I don’t often comment on videos, but this one was particularly helpful. I just ordered a carbon fiber steering wheel from Overtakeauto for my 2004 C5 Corvette. Following the steps in this video made for an easy project and I was done in just over an hour start to finish. I did NOT need to use WD-40 on the splines as the wheel came right off with the puller I rented from O’Reillys. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make and post this video!
Bro pro tip...Just use a cigar flame lighter or a lighter torch. When I replace these I just heat it for maybe 30 seconds the metal expands and then cools and it comes off easily. Great video.
Great tutorial on the issues with the C5 steering wheels. Mine didnt want to budge at all and I wound up taking it to my body shop guy. He had it for another couple days before he was able to make it break loose. He wound up drilling and tapping the wheel to use bolts and not the J-hooks. Mine was a nightmare. Glad you were able to get yours by yourself. I've never in all my years of wrenching had one this bad. 😎👍
Thanks a bunch dude, pulled it off with no trouble thanks to your diy. Definitely suggest drenching the bolt with wd40. When it came loose I found wd40 in the threads so assuming it played a good part 🤷🏼♂️
did everything you did and mine would not come off, the steering wheel removal tool stripped its threads from tightening it so much. saw a comment about using a cigar torch lighter, might try that
Dang thats a bummer! Sorry to hear it’s so stuck. Heat is a good option for getting things to unbind, just be careful you don’t melt any of the surrounding plastic parts (clock spring). Also, did you let the penetrating oil sit and soak for at least like 12 hours?
Thanks for the video! Does the glass roof panel come out of your vehicle? I would add the recommendation to remove it if possible during the seat installation if possible. Thanks again🤟🏽

lol really? I never saw any residue that looked like old loctite on the splines. Why on earth would they put loctite on the splines? I understand the steering shaft threads, but splines aren’t meant or needed to have loctite. Unless that was meant to fill the gap of any tolerance slop between the male and female portion of the splines.

I didn’t notice anything different from before I removed it. Do the two bolts need a little extra tightening? Actually, did you replace those little rubber nipple things onto your new wheel? I believe those help provide a soft surface for the wheel to mate up against so it’s not metal on metal that will chatter or vibrate.
@@Addimotive hopefully my alignment fix it tomorrow cause I mounted mine before watching your video and now it’s off center but before with the old stock steering wheel it was fine :/ I tried pulling the steering wheel off again but now won’t come out cause the j hooks shaved of some portion of the holes where you pull making not enough contact now
@@lucadimarco2087 hm that’s weird. Yea take a look at your stock wheel you took off. There should be a keyway on the internal splines that allows the wheel to only go on the shaft in one position. Unless there were variations in shaft/wheel hub design over the years. My car is a 2001.
So if you're just tossing the steering wheel out, you bust out a cutting wheel and just cut open the sections you need to access those bolts pretty easily. 10 minutes instead of an hour!
Yes I guess that’s one way to go about it. Except it’s a lot messier and that’s a lot of vibration you’re sending through the column and interfacing components if you use a sawzall.
