My Polish mother used to do her version of potato pancakes. No onions and they came out fairly dense and kinda greyish in colour. We ateb them as more of a dessert than a savory main course, served with apple sauce, jam or just sprinkled with sugar. Probably unhealthy as hell with all the soaked up oil and carbs, but damm, they were tasty AF.

I also can't tell you the exact calories maybe someone else can, I just can give you my diet tips and how I easily lost 20 pounds. I just started to cook more healthy all in all, like if you would have gluten, and lactose allergies, it really makes you think what you buy. Also, of course, don't fry stuff, but oils is a healthy fat if not heated too much so a little bit high-quality oil won't harm your diet. But it all comes down to the ingredients you choose to take.

It was my first time cooking any Korean dish and being a vegetarian, this could be the easiest thing I could have tried making at home. It came out to be so so good.
We have those pancakes in Estonia as well. My grandmother used to cook these for me when I was little and visited her over summer holiday. I stayed for weeks. And this was my favorite dish. I could eat those potato cakes (this is how we called them), until I started to feel physically ill and grandmother made my water with soda, because my stomach ached from overeating. But I loved them so much!! Today, 30 years later, my father cooks these for me when I visit him. I still love them. Dish from my childhood.
"I could eat those potato cakes (this is how we called them), until I started to feel physically ill..." Cute! : ) Thanks for telling the story about your grandmother's potato pancake. It's cool how people from different countries all make similar potato pancakes. Food really does bring back good memories.
Maangchi, my Russian Grandma makes potato pancakes that look just like this! The biggest difference is they are not chewy, and are made smaller, just a few inches in diameter. She put in the food processor raw potato, onion, salt and pepper then cooked just like you did. We ate them with cottage cheese only, never applesauce like a lot of our other Eastern European neighbors. I've been craving potato pancakes and since I LOVE Korean food and your recipes are the best, I am going to make these next time :D
Thank you very much ma'am , love you the way you explain, we are vegetarian ,so l see only that ,l made kimchi after seeing your video , everyone in my family liked it , thankyou.
We have freshly harvested potatoes from our backyard and after watching this video, I made this yummy potato pancake. I used corn starch because I don't have potato starch and it turned out really delicious! Thanks, Maangchi! Watching your videos is relaxing!
Good to know because for some reason on my shopping list I wrote potato flour.. lol Apparently not a substitute. Now I’m searching for recipes that use potato flour!
This recipe reminds me of Polish potato pancakes, we also mix potatoes with onions and starch or flour and then fry on some oil. The only difference is the topping - instead of spicy sauce we use one of these: warm greaves or goulash, or for some with sweet tooth just sprinkling a sugar :)
In Korean cusine, you can see a lot of similarity with east Europe and central Asia. For instance, Yookgejang(Spicy beef stew) is almost same with goulash, lots of meat & bone simmering stew, Sundae(similiar with blood sausage) etc.. It's because our ancestor particularly who had built mornachies in North-east Asia and Korean pennninsular shared similar ethnic back ground with nomads who dominated central Asia and eastern Europe(representatively Huns).
Seriously DO NOT watch these videos if you're hungry and do not have access to food or a kitchen. You'll just end up being FREAKEN ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED IM SO MAD I WANT TO EAT SOME WHY

It's evening here in India. Was feeling hungry yet lazy and then got this perfectly simple recipe. I didn't make the spicy sauce, so added some black pepper, green chilli, paprika and finely chopped garlic to the mixture. Turned out great and just realised the numerous variations that can be made of this pancake. 😊
We have almost the same food in Hungary. Grated potatoes mix with a bit of flower and 1 egg+salt. Onion is optional. You fry half of a pen size portions in oil. Dry oil it with paper, eat it like that or with sour cream.
It's funny how many different cultures have basically the same recipe for potato pancakes. My Polish father would use plain flour and add a bit of egg to bind the mixture, but it's pretty much the same. Food of the gods!

Thank you for this beautiful vegan, gluten free recipe! I'm going to make this for my family on Christmas morning.
We have freshly harvested potatoes from our backyard and after watching this video, I made this yummy potato pancake. I used corn starch because I don't have potato starch and it turned out really delicious! Thanks, Maangchi! Watching your videos is relaxing!
Sounds great!
Good to know because for some reason on my shopping list I wrote potato flour.. lol Apparently not a substitute. Now I’m searching for recipes that use potato flour!
When she put on the sunglasses I knew that she was an icon
YES
@@redtobertshateshandles The sunglasses that she chose made her into a fashion icon. Obviously you didn't pick up on this. :/
Neee 😂💜💛
This recipe reminds me of Polish potato pancakes, we also mix potatoes with onions and starch or flour and then fry on some oil. The only difference is the topping - instead of spicy sauce we use one of these: warm greaves or goulash, or for some with sweet tooth just sprinkling a sugar :)
Interesting!
😊 akurat dziś robię na obiad nasze placki ziemniaczane 😂 i trafiłam na ten filmik. Nie sądziłam, że azjaci znają tę potrawę.
Seriously DO NOT watch these videos if you're hungry and do not have access to food or a kitchen. You'll just end up being FREAKEN ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED IM SO MAD I WANT TO EAT SOME WHY

In all honesty , I love your channel! Great recipes and your awesome personality!

Hahahaha
Or "I feel crunchy on the bottom" haha
It's evening here in India. Was feeling hungry yet lazy and then got this perfectly simple recipe. I didn't make the spicy sauce, so added some black pepper, green chilli, paprika and finely chopped garlic to the mixture. Turned out great and just realised the numerous variations that can be made of this pancake. 😊
I love how she flips the pancake so easily and effortlessly!🤣
mine would fly onto the floor if i tried that!
That was only the impossible thing she did here😂. I will never try it cz I knw what will happen
Cool! Where I live we call it mock fish
True.. we make aloo paranta... called potato pancake
Me flipping the pancake, whoosh, pancake fell on floor, "there you go!" 😃
I wanna learn to flip so bad! With a spatula I always end up only getting half flipped and the rest folds over or breaks
Ouch... 🤦🏻♀️
I personally would not even try it in my dreams...
@TigerEyes just practice youll get it i was doing eggs once OMG they landed all over the stove. I own a food wagon in Ontario Canada...well i said to myself NOWAY WAS THIS FLIPPING THING GONNA GET ME.. A few more times practicing(not with eggs tho😂) and Walla got it! If you dont succeed PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Good luck AND have fun. Have a Blessed Day Cheers☕
Oooops, 😅😅😅😅
In reality I want to tell that I had gone Himachal Pradesh in India to meet my grandma and I made this recipe and she loved it....It's really awesome....

Hello Maangchi, this is my first time to leave you my comment here! It is wonderful to know you through youtube channel. I have tried this recipe, my mum (80 yrs old) & dad (86 yrs old) both said very yummy! Thank you for sharing simple and delicious food with us. Hope you and your family stay safe and healthy during this period of time while the whole world is fighting for COVID 19.

Mangchi is such a sweet lady. It pains my heart to see racist attacks on East Asians and South East Asians or anyone looking like these ethnicities. A sincere appeal to all of Mangchi's fans and subscribers, if you love Korean food or Asian food in general, please spread the message and support Asians during these difficult times. Each and every act of kindness and love matters. Stay safe and take care Mangchi. ❤
this is so sweet, thank you for supporting us. stay safe 💘
Awwww how sweet. BTW the strong do not bother with haters. We just cruise along to our Asian channel and language with our Asian siblings, a loss for haters. ha HA hA
Those racists and haters let them go to "H".. Who cares for such people??. We are here for Mangchi..
Thank you for your support.
It’s very difficult to see hateful remarks against entire races, when the evil comes from just a small group.
I made this today! This is the second time I've tried your recipe. (The first was bibimbap.) You are incredibly adorable and your recipes are very easy to follow. Love from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩

We also have a similar thing in Hungary, it has many names depends on that in which region you are. I call it tócsni [toːtʃni]. We also eat it salty and sweet too. I like it with lots of black pepper in the batter and it's good to top it with a mixture of garlic, sour cream and salt at the end.

I was a notoriously picky eater as a kid & refused to eat potato. So my grandmother used our leftover potato, onion powder, salt & pepper to make me a potato pancake. I loved it & throughout my life she was always so proud she’d found a way to get me to eat it. I miss her so much ❤️ I also just remembered she called it “padayda” 😂
