I have always loved the Celts. Their beautiful music, their beliefs and the countries where they frequented. They were the people of legend and mystery. They were a deeply spiritual people who honoured the Earth, the Animals and Women. They also inhabited the British Isles which are some of the most beautiful places of earth such as Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. Stories such as King Arthur came from them. I have always loved the story of Boudicca, the great Iceni Queen who fought for independence from the Romans. She was a great Queen indeed. 🙏 Some of my ancestors were in fact Celts from Scotland and Ireland. They are truly unique from anyone who has come before or since . Our Celtic Pride runs deep in my family.

If it weren't for the Romans we wouldn't know anything about the Tribes. It's like the Tribe that Prince Philip visited. And showed them pictures. They were amazed. You could see your ancestors. Seeing your ancestors was so important to that tribe and the tribal societies. As the ancestors were the gods. It wasn't like a single god theory. Society started by people burning the fire in the house and that was the fire of the god. Eventually, these got joined into becoming "Roman gods" but they were just noble houses and family fires. The Romans weren't just evil. They were an uplifting society, that uplifted humanity. Rather than tribal fighting. Romans found human sacrifice barbaric. That's what these tribes did.
She was emotionally driven by the treatment of Romans for her and her people. The 3 settlements she destroyed were manned by less than 2000 soldiers. She killed mostly civilians. When she face a real Roman army numbered just 10000 despite being having a fairly large army she got defeated. She chose poor battle tactics. She was a brave woman but not a good strategist.
And im sure she regretted it as well when a roman general schooled her with an army a fraction of her size. Her greatest accomplishments will always be tarnished by the unnecessary torture of civilians, men women and children alike.
a lot of that had to with the followers, her army got trapped trapped between their own supply line and the roman army, because civilians came out to watch the battle.
I don't understand why some people criticize a woman from two thousand years ago, and what she had did like this is a current event. And also comparing Boudicca to Hillary or anybody is absolutely ridiculous! This is a History film for people who are interested in history. The European tribes were sick and tired under Roman rule, and they were not the only ones. The Zealots led by Simon rebelled against Rome. Stop criticizing and learn history.
Anyone who can compare a great warrior queen like Boudicca to some corrupt hack like Hillary Clinton who used her lying, cheating husband for power are morons.
Because the way the story had been told here is ridiculous and has nothing historical in it. Is only pampering the mith of Boudica that had been created in early modern age.
sean sammon ? Ancient armies especially barbarian people cannot manage to assemble or campaign with that much army. Romans always exaggerated their enemies as every other people.
If she had been a man, the naysayers in these comments would be telling everyone what a brave hero she was to face the romans despite being outnumbered and them being better equipped. But it was a woman and we can't give women credit for being brave for fighting against the powers that be - especially men. It's amazing how frightened men are, to this day, of strong women. It's kind of pathetic.
I know, right? True she could've used better military tactics at the end. But the fact that she slaughtered 70,000 civilians, and a whole legion to prevent them from rescuing the first 20,000 is no small feat!!!
Well thing is... she lost and she did slaughter innocents. (Fight the power) In the end she failed. Not really a good role model. Now if you would like to learn of a real Queen who was a success I recommend Tomiris/Tomyris of the Scythians. 😉
@@burningman1239 A whole slew of military heroes have lost, but are still celebrated (Leonidas, Hannibal, Spartacus, etc.). And it's a sad fact, but ancient warfare didn't discriminate between soldiers and civilians. Instead of trying to hold them to a 21st century standard, look at what they tried to accomplish, and what they did accomplish regardless of whether or not they ultimately lost. Boudica set out to avenge not just herself but her impoverished people and violated children. She may have gone down in flames, but she gave Rome third degree burns in the process. And besides, various differing accounts exist of the death of Cyrus the Great. And Herodotus is not known for his accuracy.😉

I was an archaeologist for many years in Colchester and the town inside the Roman walls had a layer of black and burned material called the destruction layer. The Iceni and the Trinovantes didn't mess around!
Its said that Boudicca fled from the battle but poisoned herself for suicide a few days later. She could have only of invaded because the roman legion was in campaign in wales at the time. Boudicca also temporarily forced the legion to retreat, massively out numbering the roman army. Paulinus, the governor of Britain and the head of the legion believed he was going to die so he made a speech basically stating if they dont die in battle, they will being tortured. Paulinus then set up a last stand against Boudicca and ends up pulling out a victory after a long day of fighting. If anyone would like me to explain why the romans first came into the iceini after the death of boudicca’s husband i’ll explain because this video skipped over why they went in
Her husband (the king) died and tried to protect his land & family by making his daughters joint heirs with emperor Nero. Believing that that would protect them from Roman predation and his daughters could govern in Nero’s place. Of course, the romans had no respect for women so as far as they were concerned, it was now Nero’s kingdom/land and Boudicca and her daughters could get F’d. (Also, her husband was called Prasutagus.)
Your absolutely right, Caratacus spent years fighting the Roman's, attacking in guerrilla style, hit and run , joining with other Celts, including Welsh , where they were based . The only reason the Romans got him was because a norhern queen ,cartimandau ( of the brigante tribe, I believe) drugged his wine and handed him over to the Romans. Caratacus was part of the royal family who ruled the lands of middle Britain, the capital city was verulam ( later called verulamium, by Romans) modern day StAlbans, the city I live in . He's a local hero , but hardly gets mentioned by historians. I'm glad to see someone knows he was far more important than boudicca.
Also Tacitus was the son-in-law of the commander of the last battle, so he had a personal reason to talk it up. It's very unlikely the "army" was that large.
If the legends were written by the Romans themselves it could be total garbage. They were probably so embarrassed losing to a tribal woman they had to inflate her army numbers and say she slaughtered her own people to make them seem like the heroes of the hour 🤷♂️

That’s if you believe the Roman’s who essentially claimed 200 Britons died to every Roman. Call me skeptical but I am pretty sure the Romans were exaggerating about numbers. I highly doubt they were outnumbered 5 to 1 in reality.
@@erinroberts711 I do believe they were pretty outnumbered(although Rome has lied about numbers once that I recall from research and left defeats to big to hide with little detail from their writers), the Romans position was a very strong one, and they had superior military equipment and training, although Britians did indeed train and have a form of military discipline, they were much more suited for dueling where strength is matched one on one, a battle takes mind, timing and a connection with the troops, a lot of battles that are now famous victories actually came close to defeat for a a victor, Alexander at Gaugamella and Scipio at Zama both came very close to defeat.
Arminius was different, he lived and learned in Rome, becoming a soldier and knew their tactics, and how to beat them. Giving Rome a defeat so bad that they never recovered from it, stopping Rome from conquering Germania, the rhine river was set as a border.

1:16 How ironic that one day the descendants of Boudica would treat Irish, Scots, Welsh, etc. (as well as their own colonists in America) in this same way.
Read history you fool , Angels/Celts didn't dominate England , it was anglo-saxon & Norman society and lot of angels were already killed and concentrated only to Wales. Also in other fact African slave trade was completely dominated by Jewish slave traders.
Inexperienced. Had she sat back and taken a Look why they won certain battles, then she would have continued on with guerilla tactics jumping out from the forest to attack the Roman army when they were on the march and spread out. This is not the way the Romans fought. When they got out into an open field and the Romans set up their phalanx formation they could not be beaten. Even if you have 5 times the number of attackers. Boudica's forces were just farmers, not a profession army. She lost in the open field by allowing the Romans to pick the spot. I guess there is this pride to fight them head on face to face...rather than sneak attacks. That pride is why they lost. Had they won, then the Romans really would have come back with a bigger force.
And the romans wouldn’t have come back with a bigger army, the British tribes were wild, spread out, and for the most part Britain lacked significant resources that Rome wanted, pushing Britain would have been to much trouble for them and they wouldn’t have fought that hard if she had won. They gave up on Germany after 15,000 casualties
1. The Romans did not fight in phalanx formation. 2. Unless Rome lost an eagle standard, they'd have not gone back. And if they did lose one, they'd only go back to retrieve it. Britain was only conquered because Claudius wanted something behind his name. Nero succeeded Claudius, and by then it was obvious that Britannia was a financial drain on the imperial coffers. Eventually, the Romans did abandon Britannia...for the same reasons Nero wanted to abandon it. Seneca, Nero's mentor, played a big role in these events. Under Claudius, Seneca forced huge loans on the Celts, including the Iceni. Seneca wanted his money back, with interest. The Procurator that had Boudica flogged, was accompanied by thugs, belonging to Seneca. Nero wanted to abandon Britannia, but was convinced otherwise. Julius Ceasar was there a 100 years before and also determined that it was not worth it.

Rome had difficulty with many warrior queens and thus would over-exaggerate their victories to minimize the shame of fighting a woman (they greatly exaggerated Boudica's forces in the final battle and conveniently left out how poorly armed they were), but with Amani, they couldn't even claim that so they just pulled a sulky "we let you win" and tried to minimize it in the histories. @@AverageAlien She destroyed 5 Roman cities and killed everyone in them. Doesn't sound like a joke to me. Also, the army was not all women - that is false.
I see the shaming language in this thread. I'm not going to drag the book out, but i remember Gibbon in his first volume, making note of the Romans and 7 centuries of training and strategy, which would fall about this time if you count the pre-republic period. They were unstoppable. I have no mercy for Rome. They enslaved and forced the Brythonic peoples to dig the copper out of their own lands. At one point in history, there were as many slaves as free people in Rome. Gibbons also said that slavery allowed them to gain vast amounts of gold and metal for weapons and armor. I can sleep easier knowing that Alaric, the great Gothic king, sacked Rome twice and humbled that arrogant race. The Mistress of the Mediterranean drew the ire of many oppressed peoples.
Alaric was impressive in his feats, I agree. He brought Rome to its knees, which was poetic justice. The Romans, despite their superior technology & military might, were a cruel, violent, sadistic, corrupt & greedy society that only sought power by oppressing & stealing from others. That is the historical truth. Rome didn't deserve the mercy which Alaric showed it. He could have razed Rome to the ground but he didn't. Either way, his sack of Rome was the beginning of the end of the empire. By the way, Alaric, though considered a "germanic" Goth, was actually born in the Danube Delta, part of the old kingdom of the Getae. I believe that the Goths were related to the Getae, perhaps they were ethnic Getae themselves. There are numerous historical sources that confirm this relationship between the Goths & Getae. It's still of course a controversial subject, but one that is fascinating & worth researching.
There's a lot of ways the Britons could have won. The Romans only had so many troops in Britain. Provided they avoided pitched battles the Britons could have over time worn the Romans down. Denying the Romans food would be the best way. Like Obi-Wan said: there are alternatives to fighting.
@@joebloggs5318 it's too easy to assault and destroy three cityes without walls and soldiers and kill 70,000 innocent Roman civilians. Boudicca had 230,000 warriors and she lost against 10,000 Roman legionaires, so she isn't a especially a genious. She was a fool

Right. These shows always fantasize history just because she is woman, they must show her a true warrior charging into Romans and killing them in 1v1. I thought the Romans never break formations and they portray it like a skirmish where she is hecking everyone. I have read quite a few articles about her. What seemed right to my logic is that she sent men after men to the meat grinder of Roman lines and when she sensed defeat she left the field and later committed suicide in fear of getting caught and tortured.

Well, the Romans were an insanely good army, and they had the Roman Square. Barbarians like Boudica had no chance of penetrating the Roman Square.
a lot of that had to with the followers, her army got trapped trapped between their own supply line and the roman army, because civilians came out to watch the battle.
She destroyed the 9th Legion and then Suetonius came back with the 14th.

No, she just wanted revenge.
The Beast 5 to 1... Those numbers are roman exaggeration nothing more..
sean sammon ?

@@burningman1239 A whole slew of military heroes have lost, but are still celebrated (Leonidas, Hannibal, Spartacus, etc.).
If anyone would like me to explain why the romans first came into the iceini after the death of boudicca’s husband i’ll explain because this video skipped over why they went in
I would like to know.
It's been 4 years
Could you explain to me please and could you mention her husband’s name please
Her husband (the king) died and tried to protect his land & family by making his daughters joint heirs with emperor Nero. Believing that that would protect them from Roman predation and his daughters could govern in Nero’s place.
Of course, the romans had no respect for women so as far as they were concerned, it was now Nero’s kingdom/land and Boudicca and her daughters could get F’d.
(Also, her husband was called Prasutagus.)
And yet everyone has forgotten about Caractacus who led a 7-year guerilla campaign against the Romans.
The Brits have Boudicca, the French have Joan of Arc, the Angolans have Nzinga and the Indians have Rani Laxmi Bai 👍
And Brazilians have Maria Quitéria
Everyone must remember that Cassius and Tacitus were Greek and Romans, thus having very biased opinions on Boudicca and her strategies.
Also Tacitus was the son-in-law of the commander of the last battle, so he had a personal reason to talk it up. It's very unlikely the "army" was that large.
And this show is british, hence you don't hear them talk about boudiccas torturing and killing of thousands of civilians.

Though if she continued her tactics after that, we may see second Teutoburg.
Sorry, but the phalanx was mainly used by the greeks, at this time, no romans used a phalanx. They fought in a wedge formation

Boudica and Alister Crowley are my heroes.

Those savages didn't have any possibility against the superior Roman army
There's a lot of ways the Britons could have won. The Romans only had so many troops in Britain. Provided they avoided pitched battles the Britons could have over time worn the Romans down. Denying the Romans food would be the best way. Like Obi-Wan said: there are alternatives to fighting.
@@joebloggs5318 it's too easy to assault and destroy three cityes without walls and soldiers and kill 70,000 innocent Roman civilians. Boudicca had 230,000 warriors and she lost against 10,000 Roman legionaires, so she isn't a especially a genious. She was a fool
@john doe And I'm not Mexican ignorant
@john doe you said pendejo like if I was mexican .
@@sergius9571 Yeah like I said the Britons could have won in a lot of ways, not necessarily with Boudicca in charge. Sadly feminists really push Boudicca as some icon so there's this myth of her being a military genius. It takes little brains to throw a mob at your enemies and hope for the best.
Yes Queen
"Achieved the almost impossible"? She slaughtered defenseless cities and an untrained legion... they just get things out of context.
And by the way that " impossible" also caused the death of masses of British citizens because for some reason they thought that taking them close to battle On wagons was a good idea.
(And just to clarify, she fled the battle after her crushing defeat and committed suicide afterward, and did not die in the fight)
Shame this show got cancelled it was so good
"My ennemies will choke on their own blood!" - Rise of Kingdoms
wtf no cred to the 14 legion that defeted boudica. there was 5000 romans and 5000 allied gauls defending against boudicas 200 000 strong horde and only had between 200-500 in casualties. those was the real heroes
Vast overestimate. Some of her army were still in London, and the rest although they still outnumbered the Romans, were as often untrained women and children and the men farmers. They did well considering.
This Video is pure propaganda ... i highly recommend Historia Civilis TH-cam Video on this topic
Respect for this woman.
Купрат Хирешев
Not just a woman....
A Legend warrior as well...
Boudica the great
She slaughter thousands of Celts and destroyed cities without any defense, and also sent to die his army into battle without any tactic, she deserves no respect
Is the historical evidence for Boudicca killing her own people?
Сашук - Флагеллум Дей Yes, in the cities she sacked there were also britains, and obv she sent to death thousand of soldiers in a no-tactic battle
A women who burned people alive in the siege of Colchester
