Plantation O.F.T.D. is one of my favorite spirits for sipping neat across the board. I mostly buy whiskey, but O.F.T.D. is probably the liquor bottle I have re-purchased the most.
Kinda cool to see someone appreciate white rum neat i did a video on meyerss platinum white rum neat and it was simple but simply good
I go with flor de Cana 12 or 18 for sipping neat. It does have a subtle whiskey note to it for those who prefer whiskey.
Well done for doing this Steve. I was only thinking about this the other day. My partner loves a wee dram in the evening where I’m not a fan of whiskey. I do like my rums especially spiced rum which I normally drink with coke. But just before bed that’s not a good idea! So watching you explain and describe sipping rums has now give me an idea of what I can now drink neat. Thank you
Cheers for watching 🫶
I recently was traveling down to Florida from NY and picked up a bottle of Rhum Barbancourt Special Reserve 8 Year Haitian Rum (sugar cane) for about $25.00 US and wow, what a great sipping rum! For now, it’s replaced, my bourbon, Tequila and Scotch sippers. Even my wife, who is not usually a fan of rum (straight or mixed), loved it AND took my glass hostage for herself. Lookin to see what else is in that ballpark to try, even if a bit pricier.
Great Video, I 100% agree! The entry level aged rums often disappoint compared with their younger or older brothers. Not saying there aren’t any good young, but aged rums, but they are often single casks or other more expensive stuff.
My go to is ED 12 at the moment! I do have a 15 but I reserve it and don’t sip it very often. I’ll get there at some point. But after that OFTD tasting on the live, I was pleasantly surprised with that. I’ve been tasting my other overproofs if I can. Just a fun journey. Thanks for your expertise!
Captain Morgan Private Stock is a great sipping rum
My local off licence in Ireland, Appleton signature is €50…
I order from the uk and it’s shipped from the north, so much cheaper
It's the same in the US, at least at my shops - the Appleton Reserve and the 8 are pretty close in price.
I have depaz Agricole ..only argricole I have got now even though I have had over 60 rums I find that style not easy to jump into I like it but ican only have one or 2 glass at a time ..will be interested when u get round to doing that style
So. Stay tuned. With the Saturday videos I’m steadily working through basic education. Up soon is when I pick out Barbados, then Jammy, Guyana etc etc. then I’m hitting Cane juice before I go Madeira and Haiti etc. Now. When I hit that sugar cane juice video on the Saturday. (Late April I think). Im gonna do a whole week accross all channels (Inc a Live) about Sugar Cane juice Rums. So Mixers, Spiced, Cocktails and neat sippers 👍👍
@@StevetheBarmanUK great
We were drinking Havana Club 15 year old last night it was very smooth but quite expensive, like you say there must be alternatives out there which are more affordable & almost as good.
Thanks for sharing Harry! Hav15 isn't a rum we see much of this way. Mind you, at nearly £150, I understand why...
As a viewer from Pennsylvania, at local shop, I can get Plantation 5 year or Appleton signature both for about $23. Absolute bargain in my opinion. However outside of that, it’s really hard to find great rum in that range. I can get Smith and Cross for about $32 which is great, and some pretty cool Cacacha for similar, but sadly great sipping rum at least in my area is limited to high price ranges, outside of what I mention. Love the channel though, looking forward to the day I can get my hands on some Havana Club
Thanks Jonny. Soz for the delay in reading 👍👍
I’ve had difficulties with the lower rums from foursquare like doorlys and rl seales because of the strong acetone notes but everyone seems to love them. Is there something I’m doing wrong? Should I be letting them rest in the glass for longer or something?
Don’t worry. You’re not alone. If you dive into more of my videos, you’ll know I have the same opinion. I just don’t get on with the vast majority of Foursquare Rums. Give me St Lucia rums every day of the week. BUT. There’s also many people who love Foursquare too.
Appreciate the response man you’re awesome. I’ll look into st Lucia rums, thank you
Hello Steve! I wonder how come, you came up to rum? Why not a scotch or irish or burbon, gin cognac? As to me , having been mostly a scotch , irish and burbon "neat drinker" over 35 years (I'm 62 now) I'm just sick and tired of all whiskies (of course not for good) and decided to broaden my horizons of drinks of spirit and enrich my palate with some other spirits such as firstly rum, tequila, gin, mezcal, cognac., and i'm feelin' good because of that👍🙂 And what about you?
I actually started with Cognac. BUT i have VERY expensive Cognac tastes. Like anything under £75/£80 a bottle is merely Meh. So its tough. But I've been known to have a few £200+ bottles of Cognac/Armagnac... and actually "Brandy". There are some belting French Brandies made outside of Cognac. My 2 favourites, although they're made in Cognac, can't actually legally be called Cognac!!
As far as Whisk(e)y goes... meh. Hate the stuff. But I don't like Beer either, so I put that down to Grain in general. Which translates to Vodka/Gin. The spirit that is intriguing me a little is Tequila... but I have a long way to go with that, and I think I prefer Cane Juice Rums over Tequila. Like Paranubes Mexican Rum is fantastic! But on the whole, it can be summed up like this... i don't really like heavily aged Spirits. "New Make" can actually be okay...so Whiskey under 3yo. but Nothing comes even close to Brandy or Rum.
Thanks Stevy for having made your point👌I got it. We have much in common as to beer) I personally can't stand it, its like old toilety-ish whiff .Thanks for "navigation" as to Paranubes Mexican Rum ☝ I'm gonna go lookin' for it👍 @@StevetheBarmanUK
Good video, but you need to get closer to the bottles.
I can't get much closer...they're right there in front of me!
No I mean zoom in so we can see the labels better
