Paul Voerhoven could teach a masterclass on using action movies for social criticism. Robocop is about the militarization of police and privatization of public services; Total Recall is about the lengths governments will go to protect their evil policies; Starship Troopers is about the ease with which fascist military societies can be glamorized; Hollow Man is about the lack of ethics in military contractors and pharmaceutical companies. ALL of these are sensitive topics that seemed absurd at the time but only with hindsight can we see them as discussions made a decade or two too early.
There's only one good scene in the remake. It's when Murphy wants to know how bad the explosion was and they start dismantling him. Seeing the unwinding of his configuration actually does a good job of humanizing this Murphy in the world it creates, as well as being legitimately stressful for the viewer.
Couldn't finish the remake....Robocop is one of those movies that doesn't need a remake....like Karate Kid....another movie that was remade that had no connection to the original and has a completely different martial art and culture....and yet is called "The Karate Kid".....
I state this more as a suggestion, but the director's previous work is actually very interesting. It is unfortunate this film turned out the way it did.
There is a crucial difference in the take in the remake: in the remake Murphy has his previous life there and is trying to come to terms with what he became so it already shot down everything about Officer Lewis etc anyway the original robocop is sth that grows on me as i age
Great analysis. Robocop 2014 is probably one of the best examples of Hollywood producer interference in the creative process. A totally mediocre PG-13 film that took zero risks and paid the price with lackluster ticket sales. You think Hollywood would learn but they don't. Redlettermedia made a great review of this totally worthless reboot as well. You might enjoy what they bring to light.
Well it seems the Studio and film makers wanted to make a conventional action movie. It is funny if they checked the papers they could've used what was happening here in Detroit as story material(Since this video originally aired Detroit is out of Bankruptcy and the Emergency Manager is gone). It also doesn't help that this is a PG13 film. Maybe that's why they didn't do it. They figured that the widest audience wouldn't want to see a movie like that.
Unfortunately right now I can't scrape together surplus funds, but I have liked, subscribed, and commeneted. I want others to know and share with friends and family... From a disabled veteran, keep up the good work, and I will gladly contribute in the future.
I was about to make a snarky comment, then you said no wikipedia allowed. "And i would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you intelligible critics!" :p
Oh wow I don't know if you'll see this comment renegade cut but I'd love to see you do a new video analyzing robocop to talk about capitalism, law, corporate power, and most importantly who the police actually serve. I just watched robocop and said to myself I'll bet you did a great political video essay on robocop, but this was all I found. It's amazing how different you sound here, it's cool that you found your voice and really focused on anarchist political analysis as the years went on.
@@renegadecut9875 yeah I see what you mean it's all politics now, and i watch most of your videos when they come out and love them. I also really enjoy your older political videos that use film analysis as a window into real world politics. The original robocop is perfect for this kind of video since it's basically a documentary, and actually predicted some things that happened. That kind of film used for political analysis in order to talk about real world problems was always a good way to get people thinking and maybe even reach people who might not be all the way to the right conclusions yet too.
I agree with your reviews of both films. However, studios did not greenlight this film and director solely for the name. Robocop has been floating around for a long time. What made the remake happen is that they genuinely wanted to tackle something that was worth the investment. The director had genuine success with Elite Squad and you can see this in Robocop (2014). That he failed to make a good film can be blamed on many things but it was not made purely for the cynical reasons you suggest, just as the original Robocop was not made as the genuine genre classic it has become. Both had very commercial reasons to exist but on both, everyone cared about what they were making. That, unfortunately, does not equate to a good final product.
You've actually missed the point of the new robocop, it's about free will, consciousness and self awareness. You didn't get the subtle undertones to the film and only seen the obvious layers about drones and war.
Blake Gray Couldn't agree more. Plus the original has a lot of products, effects, movie trops and designs that are hilariously outdated by today's standards.

The fact you just played a Blackstar beat in the background made me love this channel so much more.
Robocop 1987 - progressive but still entertaining satire
Robocop 2014 - popcorn fodder for Betty & Joe Beercan demographic
BloodylocksBathory You forgot to add Nostalgia bait
In all fairness, the director 'did' try make it a hard R.
The ending shot showing what was truly left of Murphy's body was haunting but like you said, too little too late.
1:09 _”I’d buy that for a dollar !!!”_
I love the music you play in the background - Forgot about Dre, Forgot about Filmmaking!
He's more of a Cyborg than Robotic
part robot, part cop
Couldn't finish the remake....Robocop is one of those movies that doesn't need a remake....like Karate Kid....another movie that was remade that had no connection to the original and has a completely different martial art and culture....and yet is called "The Karate Kid".....
Thankfully we got RoboCop 2.
Murphy never asked for this.
Manman3872 Yeah, RIP.

Removing a female character in the remake...ha so you just can have a woman OR a black man in Hollywood movies.
Keep these retro episodes coming Leon. Great stuff as always. Would love to see an archive of Heart of Gaming episodes.
God I love classic Renegade Cut

Love your vids but would've preferred this analysis done purely on the 1987 film

Is that the instrumental to "Forget About Dre" at around 7:07?
The real horror of Robocop isn't Murphey being transformed into Robocop,
It's Robocop (1987) being turned into Robocop (2014).
May I request a 2020 update to this analysis?
I'm sorry, but I don't take requests.
If you really think about it the remake follows Murphy's Law lol
great review totally agree with ya brother
I really appreciate your videos!

Thank god I never watched this. As soon as I heard about everything missing in the "REBOOT" I dipped.
Brendan Fraser as Robocop. That's what the new one looks like.
10:28 THIS!
I just find your Channel and... OMG YOURE AWESOME!!!
(THX Nostalgia Critic!)
7:24 Aaaaand...here we go again

No. I'm not saying maybe, OK? I am saying no. I'm not changing my format and schedule for you. This is unwelcome. Take care.
Amen
Can't watch with from the UK :(

I think the Alvin and the Chipmunks parody of RoboCop was a better adaptation of RoboCop.
I didn't even know there was a Robocop remake. Having that actor would have turned me off from the start. I don't know why, but I can't stand him.

I kinda liked the remake. Saw it in the theater, but wouldn't buy it.
Not even for a dollar?
The remake was one of the worst remakes I have ever seen. And that's saying a lot
I really like the remake. Am I a bad person?
i like it too, drones, coming to terms with his new body. it was well done
Yeah, the remake sucked.

i think he was trying to much to find the old movie in the new one
So was the old one (his memories, the 4th directive), it's just that the new one doesn't convey the themes on an emotional level like the old one did.
