- In this episode we're traveling to the remote volcanic island of Hachijo to explore the abandoned Royal Hotel. The hotel opened in the 1960's during the island's first tourism boom, and shut down permanently in 2006 after Japanese tourists started choosing international destinations over domestic ones.

Everytime I watch these videos, I always think about the shattered dreams of the person who owned these magnificent buildings.

Not always shattered dreams! Some people lived out their dreams in these places until they moved on in life or passed away.
I mean, it was almost definitely owned by rich business people whose dreams were for the hotel to make them even more money.

It’s so crazy how some parts still seem almost pristine, whilst other parts are completely junked up with mold and deterioration.
Roof leaking badly will cause this deterioration
Ikr! It's amazing. If there's no roof leaking and such I bet the place would look the same as before always.
@@predilectionist Yeah the roof, once it is compromised the rest of the building quickly deteriorates. but if the roof is taken care of the building would look pristine for centuries.

Also, he says the rooms above look better so there’s slight chances of the roof collapsing in, probably the windows shattered
I could be wrong but this very easily could be damage caused by the tsunami that hit Japan...in which case the reason only the bottom off the walls, furniture, floors etc are damaged and molding from being submerged in 7 feet of water. Japan got messed up from that tsunami.

...To be fair, Hachijo island is a remote place (1h from Tokyo by plane, or nearly half a day by ship) with not so many population and fairly small in size. No teenagers trying to look cool is gonna come down here to spray paint or trash the place.
You guys need to invest in some really good masks for exploring these abandoned places with water damage. I saw several instances of black mold and if it’s on the wall, the spores are in the air and now in your lungs. You can become seriously ill if not die from that fellas.
Great videos though. Your speed is perfect and narrative informative and not over done. Impressed with your technique.
Bill Cordell mold only affects those with a weak immune system or those who are allergic.

@@waltersobchak7275 Depends on the person. I had black mold in my laundry because of an old washing machine that was never cleaned properly and I felt like death for months before figuring out what it was, because I have an allergic reaction to it.
@@HUNGRYHUSKY it’s not something that is detrimental in the long run. Had similar experience with it. When I wasn’t around it, it cleared right up. These people aren’t living with it only exposed a short time if at all.

Interesting to think, if man suddenly vanished from the earth, every building would look like this all over the world.
Casey Lance it’s pretty incredible. The book “The World Without Us” by Alan Weisman describes in detail exactly what happens step by step as the world reclaims our modern structures, assuming humans vanished on the day prior to page one. His research and scientific understanding of the processes make it a more than fascinating read, if you’re at all interested.

The one side is far more decayed because the island was hit with a typhoon around the time the hotel closed and many of the windows on that side were facing the storm and were damaged - allowing the elements into the rooms. The water then dripped through the floor on that side of the building so that even the rooms with intact windows got water damage and decay. Also, the non decayed side gets much more direct sunlight - keeping the rooms warmer and dryer.

@@makeuplover6852 it's actually not a ghost island. easy google shows that there are 7000 plus residents on it as of 2018 and there is even an airport on the island with daily flights from tokyo haneda airport. Quite a distance from tokyo but definitely not a ghost island.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels that way. I only recently started watching because I was worried it would be ghost stories and jump scares. I’m so glad it isn’t.
Their videos and voices are very calm/calming and they can be pretty grounding in anxiety attacks by helping you calm down and then see that where you are is safer relatively

I think some of the reason is the Japanese are terrified of the 'justice' system they have there.
99.8% conviction rate. You heard that right, statistically 998 people out of 1000 will be charged with crimes in Japan if they're arrested. Yeah we should totally follow the fascist, authoritarian state of Japan that still forces people into hard labor after being imprisoned for something they might not have even committed. Even if you're one of the lucky 2 that don't get charged, the population will see you as a degenerate. You got arrested for a reason, and you got off because you were lucky. That's how Japan views crimes.
So basically 1000/1000 people arrested in Japan are fucked.

Your bias is colouring what you are seeing. I see a lobby with chandeliers and missing chandeliers. Black holes with hanging chains where the decorative ceiling rose has been ripped out when somebody helped themselves to a chandelier

I was walking through a Kyoto Market with 1000s of people on the street and saw lost woman's purse laying on the side walk, open, showing money, credit cards, chain purse, etc. People just looked down at it and walked on by.

They did go to a abandoned park in Japan, the Nara Dreamland, in a moment of the recording they notice a group of people breaking the abandone toys and arcade, so vandalism exist everywhere is just occur less in some county.

3 things I would always wear if I explored like this: face mask for toxic particles, gloves for old and dirty surfaces and clothes that covered exposed skin. Maybe I'm over sensitive :P

Zach RBB yeah mold is not the only worry though. These guys encounter chipping lead paint and possibly even asbestos, among other things.

It would be tough to bring legit respirators because I’m sure airports check their luggage and that would be suspicious
Bringing quality respirators through customs raises flags.
I mean, I’m sure a store somewhere there would sell respirators. That would get around the “bringing respirators through customs” issue.
They do when they’re in the US....but would raise serious concerns to customs if they tried to bring respirators with them into Asia

There can be cancer and serious lifetime lung disease, cancer maybe only from long or repetitive exposure but lung disease can come after being exposed to some sorts of mold just once. There is more in the air and in the matresses etc than meets the eye... And there are some things you really don't want to breathe in, grown undisturbed over such a large time.
Damn this was the most beautiful exploration ya'll have ever done. So peaceful and calm. I love seeing no vandalism and just having nature take over. Seems like the seaside windows and ceiling were knocked out from strong winds possibly. I was kind of sad there was no random chair in the middle of a room. #Perfect
Late to add, but no Christmas decorations. I attribute it to the cultural differences.
The pristine rooms with untouched furniture were a truly amazing find, especially with the horribly decayed rooms so close by in contrast. This whole place was great to see. I'd really love seeing some more exploring in Japan - there's quite a few abandoned places in some areas there, especially after the economic boom in the 80's and its subsequent decline in the 90's.
Japanese watching this will be forever proud of a westerner putting the pool stick back where it should be

that juxtaposition of the rooms that were almost like a perfect time capsule of what the hotel looked like versus the ones ravaged by time and natural disaster was almost heartbreaking? I'm not sure if anyone else felt that way but it was deeply saddening. Also really eerie and dystopian in a nostalgic kind of way.

I would guess side which is more decayed is where typhoons hit the hardest, since they come from same direction every year. After years and years with water etc it has done the damage, other side avoids it all.
Yeah, I was thinking those rooms must be more seaside. Saltwater and the full brunt of the wind will decay just about anything.
A lot of air con units visible at 23:00, even if the windows had stayed in place it wouldn't take long for a building to decay. Buildings rely on a fairly constant internal environment. Without it rubber perishes, metal expands/contracts more, before you know it you have leaks and water gets in. After that, the decay is rather rapid.
I wonder if there are any photos of it in its prime?
Good observation. Decay is present in places where there's water intrusion, weather it's coming from open windows or leaking water pipes. In rooms where there's no water intrusion, there's hardly or no decay at all.

Whenever I watch an abandoned place I wonder why the owners left the perfect and usable things there to destroy. They can't take the building, but atleast they can shift lot of things those in good condition.
If a place closes down due to a lack of money, then they probably don't have the funds to move things out.

Wow, I just love that there’s no vandalism in spite of being abandoned, very much the Japanese way. The rooms so destroyed by decay were beautiful in a sad kind of way. The plants growing out of the furniture seemed strangely futuristic in a way. I loved this exploration, thank you!
I was thinking the same thing ...isn't beautiful that there is a small society left that doesn't just vandalise and destroy things for no reason but to be destructive and destroy things .... I can never understand what drives humans to be so horrible ....this is like a time capsule...being destroyed naturally by nature

Those decayed rooms give a very strong Portal 2 vibe... from the beginning of the game, throughout the entire facility. It's actually amazing.

If Americans can ship all their plastics to China for recycling (or we used to) then it's possible to ship other materials to other parts of the world for scrapping, reclamation, or recycling.

Not just by people. My grandma's house was completely trashed by raccoons since she went to the nursing home. A gang of teenaged thugs would have done less damage. At least they didn't have spray paint...
Being isolated on an island probably helped. If I wanted to plunder the hotel for scrap metal, how would I carry it all away?
The food left in the fridges and bedding on the tatami mats instead of neatly put away were either workmen or staff who stayed in the hotel's very last days to close it up.

So Good to see a place that hasn't been trashed. Any abandoned place in the USA is instantly destroyed by vandals. All glass must be broken, spray paint everywhere, wiring all stripped from walls...etc. It is amazing to see what was intact in this place!
And yes, I've done a fair amount of urban x and you should most def wear a good respirator in a place like this. Hanta virus and other nasty no cure stuff loves places like that....

8:15 Caramel Dansen speedycake remix CD. Caramel Dansen wasn't a thing until about 2008 or so, so that was left by someone after the hotel shut down.
i recognized it as well when i saw it, it was released in 2001 so maybe it was there already before it shut down. crazy though since its a Swedish nightcore remix and nothing Japanese. its probably also the first nightcore remix ever.
You got it right. The Japanese remix release (that exact CD) didn't exist until 2008. A company named Quake Inc. (Japan) gained the rights and published that disc. Quake became Pony Canyon, and then Exit Tunes, btw.
It might have been an asset liqudation crew that left that CD behind.

I honestly thought that was Love Live at first.
Had this hotel been in the US, the vultures would have stolen what they could carry and the idiots would have smashed the rest of it before you could say “morons”.
Instead we can now get a glimpse of this hotels history through both the building itself and through what is left inside, and we can imagine how it must have been in its glory days.
By the way, if I ever could afford and have room for a (grand) piano, it would be a Yamaha - the sound from the pianos they found had an amazing sound considering they have been left unattended for years.

just found this video and every time I watch these kinds of urban exploring I can't stop thinking about what it may feel if the resort is still running. Also, it fascinates me how we may somehow just view it as history but people did actually went in there. Like, imagine the memories it held from the time it started, it's just so fascinating.

You can get really sick from breathing in all of that mold. One of my friends got a respiratory condition just from a small amount of mold in a house she was renting..

@@Ronin.Samurai it's the byproducts of the breakdown of the mold by your body. Yes, mold spores create toxic byproducts when your body break them down. Break down a lot of mold all at once and your system gets hit with a big dose which can make you seriously ill. Especially if it's "bad" mold like black mold which is often found in damp old buildings and places with lots of decay.

You should invest in a 360° camera, and record an exploration video with one so people like me can watch it in VR. That would be the best thing ever.

There is nothing wrong about taming what is inside a abonded building, take all the dishes if you know a use for them.
Proper etiquette for UrbEx is to not take anything from the sites so that you can preserve the site. It's also so future explorers can have the same experience while checking out the buildings. They've talked before about it being disrespectful to take things from these places. "If everyone decided to take something, there will eventually be nothing left."
I think that destroying stuff for no reason or taking something just to take it apart and sell it's raw materials is bad. But if you see something and you know a good use for it, better than just sitting in an abandoned complex, why wouldn't you take it? Just because of some urbexers in the future? Knowing that everything will be destroyed without mercy if they find a new use for the land in the future?
I would NEVER take anything from there. That is in Japan NOT in the U.S, what I'm trying to say is places like that in Asia us is a tradition "you will have a bad omen following you" and you will get sick until death. This is the truth. You can Google it. DO NOT take anything from places that is abandoned ever from Asia.
Brilliant video and an absolutely fascinating place. So nice to see places from a place with a culture that isn't just to smash everything up. Like the respect you show for all the places you visit. The contrast at 17:40 is crazy.
best is that someone put down his beer and didn't even know that that beer will never be moved again. Like you said, everything is intact. In South Africa people will start vandalizing buildings a week or two after it has closed down.

I loved this explore, best one in a while. It was amazing seeing one mint condition room and just down the hall you will see a room overrun by mold and decay. It's definitely rare to find a place so untouched too, wow!
The dramatic music makes it 200% more interresting for me ❤
I think this exploration video is one of my favourites now because you get a great before and after of the rooms. It's a great shame its abandoned as the place does look beautiful.

You guys need some small foldable respirators for the mold!
I don't know why, but they never seem to consider such suggestions. Going without strong, solid footwear and some protective gloves would seem to be defy basic common sense, since one puncture of s shoe sole, or one cut on a hand from unseen bit of wire or metal, can have serious effects.
A small foldable respirator? They do come in small medium and large but they are in no way shape or form foldable. A true respirator... Not just some phony mask that just covers your face with a couple little holes in it. I'm talking a genuine respirator that Automotive and interior and exterior painters would use.

A modern gasmask would however be a lot better.
