So many ways to interpret this! I actually thought this was about his little sister..... Hey little sister shotgun. Shotgun wedding because she be in the family way and Billy was mad about it! Billy did an interview where he was asked about the meaning of the song, because of the rumors of its possible drug reference, 'White Wedding' being cocaine.
    Billy said the song was written for his little sister when she was getting married. His inspiration was because of his feeling that he was losing the position of 'Protector' and she had someone new she wanted to watch over her and keep her safe. Thus the line, "Who's your Superman".
    Everyone for decades have looked for a hidden meaning to this song, but it's pretty straight forward.

    • @SweetThing
      @SweetThing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Despite rumors to the contrary, this song is not about Idol's actual little sister. "Little sister" is slang for girlfriend. He is singing about a woman/girl he loves marrying someone else while he still loves her.
      Idol did have a sister who was getting married, but on an episode of VH1 Storytellers, he explained that his sister's wedding simply gave him the idea for the song. Like many of Idol's compositions, he started with the title and wrote the song from there. >>

    Wow, I am watching this 2 years after all the comments, and it seemed that everyone was arguing over the meaning behind the lyrics. Personally, I could care less why Billy wrote the song, or what was his influence. All that matters to me is that it is a great song and I appreciate his talent. Billy came in on the music scene causing people to do a double-take look at him, and their eyes never drifted away. I was in my early 20's then and I am in my early 60's now and I still get lost in his music when I listen to it today. Big thanks to Billy for keeping the blood pumping all these years! The "shotgun" in the song is actually a reference to the term, "shotgun wedding," i.e. a wedding done in haste because the girl got pregnant. The shotgun is metaphorical (in most cases), and it isn't aimed at the girl, it's aimed at the guy.

    • @ubermac85
      @ubermac85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Shotgun weddings were a real thing with actual shotguns. If a girl got pregnant, her family would literally hold the guy at gun point and force him to marry her. While it’s metaphorical these days, it was a literal thing back in the day.

    How about some more Cars? They had a great Live Aid set in 1984 or a great set in 78 called Rock Goes to College. Great songs on both. I know you’ve done Drive & Just What I Needed.
    You Might Think won MTV’s first video of the year award in 84, also.

    I love this debate in the comments! Is it about his sister's wedding, or did it just inspire him? But what's the real difference between inspiration and being literal if they go in the same direction? Either way, he doesn't sound happy about marriage! LOL!

    I'v heard so many stories about this one... Billy said on VH1 Story Tellers that his little sister's rushed wedding did inspire this song but then there are other stories. 🙄 So, who knows what it's really about.... I just LOVE the song and Billy!!😁😎

      yes... it was about his sister marrying a guy billy had no use for back in the day ...considering it was in my generation and at the time of the release of this song billy even came out and said it pertained to his sister

    Billy idol write this song when his sister was getting married. He wanted to know who this man was who is this superman that stole her heart. This has nothing to do with Billy Idol but wrote it to his sister.

  • @brt5273

    I wouldn't overthink it for story. Sometimes one song can come together from many influences and the singer may be third person narrator. Videos don't always follow a logical or complte storyline, but sometimes present related images just for artistic effect. A shotgun wedding generally pertains to an unwed pregnancy and the family forcing the marriage. Supposedly Billy had the idea for the song when his sister was getting married though it was not a shotgun wedding.

    I always love it when your shoulders start to go! BTW Billy Idol does a one hour show on Sirus Radio Next Wave channel 33. It's really good because it reflects the actual punk rock scene of the late 70's and 80's which I participated in, in NYC. I've never asked you to react to a song but thinking of his show reminds me of the song RISE bt Public Image Limited or PIL which is Johnny Lydon's band after the Sex Pistols, and PIL is still a band 40 years later. Rise addressed Apartheid in South Africa.

    Billy was a bundle of super nova energy! Hes also kept himself pretty good over the years & doesnt look much different now!
    Wanted to say, Jamal that i think you are the best reviewer of past & present GREAT music
    You have perfected just the right balance of music & your opinion.
    This is why you have the fans you have, & while i dig yr pal Jayvee & dont mind his much interrupted
    Opinions because hes so genuine & his honest enthusiasm is endering, but like, your the maestro.
    Your reactions are brilliant & i love how you often say you're still madly in love with yr wife & i know its a lovely honest statement.
    I think you pick such great songs
    Some are obscure, others are well known but all are favourites of mine.
    Being from England & my younger years co- incided with the best bands in the world like Led Zepp,
    Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Free,
    The Stones, Beatles, the origional Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Cream, Guns n Roses
    Then up to Dire Straits, INXS, Billy Idol, Eric Clapton, Then Lewis Capaldi, Evanescence, Adele, aw Man you really play some amazing stuff.
    I watched your very reverent listening to the wonderful Chris Cornells version ( & the best) of Nothing Compares 2 U, & you just let it play out till the end, knowing distinctly, it was one of those rare songs that you dont talk over, & im guessing all yr fans appreciated this & know your passion for great music is more than genuine, you really went up in my estimation because of this reaction to Chris's song.
    I salute you Sir, really & truely
    Keep on doing it just as you are
    You've found the perfect balance
    Also, i love your out & out ecstatic reactions when something really ticks all yr boxes & you get lost in the music
    You are a genuine, caring, empathic, honest & God fearing man. Don't go changing,
    You have all the right things going your way & you deserve all the loads & tons of success coming to you.
    Thank You
