i think involving the kids into household chores is a major step to make them indepentent. they will not like it but they will have a set of skills that will help them when they move out. My mother teached my 4 older brothers and me how to cook, wash, iron our clothes and how to properly clean a huge amount of different surfaces. She never passed on all the work on us, everyone got his chore and there was nothing we had to do that she refused to do herself.

while on south east asia [like Philippines], kids are taught like this,
      not only out of courtesy,
but as a form of responsibility.

we are introduced to this kind of mentality....

@@Lulu.2013.no you don’t. Put detergent powder in the pre wash section. People have been ignoring this for ages thanks to detergent pods which are worse since they don’t allow the pre wash unless you put powder in separately.

    • @DrewArdner
      @DrewArdner 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Lulu.2013. patently untrue. The heat at which a dishwasher sprays water is guaranteed to kill any bacteria, and the pressure the water is sprayed with is enough to knock off food particles. Use detergent, making sure to use the right amount, and not forgetting to add some to the pre-wash basin (or into the machine if you don’t have a pre-wash basin) and you will have no issues. Watch Technologyconnections videos on Dishwashers.
It’s also a myth that you use more water in a dishwasher than hand washing. A dishwasher tends to recycle the water for a long time, refilling only when switching from prewash to main wash. On average, a dishwasher can get by with as little as 2 to as much as 7 gallons of water for the whole cycle. A standard flow rate of 1.25 gallons per minute from the sink will use more water in just 7 minutes of run time than the dishwasher would for its entire cycle if it used its maximum water capacity.
The human skin just cannot handle the temps it requires to _actually_ sanitize dishes. You would burn your skin off if you tried to wash your dishes by hand in that water.

My asian household also had the same mentality where washing dishes created “less lazy kids”, but I’m here to talk about how much water you’re using hand washing them compared to just using a dishwasher. A lot of people are also missing the fact that many people don’t wash dishes with hot water, which is what you’re supposed to do in order to remove more bacteria from the plates. I know some people have frights about bacteria in the dishwasher from the steam, but as long as you open the washer door when you’re done with the cycle and do a weekly cleaning cycle, you’re saving a lot from your water bill. 😂😂

It still boggles my mind that people don't wash things with hot water. Hotter temperatures help remove oils and fatty substances that no amount of sanitization will do. Really goes to show that just because you force kids to do something, it doesn't mean they'll learn from it.
The part about saving water is also very true. My dad always complains about wasting water, but he's the one creating a miniature bubble bath in the kitchen sink every night.

What washing by hand does better: Remove solids.
What dishwasher does better: Heat kills bacteria.
How to handle dishes like a god:
Scrub with soapy sponge, put straight in dishwasher, make dishwasher RINSE only, with hottest setting. Open dishwasher door when cycle done in 5 minutes. Steamy dishes dry spotless in 5 more minutes.

I moved into my sorority sister’s condo for my second year of college. She’s of Chinese descent, and it was a trip to hear her mix Cantonese and Southern slang on her phone calls with her mom. At her request, we sat down together in that first week to discuss pet peeves. She told me she wouldn’t be using the dishwasher because she found that hand-washing them was “therapeutic.” I replied, “okay, well…I’ll definitely be using it.” I think she lasted a good month, before finding that convenience outweighed the perceived “therapy.”

THIS! OMG. My husband was this person minus the therapy reason 😂 In our first apartment his reason was not believing it will do a good job. When we moved to our second place it had a Bosch dishwasher that was 10 years old. IT. IS. AWSM. I got a severe case of dyshydrotic eczema. Skin was literraly off my fingers. I was 90% disabled. I couldnt even run my fingers through my hair. Couldnt hold a spoon or a warm piece of toast no matter how many band aid, creams and gauze I applied. I told hubby I’m using the dishwasher now. Got some dishpods and have been using it since 3 years now without any issues.
I have a mild case of OCD where I cannot leave a single spoon dirty. I would wake up at 2 am to scrub spoons in the kitchen. I was also living in a joint family and was the dishwasher there. A relative of mine abused my kind side and would explode a bomb of dishes in the kitchen for me. My poor mother in law had to put up with that abuse for years that’s why I took over for her to give her a break during my month long visits. That was the time I developed eczema all over till my elbows. I remember wrapping my hands in plastic seran wrap, cloth and then putting on gloves to go to the dishes.
And that’s the story of my introduction to dishwashers 😂

Dishwashers are actually better at cleaning dishes than hand washing, and they use less water and are still less wasteful counting the energy consumption. The only reason to hand wash is if you want it done fast, but other than that humans create so many micro abrasions and small fractures in our plates it's a miracle everyone in a first world country doesn't prefer them.

They 100% do NOT do a better job, and while they use less water (because the rinse cycle reuses the dirtt water from the wash cycle, yuck) they have to use much stronger chemicals to replace the scrubbing action (thays why there is a seperate soap for dishwashers and they dont just use dish soap) so they are way worse for the environment.
I think they are fine for plates/bowls and silverwear if you run it immediately after eating. But then you are running the washer for what? 4 plates and 4 forks most nights? Not worth it. Pots and pans and cutting boards require thorough scrubbing the get clean.

Just don't dish-wash cups with gold/metal decoration, nor wooden things (including knives with wooden handles), as it ruins them over time (with differences noticeable even after just like 2 washes).
Hand-washing won't _always_ cause more damage. Even for things that don't fall into those two categories. It depends how gentle you are.

For anyone whose parents don't believe in dishwashers, maybe this will help:
    - they lower water bills versus washing by hand, especially if high efficiency, but old ones, too
    - they kill more germs than washing by hand even when they leave bits because they reach a much higher temperature and skin holds a lot of bacteria
    - they save you time to study for school, learn to cook, and practice your instrument 🤭
They won't protect delicate old china, but some new china uses processes that make the designs dishwasher safe. You can still wash delicates by hand. Best luck!!

it's because in Asia we don't use washing machines, even in rich neighborhoods it's just not a common thing. Rich people just hire people to wash the dishes lol

As an Asian, i always thought because of the population density....there is no enough room for dish washer.
Our kitchen is normally just one narrow aisle.

In my family we usually wash off the majority of the bigger food chucks and stains of first before letting the washer get the rest, just in case it can’t get everything.

Many people do this. I don't know wht. This is a waste of time of time and energy. Remove chunks of food, yes, but after that just throw them in dirty and they will come out clean.

Well.... I have a top of the line, heavy duty, stainless steel pan that can take any punishment you bring and comes with a no questions asked, lifetime guarantee. That beast of kitchenwear came with two instructions, the only things they warned against: 1- do not submerge in cold water while hot and 2- do not wash in dishwasher.
So... your mom knows what's up.

I’m Indian, this is true. My parents actually were talking about how Indian kids do less housework than American kids. Fortunately for me (i think?) I do wash dishes and cook my own food throughout the day because honestly I just like getting the work done and knowing I did something useful that day lol-
