How to: Install a Kill Switch on your car

  • How to install a kill switch to prevent your car from being stolen. This is useful when parking your car in "sketchy" neighborhood when you don't want somebody to steal the keys from you or break in and hot wire your car.
We install a kill switch to stop the fuel pump from running thereby stopping the car from starting. You can also take it from the ignition coil or other fuses that can prevent the car from running.
How to put a kill switch.
    Materials:
    - Switch
    - Spool of speaker wire
    - Wire Cutters
    - Soldering Iron(See alternative 1)
    - Fuse holder and Fuse
    - Drill with drill bits (See Alternative 2)
Step 1: Identify a place to put the switch. From talking to people and asking them to guess where the switch would be... Most of them said under the seat so, if i were you, I would avoid putting it there.
Step 2: Find the fuse that stops the car from running. I chose the fuel pump fuse because on Honda's it stop the complete fuel system.
Step 3: Break the fuse and solder a pair of wires to the contacts. check to make the fuse no longer work and place the fuse back from where you removed it.
Step 4: Place the switch where you are going to put it.
Step 5: Run the wire from the fuse, to the switch and solder it on.
Step 6: Check the switch works and once its operational, wire the fuse in series with on of the wires.
If you used speaker wire, at a point of your choosing, splits the two wires apart and cut into one of them. place the fuse holder on the wire you cut. Then just insert the fuse and your ready to go.
DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE THE FUSE. if you run your car unfused and a problem happens, theres a major fire hazard.
Wires directly connected to the fuse are quickly identified, and can be bypassed quickly as well... wink wink... So maybe you can find another way.... maybe looking behind the fuse box... but if you cant find another way then this will do.
The fuse holder can be of your choosing as long as the fuse you put is designed to burn at the same amperage. Here is a link to the fuse types that exist for automotive. www.bdfuses.com/images/automot...
Having trouble soldering the fuse? You can buy a fuse tap to make life a little easier. It removes the need to drill and solder the fuse. Find your fuse type in the link above and look for your fuse tap on ebay or at an automotive store.
Alternative 1) You could use twist the wires together and use electrical tape to protect and hold them. (Not the best way to do this)
Alternative 2) If you don't like the idea of drilling a hole in the fuse, you could connect the fuse across the battery which will blow the fuse. Do not do this around flammable liquids or gases.

Tip: Mine is wired with the cigarette lighter.. Since I don't smoke and don't let anyone to smoke in my car I unplugged the lighter and I use the negative of that circuit to complete the circuit for the relay.. If the lighter is not in place the car won't start.. 🤓🤓🤓
By the way I have 2 relays ones cut the fuel pump and the other one cut the ignition to the starter.. So it won't even crank if they figure that there is a wire there.. I still have another one going to the fuel pump so even if they crank it they won't go to far.. 😅

Not sure how I ended up here again. 🤷🏻‍♂️ (A year later).. Oh well.. 12Volts outlet or Cigarette lighter what ever.. You got the idea.. I don't smoke neither have any use for that thing.. I don't use iPhones anymore no need to recharge my phone during my day anyways I have a charger in the office if I need it. And a battery pack on my back pack for my laptop and cellphone too.. So yeah I don't have any use for that "Outlet" again my case not yours.. If you make a living by driving and your vehicle is your office my idea may not work for you.

this is like Level 1 beginner install. Level 2 would be removing the fuse panel and installing the switch on the circuit without any evidence that there is a switch installed. Level 3 would be to use a cellular or RF keyfob receiver instead of a radioshack switch.

Can we just skip to level 11 real quick? So, there are plenty of biocompatable polymers and manufacturing techniques to produce small flexible circuits. I propose a flat, flexible, sub cm^2 passive LC tank circuit laminated into an impermiable, flexible biopolymer and dermally implanted in a non irritating place in the hand. Then you need to install a solenoid in the car handle which is driven at some lower fraction of the resonant frequency of the implant LC tank and a pick up coil that outputs to a band pass filter wich is tuned to pass only the frequency of the implanted LC but reject the driver coil frequency. That way when you put your hand into the driver coils field, the implanted LC will oscillate as its resonant frequency and this will be picked up in the pickup coil, passed by the tuned band pass and from there, it can be detected by a microcontroller which engages a few relays which enable the fuel pump or anything else you want. This may sound rediculous to some but just watch a few videos on channels like Applied Sience or The Thought Emporium, or Cody's Lab to see what people can accomplish in a garage. The fact that you could custom tailor the system would make it virtually unhackable except through brute force.
On the other hand you could just get full coverage.

Ollie Oak I can definitly see your point of view. Although it may not take a genius to figure out how to bypass the switch, it does take work and time (which is critical when stealing a car). This in adition to turning your wheels in a direction that makes it difficult to tow, makes the car less desirable to the thief. As I said in the video, if your car is targeted and sombody really wants it, then consider it gone. Quite frankly, if its stock or a common after market alarm, there will always be a way to steal it. Your also correct about it being a fuse to relays. Thanks for your input! Feel free to follow up! I love to hear opinions. Especially from people who have experience in this.

Assuming that a thief will be a completely unprepared amateur that has only like 3 minutes to get into the car and start it is really stupid, esp. after realizing that there are cases, even videos of those cases where thieves are going thru process of stealing a car for long tenths of minutes, sometimes even up to a whole hour, in extreme cases where no-ones at home even for long couple of hours no problem.. plenty of time for troubleshooting in that case

    1. Make sure your wire can handle more than the fuse is rated for.
    2. Fuse box is not a good place to run your wires from. In this case, the best solution would be to run it from the fuel pump.
    3. Hide the switch somewhere in passenger side. The first place someone would look for a killswitch is under a seat. I would hide it in plain sight, disguised as fog light or window heating switch for example.
    4. Use shrink tubes or terminal connectors in all car related electronic works. Vibrations will losen up electrical tape (eventually).

Mount the switch in the trunk. And I wouldn't use the fuel pump I'd use the starter relay. You can also JBweld the fuse tap into the fuse panel that way they can't remove it without a tool if they happen to pull the fuse panel cover.

Just wire to your fog light switch or radio knob, (*never to anything hanging out or to your fuse box or panel, from the switch itself*) or a fuel pump shut off somewhere outside, under the wheel well...thieves dont sit there trying all the differing switches or knobs...but they will drag the hand in obvious kill switch locations (humans are lazy, stereo installers being easily predictable, because of cost, repetition, etc locations are routine) I have mine paired to my fog lights, (*not your headlights*) and Ive had 4 88-93 Fox 5.0 Ponies over the last 20yrs in a high car theft location and literally have video up, of me laughing at people trying to steal one, the only way to get it is to have it towed. As a mechanic the first place you look if the car doesn't start is the fuse box. You'll see the fuse that was tapped into. All you'd have to do is put a bit of wire in there.
The fuse you used isn't for the fuel pump. It was for the fuel injector and fuel pump relays.

This is a quick and cheap kill switch. I also have my wires hidden and fuse box locked just to make it more annoying for a thief. I also have a throttle control and set it to max slowness when I park it so if they do manage to take it, it won't be fun.

Install two 1" +/- pieces of heat shrink tubing before soldering over the wires and allow enough clearance for soldering the joints after soldering slide heat shrink tubing over soldered areas and use a hair dryer or other heat source to shrink the insulating tubing over the entire connections. Next, never try to hold anything with your fingers when attempting to drill holes as you can seriously injure yourself when the drill bit grabs and turns the material by then it is to late to release the part. OUCH! Other than lack of experience in these areas a great well thought out video. Thanks

i'm kinda like a mad scientist experimenting on my truck. Currently, I run a self made (DIY) HHO Generator fashioned inside a comparable sized milk crate in my truck bed (outside in case of 'H-Bomb' *BOOM* I got a safe place for all the glass from the pickle jar to go but my redundant safeguard is in the thermodynamics of the stator vacuum pressure.) with its tube going under my cab to the engine compartment, then to a smaller pickle jar that fits perfect in the area in front of the brake booster on the 'cool side of the engine' with one hose in from the crate in my truck bed and one hose out to my air intake right before my throttle body.. Your video gives me the idea of how to make an on/off (I/O) switch for my fuel pump. Just what I need to confirm my truck can run without gasoline except for when starting up. I mean, to shut off the fuel pump and run my engine completely off of Hydrogen. I'm harnessing the forces of nature here bro and you'll be the first one to know if it works after I shut off the fuel pump with your switch. Thanks amigo and nice looking girlfriend you got helping you out. Respect. @pouleichel426 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

take out the fuse with the wire and plug in a new one and we are good to go. 10 sek tops. Yoy shoud have cut the wire behind the fuse box and put the wire there, that would be harder to se and fix.

when you drill the fuse were you hitting the metal part of the fuse or just the plastic.

Do you need to add in that extra fuse? I understand you do it so you don't have to redo the fuse that you rigged up again but is it necessary for any reason??

i just did the same thing for my radio cause it wouldnt turn off with the truck.i did not add the extra fuse so i was wondering what would happen if i didnt have the extra fuse and if it failed would it do any real bad damage .btw i have it hooked up to a 20 amp toggle switch ,same amps as the fuse needed to run my radio just to add that in.

I recommend having two switches in series instead of one switch. One switch on the dashboard and the other one wherever you prefer to have.

I did this to the two fuses in the boot of my clk 230 cabrio. 1 was for the rear windows and the other was for the electric roof module the VDO control box. I had to break the circuit in these two only for a couple of seconds every time my cabrio developed an intermitent fault with the roof module. My windows , mirrors , rear head rests and roof would all stop working. The red light on the roof switch would stay on and the only way to fix it was to remove the negative lead of the battery for a couple of seconds and put it back on.This would reset the module and everything worked again. I know this is a crude fix but a new module was a couple of hundred quid. I just ran 2 pairs of wires into the front of the car and. Put a couple of switches, 1 on each pair. I know what your thinking but it works. Saves me keep geting out the car usually at least once every couple of days and down powering the whole car. Specially the ECU.

Not trolling here, but you just gave the viewers (and average thief) the 411 on where you installed the kill switch on your car. Guess where they will be looking after they see your tutorial? Don’t get me wrong, it was a good tutorial, I really enjoyed it. I would just not post it for everyone to see where I installed a kill switch. The goal to stall thief for as long as possible, so they give up and move on to the next car without one, because like you said, no car is impossible to steal. However, you can make it a pain for them to do so. I however have the best kill switch on my cars, it’s called a 45 ACP deterrent switch. Man, It works miracles.

I have a double din deck and amp and subs I got it installed a long as time ago now my deck automatically turns on when the car is started. There is no button to power it off its a pioneer deck also my amp is always on when the car is on... I wanted to put a switch to power it off and on when I'm not using it both of them..
    Tips ?

    • @cmacia06
      @cmacia06  9 ปีที่แล้ว

It is normal operation to turn on when the vehicle to turn on but you would rather have manual control over this you can do the following. There is a wire on the radio and amplifier labled as remote or signal. Cut that wire and run a new one that goes to a switch, then connect that switch to a +12v always on wire. The current the the remote wire is normally very low so dont worry to much about high currents. You maybe want to fuse that wire for safety.

Hi there. I have the same car. It has 2 issues that disturb me, and I want to solve them somehow. Would you help me?
-1. That buzzer alarm sound just disturbs me a lot. I don't want to remove it totally but just to reduce the buzzing volume it makes. Maybe cover it with some plastic tape to block the sound a bit. I couldn't locate the buzzer. Where is the buzzer on this car..?
-2. From time to time my kids just cannot close the doors so good. The door is open when the car is running. It indicates with light that the door actually is not completely closed and locked on the dashboard, but it does not buzz signal. I would like to set a buzzing signal for open doors as the car runs. Is there any way to set the buzzer to signal when the doors open when the car runs?
    Thanks...

Hello, I have a drain that I was able to trace to some wires (a whole bunch of wires) on a clip that goes into my fuse box. I've been unplugging the clip so the battery won't drain. My question is when you turn the switch off does it kill all power which in my case I need to stop my drain. Please let me know, thanks.

    • @cmacia06
      @cmacia06  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+H. Jones If it's a clip with a whole bunch of wire then this won't work. If you can trace it a fuse then it might.
