If you like this story, see if you can find the 2007 movie "The Man From Earth". Its a small budget indie film but it is amazing if you like dramas with dialog. Basically, one of the characters is 14 thousand years old and lives as a college professor. When every 20 years or so, his coworkers start noticing he doesn't age, he moves on to another life. Well worth watching.
Great movie indeed! Though I usually say, it is a movie about a man claiming to be 14 thousand years old to see if his professor college's can disprove his claim.
That reminds me of part of The Weapons Shops of Ishtar, which has it that the Weapons Shops were set up by the only truly immortal man. He regulates the behaviour of his company by joining it as a junior member, gradually advancing to the top, then adjusting everything which has changed so that it matches his eternal vision for his company, and after a while he "retires" due to age, allows enough time so that he won't be recognised, then starts the cycle all over again.
It's an interesting concept, especially as the author avoided going the angst route. I don't know if I would be that interesting and interested for a millennium, much less six billion years, but I'd like to have a go at it. Many thanks, Agro.
I doubt the human mind could hold 6b years of memories, at some point you would forget almost everything you've done and did it again, so you would never run out of things to refresh your memory about.
Well he must be very lucky that in the 6 billion years, he didn't have any catastrophic accident. I wish i could live long enough to see if we ever make contact with alien life or are we the first and live long enough to see other civilizations arise.
On top of all the other warnings of immortality, there's also the following risk: Eventually you will be on a starship that has a catastrophic failure and it falls into a gas giant or a star or a blackhole. And there you are stuck, waiting for the heat death of the universe.
The way the alien was awed at him remembering Earth along with the six billion years timeline might imply most of the alien species descends from humans. But if there are still "humans" around, maybe that means other humans took the same gene editing procedure and are also immortals, or maybe there are still some species calling themselves "humans" but none of them can agree who are the original humans anymore (which would be funny because that would mean they all are)
Great story; Excellent narration! Immortality and the technology to explore Galaxies! Now that is an explorers dream!!!

I love that movie. Always forget the name though.

seen it. Interesting premise and interesting story. Not sure it needed a sequel.
@@melkiorwiseman5234 Thats going on my list :) Thanks!
He'll even get to experience of the entropic death of the universe.
And what then?
@@merlinathrawes746 A long wait until the next "Big Bang"? Hell, I don't know.

It might get a bit boring after a few centuries if limited to one planet. It takes a lot longer with interstellar then intergalactic travel.

To some of us the end of living holds no attraction. There really is so much to see and new People to meet.
Both a blessing and a curse.
Great story thank you writer and squirrel

Who says that even the heat death of the universe would kill him?
@@merlinathrawes746 Even if it doesn't kill him, there will be literally nothing to do. Except wait for another universe to spawn, if it even can.
@@anathardayaldar But that would be amazing to see. And, think of the uplifting opportunities once the new universe reaches abiogenesis!
With a capital B! With that amount of time, you could make your own version of the Akoshic Library.
