Is it just me or has Sam's battery reporting gotten a bit spammy? All these different metrics of time and materials and company of manufacturing. My eyes are glazing over from the onslaught of random and unrelated percentages, time periods and cost. I appreciate his enthusiasm for battery news but it's currently incomprehensible in the presentation lately. Every day a new metric or a new battery breakthrough that negates the next day by new material. I guess the gist is batteries are getting cheaper and better but maybe back off from some of the data vomit in the daily reports.

@@Markcain268 Sadly Australia no longer makes motor vehicles, when it did there were some great vehicles.
BYD is one of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers. It is based in China.
They have been building passenger cars for about 20 years, but until recently they were mainly known in the west for building buses and trams. I believe a large part of the LA bus fleet is built by BYD at a factory in southern CA.
So far their passenger vehicles (these days mainly EVs) haven't been sent to the Americas.

  • @-whackd

This will be great for people who do home solar. You charge and discharge your batteries every day so LFP helps with thousands more cycles.

    • @hargeaux
      @hargeaux 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Actually with LFP a cycle is the equivalent of 100%-0%-100%.
So charging it every day at home doesn't add any extra cycles to the battery, it's simply tied to your usage.
ie. 100%-50%-100% is half a cycle.

Unfortunately the issue is repairs and warranty not being up to scratch - Insurance companies especially in the UK are ramping up prices due to the fact the services offered by dealers are non existent, third party garages are also not equipped to repair EV's or store EV which have been damaged. So the insurance companies end up writing off cars in most cases where the batteries have been damaged or if there are other issues which would mean the repair is uneconomical where as in a traditional car you could repair it. This is resulting in huge premium hikes across the board, affecting owners with ICE vehicles as well in some cases by 90% - my personal case from 700 to 1400 a year. I had a model S which this happened to (non-fault accident) no structural damage but as the battery had been damaged the car was written off - end result I bought a Porsche Cayenne instead. What we are going to see is the EV bubble pop in it's current form until the infrastructure exists to support things (I wouldn't hold my breath). All I see is the ability to drive becoming an unaffordable luxury for most people in the future - enjoy it while you can.

The cheaper operating cost does not apply when charging on the road instead of at home. Also it is offset by the huge initial capex for the battery if you want a large battery for range. Also the large battery is very heavy, thus you will be creating massive damage to the other vehicle in a crash (possibly another EV creating massive damage reciprocally). I wonder if this may further reduction in price-point lead to a new transport vehicle segment for larger vehicles because larger vehicles mean bigger battery and longer range. May suit people carriers or work trucks or for vehicles that tow. Alternatively, one novel solution for road trips requiring a a longer range battery is for start-ups to engineer battery bank trailers to power the motor which are towed by the vehicle. The battery bank trailer would also have breaks to regenerate electricity when travelling down hill.
Presumably, all passenger buses can be transitioned to electric battery/ motor power using the same economy of scale and could take advantage of in-ground charging via wifi at bus stops and or through having perovskite solar panels on their roof.
The same argument goes for passenger trains.

Despite falling battery prices, here in the uk the cost of any ev you would consider buying is eye wateringly expensive, and I don’t see the price falling to any level of affordability for the average driver any time soon. In fact there will always be an excuse to maintain prices, such as larger kwh packs and increased range. For the average uk motorist the cost of an ev is beyond income levels and even eclipses the prospect of buying a ‘luxury’ badge ICE car. Perhaps the biggest elephant in the room is the fact that batteries will not last as long as a ic engine, rendering the car compromised with the prospect of significant cell replacement cost, for even the car being virtually valueless on the s/h market. All this after spending upwards of £46,000! I think I’ll wait a bit.

Saying that EV prices reached par prices with ICE prices over and over isn't going to make it true.
I have been pricing both ICE and EV cars in the USA for my next car purchase.
    - EV models in my price range are about $10k over comparable ICE models.
    - There are zero (yes, zero) of those overpriced EVs available in stock within 2000 miles of my location.
    - And to add insult to injury, public chargers sell charging so expensive that unless you charge at home you pay more per mile than gasoline.
    - While charging at home is indeed cheaper, it is barely cheaper. Worse, most of the public grid electricity in the US is still dirty, and putting solar panels on your home have tax and insurance implications that often completely wipe the advantages.
So, if you (like me) are looking at your next car purchase purely from a financial perspective the clear choice for now is a high MPG reliable and low cost ICE, with little net effect on the environment because of the dirty power grid.
Things might be different if you are in the $40-100k price range, but that is not me. And I don't see things changing much unless sub-$25k and sub-$20k EVs become readily available for same day purchase in the US.
The same goes for in-home solar panels and batteries. They need to become cheap enough to make sense.

@@SMoore-vj7bt Agreed that we need more charging stations, but they also need to sell electricity so that their price is lower than gasoline or diesel in cost per mile driven.
We also need low-cost EV models (in other nations you can even get them for $10k, with at least 2 seats and A/C while here they start around $30k compared to inexpensive gasoline vehicles starting at $15k).
And EVs need to be easily available and not something you order from a dealer and then have to wait for months or years to receive it. If waiting for delivery is going to be the new normal... we might as well order directly from the manufacturer at MSRP+delivery charge and let the dealers go jump off a bridge. But even then, delivery from manufacturer should happen within 1-2 weeks at most.
If these things don't happen the only ones buying EVs are going to be the green fanatics and those who believe the lies about cheaper cost of operation. Those that buy purely based on financial factors or are strapped for cash are going to continue buying good old ICE cars.

@@nospamallowed4890 who wants to be always tethered? A slave who has been fooled into believing the climate change narrative. Just wait until TPTB increase the price of electricity to 30 cents per kwh and tax home solar panels. First they lure you in like a dumb sheep. Also how do you recharge if you run out of charge in the middle of nowhere? You can not cart a jerrycan back, you will need to call some expensive mobile recharging or tow truck.
Personally I am not buying any vehicle that drives itself and drive (suicide) me into a tree because I disagree with the government. Until all the electronics are open sourced, I am sticking with refurbished 1990s era vehicles or newer ICEs which I have gutted and replaced the drive-by-wire crap. I realize most Americans do not share my paranoia. Anyway, agreed the EVs do not make sense yet, and the human climate change narrative is a lie (anyone who has researched this will come to this conclusion that only the sun cycles are in control). Besides carbon is the life cycle of the planet and makes the planet greener and humanity more prosperous. Global cooling corresponds to epochs of civilization collapse and pestilence. The entire carbon tax crap is about the elites enslaving humanity. How can the Viking get so excited about this?

Lets just hope the price drop isn't matched with the usual hand in hand quality drop. Something has to give when it comes to BOM in manufacturing if prices drop, especially in a high interest economy. It will take several years of real world use (not lab tests) to reveal the true decay curve of these cheaper cells.

Price of ICE is going up in America. UAW is on strike, inflation, and GM, Ford, and Stellantis have been only building cars with the highest margins. This has caused the average price of a vehicle to increase by almost 20% in the last 3 years. With battery prices falling and gas prices raising, this is not hard math for most new car buyers. Buy a Tesla, or get screwed by OPEC and Legacy Auto.

There are still the issues of a completely unprepared and useless charging infrastructure, range, depreciation, degrading battery life (meaning that at some point you're still going to have to replace it) and escalating insurance to name a few...
These things are like mobile phones - virtually obsolete before they hit the shelf, because you just know there's an updated model coming in just six months' time!
