    One thing that did not really work on the CB450, was the electric starter. In front of the motor, with a chain connected to the crankshaft.
    I had several engine failures, caused by the pinion on the crankshaft. The screws on it came loose, and ruined the whole motor.
    You should either remove the chain, and the pinion attached to it, thats what i did, or use glue to fix that screws...

    I had two of them (in succession) in my late teens. The were probably late 60s models - drum brakes and no chrome on the tanks.
    I loved the sound and excellent power for a 450.
    There were a few issues though :- I found to my surprise that if you maxed it out (indicated 115 mph) and then tried to stop in a hurry, the brakes would fade to nothing by the time you got down to 60. Que frantic down changes and the back wheel skipping around. Very exciting.
    It was also prone to getting a speed wobble when it was in the mood.
    Also the roller big end bearings were not durable - had to change cranks several times, but maybe because it spent most of its time at or sometimes over the red line.
    But I would still love to have one now.

    Honda built these with intentions of racing it against mid weight british bikes in road racing. That valve design allowed the engines to run higher revs than other bikes in the period..
    I did a restomod on one of these. I found charging system and super stiff rear shocks were biggest issues that made these the underdogs. They race these a lot in Japan.

Always fished broken bits of cam drive sprocket dampening rings out of centrifugal oil filter . But oh so many great times wish I had room in the garage for another one.

    I remember the very moment I became addicted back when I was 16 and gas was 10 cents a gallon, sitting on the back of my best friends 90cc Suzuki scrambler as we accelerated from the five way lights at the center of our downtown, population 15 thousand, how the piston hammered up my spine, omg I really, really want one.
    So, luck was with me and next summer I got a job at Expo'67 and with the money left over after buying that gorgeous white electric guitar (a piece of shit that shredded my poor finger tips and got me fired from the nascent band) I bought the most CCs I could afford (not quite, I disdained the 350 Jawa probably 'cuz of its communist connections). It was a 1967 Honda CB175, you know, the one with that ridiculous pressed steel frame. I rode it hard (like it was a scrambler (oh but it most definitely was not)) right into the start of winter but stopped when I had to put my feet down to stop me falling over as we pulled a full 360 in only one inch of snow on the smooth asphalt.
    It was probably the next summer and our motorcycle 'gang' had driven to the beach (ha ha, my bike was one of the largest). Night had fallen and as we lay among the dunes drinking beer and smoking reefer a full lunar eclipse bathed the whole scene surrealistically red. After it passed we walked out onto the flat hard sandy beach and saw some guy rapidly approaching an a huge gigantic bike. That was the first time I saw a 450 (just like the one above) and miracle of miracles somehow he let me take it for a spin. Oh yes, I was immensely impressed. All I did was turn the handle and the rear wheel turned faster than the sand could handle and sprayed the crowd as I took off. It was so much more than the 175 that had to be revved up very high before I could pop a wheely. Those were the good old days.

    Best to run the timing light off it's own 12v source.

    • @GettingNervous
      @GettingNervous 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain why? The 12V power is only for the operation of the timing light (xenon tube) and do not affect the result even when the power source is an external power source.

    • @tmackinator
      @tmackinator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GettingNervous It is not absolutely mandatory to use a separate power source but it is recommended as it is possible for AC pulses in the the bikes wiring to influence the timing light when powered by the machines battery. The separate battery is not affected by this. Many service manuals recommend this step.

    Thanks for the video! I’d love to see how you replace the clutch cable once the new one arrives. I tried replacing mine on my 450 but have troubles with the little join clutch (the little part that’s on the cable and goes between crankcase cover and motor. ) can’t seem to get it off the old cable.

    Hi Taylor, I’ve heard that these bikes (CB750, 500, 550, 400) that are esentially the same have charging problems when they run a electronic ignition, and this is because their alternator does not generate enough power for the additional energy that it demands. I personally own a CB750 K5 with electronic ignition and, precisely, this is my problem if I do not ride the bike at more than 3.5Krpm, but sometimes in the traffic this is not possible and at the next try electronic starter does not run the bike. I need to use the kick starter. Have you experienced something like this?

    I rode a CB 400'and loved it. That whole series of CB's were great bikes! But I like the 4 cyl versions better than the twins.
