    First time viewer here. Subscribed today. I finished one of Paul Elkins wooden boats last year minus a few details. Love your innovation. Going to go back through your videos and get caught up. I have built a couple of aircraft so I know your passion. Great job. What part of the country are you located? Alan from Indiana

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aircraft!? That's amazing. So cool. This is going to be one heck of a journey Alan, driving out to see Paul Elkins. It's become this years mission. hehe My initial thought was to build something just like his, but this it turned into something bigger and more complex rather quickly. hehe Happy to have you on board Alan. I'm from NJ and will be driving up tnear Indiana last week in July. Maybe I'll get to see you.

      Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else is searching for boats plans wood try Joolaim Rudder Replication (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my neighbor got amazing success with it.

    This design and build appear to be way easier than any of the builds I have seen so far. Wanting to get at a boat soon. Just made extra room in my barn for a build.

      This style of boat is based on some very very simple designs. I made it complicated and more in depth. I am simply having fun while building this thing. For me, thats what it is all about :)

    Hi Andrew, thin card / thick craft paper or similar make excellent templates, so much easier to bend cut and shape to the desired size and then lay flat onto the plywood for marking the exact shape. Love the videos, great !

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rob S Thank you yes. Love the card, though for me using vellum is perfect for the next stages for making my full size plans for this model boat. Roll them up and slide them into a protecting cardboard tube. I think I'm going to be making boats for some time to come :) Love this hobby.

    is it next week yet? ... great job Andrew! Lookin like a great boat now!
    Next time you need to bend wood, or plywood, use boiling water. soak both sides for an hour or so. then put in place and clamp as you bend. works pretty good. Keep the water HOT.....

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Jim… :-) I think I Sola and your video the other night. I think I will do that the next time I bend plywood. I actually had one side crack a little bit, but not too much. It was good to see though, how much I could bend the wood. I am in Washington DC for the next couple of days receiving an awardin education. Making it a little tough to make the edits in time for a Thursday morning release. But I will see what I can do of course.

    I will have to try Gorilla glue on my next boat! I have always used West system epoxy.

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bill Read I love the #GorillaGlue though understand it is not for all joints. What is saving me, is the bondo, resin and fiberglass Ill ultimately be covering this build with. To be honest, my next build will be using an epoxy glue to see how that is different, compared to the gorilla glue. There are many purists out there that have told me off, but I'm a rebel ;) So far, my boat is the boat that #homedepot built ;)

  • @newdogatplay
    @newdogatplay 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i wander. if u used hot steaming water if it wouldn't help soften the woods fiber so u could bend ur curves a bit easier i know it works on actual wood like walking sticks and such also could use a heating gun to bend and dry at same time ,just a tip i hope it helps

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely Charles, I am sure it would make bending the wood over the frames much much easier. I will probably try this the next time I perform the same task on my next boat. It was good to test the flexibility of the plywood panels.

  • @brian19644
    @brian19644 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mr Andrew. I see you using a wood filler sometimes is that the Bondo or something else. My boat got damaged and to repair now before fiberglassing.

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +brian mckinney I used wood filler on the cabinet. But nothing yet on the boat except gorilla glue I believe. If you send me a photo of where the damage is, I will do my best to suggest something that works. Though I would probably use some epoxy like plastic filler. Something with strength…

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry Brian, I had a brain fart 💨 yes! I used bondo on the frames. To help bring them out to the level I wanted. I would not use bondo for everything, but I totally forgot about that. Ha!

  • @seanashcroft9713

    Why didn't you use steam, or Boiling water for bending & shaping?

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted to see would it bend naturally without it. As I would have to make a steaming bag etc. I didn't want the hassle. Though I did wet one side down, which worked great too.Thankfully, the sheets handled the bend (only just)

  • @leeg3898
    @leeg3898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    wow, that shape is really coming together now, have you sealed it with something in the last few shots, the grain looks great....i thought originally that the wood was going to stay on the outside and the fibreglass on the inside, but thats not the case is it? #GorillaGlue #homedepot #gottabedonetohelpamateoutwink

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lee groves Thank you Lee ;) Love the commitment friend. I'm not sure if the wood will be able to be sanded clean, to be honest. It has a few dings on it now. But regardless, fiberglass will go over the outside, but will be transparent and the wood or painted wood will show through.

    • @leeg3898
      @leeg3898 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah i see, didn't think about it could be transparent, the dings can be forgiven on your first one mate, i can see that although you had the design worked out, creating it from wood is something else, i think watching you work out what to do when a problem comes up is a big part of what makes it unmissable each week, look at them

    what are you painting the boat with? enamel paint? I covered the outside of my kids boat with fglass resin. the transom bottom got some fiberglass just to toughen it up a little. Now I want to paint it. Do you know if you can paint over the resin, and then fiberglass over both? I'd hate to have to sand it all back off.... 😥
    The inside , I was just going to paint, but not sure which type paint would be best.

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, for myself it is simply one step at a time. I know I will be filling cracks and openings with fillet, an epoxy slurry with sawdust or fiberglass strands. Then I will cover with a gelcoat on top of fiberglass, sand down then paint with the appropriate paint. Probably some sort of enamel or waterproof boat paint though I have yet to source.

      +firemanjim324 I responded in another message some place I'm sure, but I will fillet fill the gaps, then fiberglass and paint my boat. Not sure what sort of paint, till I get to that part of the build. (I try not to get too far ahead, or ill psych myself out) ;)

    Man u got a lot to learn about this craft. Then you need to look into what a boat really look like.. I am really confused as to what it is you are trying to accomplish with this obscure design, you obviously have no clue what displacement means.

    • @artisticbrit
      @artisticbrit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you sir obviously have no clue about the myriads of incredible small crafts that have already been built and are all over youtube. As for displacement, my boat is both wider, longer and deeper than many of the smaller craft successfully built and used with love. I'm not worried about the neigh sayers. They are a dime a dozen. This is my boat, built with passion, which is inspiring hundreds of other boat makers to do something fun with their time. So bash all you want, but I suggest you do something better with your time, than try to come down on someone that is unshakeable. Hilarious.

      15 segments to get to this point is a bit tedious. Obviously this is an adventure in boat-building by a relative newcomer in the field. An enthusiast that is eager to share his craft and inspire others, and not necessarily an instructional video in marine architecture.
