that mid-season trade for Sheed in 04. Sheed put them over the top. People assume Sheed would be there in addition to Melo, which wouldn't be the case.

One of the greatest "What Ifs" - having no 2. pick in one of the most loaded and deep drafts in history and still somehow drafting a bust... That's some achievement...
Beautiful how they kept their core together for 6-8 years, that's unheard of. Hindsight is 20-20, but it's baffling why they didn't keep the super 5 together even longer of Billups, Rip, Tay, Sheed, and Ben. Wish they kept Larry too. Goes to show that a championship team needs all the elements to be elite: offense, defense, and coaching. Side note: That's messed up that one of their bench players during their dynasty became their coach (Michael Curry) no wonder they starting losing. Really bad move.
