Flight Review - Garuda Airlines from Jakarta to Bali Denpasar - and back again! Economy class...

- I flew to Jakarta on SriLankan on what may be the best Tier Point run in the world... Which gave me the choice - stay in Jakarta, fly straight back to Abu Dhabi (although you can't fly straight on a back to back as Jakarta airport is too large) or to head on somewhere else... I wanted to spend a couple of nights in Jakarta but was keen to move on and Bali was the obvious choice...
When I looked closer, I found a quite astonishing 9 airlines that fly between those two cities and I plumped for Garuda - always fun to fly a nation's flag carrier out of their capital city. They are also the only airline servicing that route to be a member of a global alliance.
Indonesia's airlines have a poor reputation, which I address in the video, but I'm pleased to report that this was a great experience!

Hilarious experience about the sky priority/status recognition. I'm impressed they gave it an honest effort, particularly that early in the morning at DPS
They were a bit grumpy in DPS but tried hard nevertheless!
Thanks for the info + video!
Thanks Jimmy
the flights you do for us to watch thanks matt
It's a public service!!
A nice couple of flights, unexpected food is always a bonus :)
Few things better than unexpected food!
GA today looks good, Matt. My only GA flights were in the mid-1970s when this airline operated DC-9/30s on regional routes. So my two GA flights were SIN-DPS-JKT. Your experience of GA in 2023 was far superior !
I think you're showing your age a bit by revealing this!
@@MattsPlanet HaHa. I did a fair amount of travelling when I was young. Worked in the travel trade so could take advantage of agency discounted tickets.
Nice review on the Garuda 737, I did fly on their Boeing 777 between London Gatwick and Amsterdam Schiphol when the airline offered that 5th Freedom service from 2013-2016.
Those widebody fifth freedom flights can be great fun!
Love the sneaky dig at Noel Phillips there Matthew you absolute RASCAL!
Sneaky dig? Never....
Hi Matt. Just a quick reaction to your comment about SIM cards in Indonesia. After seeing some comments on your Patreon WhatsApp conversations, I bought an eSIM for my recent trip to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Qatar. On similar trips before, I'd always bought physical SIM cards locally, but this was a whistle stop trip which would have been too much hassle on arrival in each country.
I have to say that it worked seamlessly - I'm a convert! As soon as I switched my phone on at a new airport, the local data service was picked up straight away. This isn't a plug, but I did get a discount code off your other Patreon member and I have now have my own link. But, do your own research 😇
I agree with you 100%. I saw some people struggling with e-sims when they first came out but they seem to have stabilised significantly since then. I did research them before this trip but it was a short process as I quickly realised that my phone was so old it doesn't support e-sims!!!! It's nearly Christmas...
Flew with Garuda in 1982 from LHR to Melbourne and it was the longest flight ever and I felt that it stopped in just about every country in between, Heathrow->Frankfurt-> Abu Dhabi ( got off and had a pint😀), Singapore-> Jakarta-> Denpasar and finally Melbourne, I suppose being such a long flight I certainly will never forget it.
Wowser - those were the days... I fondly remember London to Larnaca to Dubai to Colombo to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on Air Lanka. Not a chance I'd do it now but it was really cheap when I was a student!
I didn't even bother with my original flight from Glasgow to Heathrow a d ofcourse it all had to be done in reverse on the way home.
I flew Sempati Air from Yogyakarta to Denpasar a while back, I'm convinced the stewardess was holding on to the door opener. She looked petrified.
Happy days.
Those are the experiences that build lasting memories! Not like LHR - AMS on BA!!!
Awesome again! How many videos did you film on that whole trip?
I plan my trips with videos in mind!!! This is the 5th I've released from this trip with another 3 to go... I tend to travel every two months or so but get a minimum of 6 videos out of each trip....
I've been bouncing between the US west coast and Bali for a couple of months, I do look forward to your video on Bali, it is certainly an interesting place. The first couple of long hauls were on SQ via SIN, then we switched to QR. I really wasn't that impressed with SQ, the seat just doesn't work for me (size 13 feet, i'm sure you can guess the issue) but the service was good, the food okay, though only managed to get garlic bread on 2 out of 8 flights. We did do I little side trip to Labuan Bajo to see the Kamodo dragons, we ended up taking Batik which was fine.
Thanks! That's a long flight (couple of flights!!) on QR! A few interesting alternatives to Bali within Indonesia if you're prepared to get off the beaten track
I’ve only flown Garuda once in the mid 90s when visiting my parents who were living in Jakarta then and that was just a short Jakarta to Yogyakarta hop - I flew Canadian Airlines (remember them?) to LA and Malaysia Airlines the rest of the way. My younger brother was living there too and finishing secondary school but flew to see me and his buddies in Canada (we’re actually from the U.K. but I know you get how expats move around, Matt) a couple of times, in which the cheapest involved Garuda as far as LA and Air Canada or Delta for the final leg to Calgary. Anyway, the now defunct Garuda Jakarta - Los Angeles route is the interesting part: it went Jakarta-Denpasar-Biak-Honolulu-Los Angeles. Where’s Biak, you may ask. Well, it was a refuelling stop only and is off the coast of Indonesian Papua. Garuda used to fly it with their 747-200s, DC10s and latterly an MD11. I’ve tried to get my brother to reminisce enthusiastically about that flight or even to recall anything about it but he finds flying a stressful chore and just said, ‘it was long and a pain in the ass’. Philistine!
Wowser - a 747-200 is a blast from the past! That sounds like a fairly gruelling experience... I once flew to Sri Lanka on Air Lanka (I forget the aircraft type - bad AVGeek!!!) and we knew there'd be a stop in Dubai but on boarding they told us we'd also need to stop in Cyprus as we were so heavy... Always suspected that the real reason was that there was a special on aviation fuel in Larnaca that day...
I seem to recall Air Lanka flew L1011s back in the day. @@MattsPlanet
Garuda used to fly direct to CGK from LHR around 2017 on a 777-300ER. On the way back there was a stop in SIN. I did LHR-CGK-DPS-SIN-LHR. On the way out to CGK there were only 65 people on the flight. I had the entire front cabin to myself!
Indeed. At that time the weak CGK runway meant that GA had to restrict long-haul flight operations with its 777-300ERs (for weight reasons).
I think they still make it up to AMS which would be a fun experience....
@@MattsPlanet GA's schedules to Europe are subject to change. Last time I checked it was flying to AMS (but not non-stop). Not sure about now. Even KLM (which naturally serves, for historical reasons, Jakarta consistently has an en route stop in KUL.
The most dangerous trip you'll make is the taxi to the airport.
Agreed! Particularly in Jakarta! And Bali, now you come to mention it!
Alitalia also had a matching scheme and I was approved for Gold (Elite Plus), but the status designation didn't show properly across all the partner airlines' boarding passes i.e. it would show on Delta but not on Korean. Which was a complete disaster as it meant whether or not you're getting Sky Priority treatment and lounge access. It was a disaster then as it is now, apparently. Also agree with the domestic non-lounging phenomenon that is uniquely SkyTeam; despite this though, I plan on retaining my Elite Plus level with my scheme of choice.

The customer service ethic meant the Garuda team worked hard to overcome the issues... It took a while but I think I got the full experience. I printed the ITA membership card and carried it with me as I did anticipate some of this!
Airport and train station WHSmiths still keeping that business afloat.
I wonder if they try to upsell you a large bar of chocolate when you buy a copy of Pick Me Up on the other side of the world. 🤔
It is remarkable how widely they can be found!!! As you saw in the video, I just breezed past and only really noticed when editing the video!
Fun fact : That Soekarno Hatta Airpot ( you call it jakarta Airport) is not located in Jakarta....
Didn't know that but its not unusual... London Luton airport isn't in London! There's an airport close to me called London Ashford airport that's not in London or Ashford! It's actually in Lydd...
Hey Matt not sure if it's just me but the video quality seems kinda low. It feels like I'm watching 480p even though I'm on the 1080p setting
I'll take a look - don't think I've done anything different in making this video....
@@MattsPlanet Hi Matt. We have the same problem with ours. We are watching through TH-cam app on an LG television
Looks like the camera is out of focus for the entire video
A couple of comments like this - I'll see if TH-cam has done anything strange to the file I uploaded...
@@MattsPlanet I don't think so, as the text in the video is sharp, and anything close up is sharp. I think the camera was just out of focus for some reason.
You didn’t miss much from the Garuda Domestic lounge.
I got a decent look round the corner as I was standing there and I think you're right! Would still have been nice to see though....
The Garuda lounge in T3 is horrendous! You missed absolutely nothing. Often no wine (the only booze they have) and disgusting food. For an sledged 5 star airline, it’s bad. I’ve walked in there three times in the last year and quickly walked out.
I got a glimpse and it didn't look brilliant....
